My license plate bulb burned out. The Victory P/N is 4011741. The dealer wants $8.99.

It's a standard bulb and I found a GE brand equivalent (P/N: GE 193) for $0.25.

I just happen to have one in my garage, so it costs me nothing. I bet it can be found at the local autoparts stores too.

The victory wiring diagram says 10 watt, but the stock bulb I removed has "W5W 12V" printed on it. The cheap replacement appears to illuminate the same as stock.

WHAT!!!!!!!!! Please, it is a STANDARD AUTOMOTIVE BUB! Just replaced it and got it at Wal-Mart, forget the price but it was a two pack. Anyone needs a bulb? 6 bucks! Hey, cheaper than the dealer.

Dang, $8.99? Even an LED w5w is not that expensive. I paid $3.59 for an LED bulb just 2 months ago to change out mine and it is even brighter than the standard bulb.

The bulb is a W5W. It is the same bulb used in the top trunk running lights. 12 V 5 watts.. $8.99 should buy you a lifetime supply or a couple LED replacements...

You must remove the license plate bolts, then remove the big M shaped plastic.

I used to be a parts guy at a local H-D shop and you would not believe the people that would come in for taillight bulbs turnsignal bulbs and H-4 bulbs.
They would even drive there cars twenty miles to but what they could buy at the local auto store. $3.98 for one bulb.

While the mount IS awkward (it's not mounted up/down like most, if you've never seen it), you probably don't have to remove the back half of the bike to get to it. I swapped mine for an extension/plug. If I didn't have the trunk, I think I could have got my hand in there OK. With the trunk, it's tricky (especially with that foam rubber neck) but it's doable. I'd say, if you don't have the trunk on, pull the seat, etc and do it that way. If you have the trunk, don't bother.

Maybe the $8.99 for the OEM bulb included labor/installation?

If you only want to do this once, replace it with a 194 white LED bulb. Be sure to get one with as many LED's as possible for maximum brightness and on both the top and sides for good light dispersion. Also, paint the black plastic inside with white or silver paint to reflect more light. Actually, you should do that even if you just use a replacement bulb.
