SongFan,

Many times today I have thought of your fathers name inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial.

It reminds me that some did give all for our freedoms that we enjoy today and more are still working this very day to keep those freedoms secure.

This is a little late, but I want to thank all of those that have served as well as their families.

It's too easy to forget that my ability to sit here and type what I want, think what I want, and ride what I want are all hard-earned freedoms made possible by those who have gone before.

Thank you.

My thoughts seem to always wander back to D.C. and "The Wall" at wh ich I have some "old Friends". Was not aware that your father was on there as well.
My thoughts will always include him and thanks to you for your service as well.

I dont really know much of your history living in England, are the Vets the guys who fought in the Vietnam, Korea, and second world wars?? they dont do much here in England, we have the Afgan heros day, where all the motorcycles ride through Wiltshire, that happens each April over here, but our ex forces men and women are not treated very well once they leave the forces they are basicly left to fend for themselves, and some of them really struggle.

Anyway good job guys

Over here a veteran is a person that has served in a military conflict. There are some sevices available to the veterans thru V.A. (Veterans Administration), such as health care and home loans.

Actually, a veteran is one who has served their country whether in time of war or peace. They all signed up knowing that conflict was a possibility and served their country with honor.

A little over two years ago my then 96 year-old Father-in-law and I spoke on the phone.

To say that the man had an interesting life would be an understatement.

His short story is that he was born a German Jew, son of a patent attorney, who got out of Germany in the nick of time with his older sister. They fled to Great Britain. He was fluent in six languages, with a German accent, and had a working knowledge of a few more. He joined the British Army and served with the Royal Corps of Signals in North Africa and Palestine during WWII.

His duties included carrying messages while riding Norton and Matchless motorcycles across North Africa. He told me that in November of 1943 he was on the side of a road fixing a flat on his Norton outside Cairo. While working on the tire he was passed by the G-Men (FBI) and FDR while they were on their way to the Cairo conference.

After WWII he moved to the US and became a US citizen. He worked on his education and earned two PhD's in History and wrote five books. In his last official job he worked as a professor at American University from 1961 till 2002. He finally retired at the age of 89.

He had many other side jobs over the years. From 1955 to 1960 he held a job in the CIA. There were some other jobs that he never discussed but I have gleaned a little from his office at the house. Awards from the Defense Intelligence Agency for his service and the Army War College are proudly displayed.

On the phone that night two years ago he asked me about my Vision. I told him that it was working fine and still my daily transportation.

He asked "Do you have a US flag on it?" I said no, not at this time but I plan to put one on it. He then said, "It is always beautiful to see the colors fly."

My father-in-law passed away October 18th, 2009. RIP

Nice sentiments Paul.

My dad was a 33 yr old Major when he was KIA.  He was on his third tour in F-4's.  The reason he went back for #3 was because a 3-star general asked him to head up a special ops squadron that he was putting together.  It was called Stormy.  Dad would be the C.O. and he could hand pick every other member.  There were only four aircrews (four pilots/four back-seaters) plus my dad.

He flew a total of 256 missions.  One plaque on our wall said "50,000 miles over North Viet Nam at 5,000 feet or less."  He ended up with 3 Silver Stars, 5 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 21 Air Medals.

My mom did an amazing job of raising three kids as a 31 year old widow.  She didn't blink when I joined the Navy right out of college.

Memorial Day.

I have the same poster at work. It means something to me since I've been an ingredient in one of those cans.

That "can" looks like a hotel next to the C-97s I got packaged in. Wasn't happy then, but looking back it was some of the best of times.
