With this not being a field in which I'm real familiar with, I thought I would throw it out there. The co-pilot and I are planning a fairly long trip in August (4300+-) and would like to capture a bit of it on camera. Anyone have any suggestions for a helmet cam or some type of Bike mounted system that won't cost me my first born...even though it has some appeal at times......that is of fairly good quality??? I know that in this day and age that is a tall order ..quailty+inexpensive.

Thanks
Coop

The one with the monitor would be my next one, I have the first one that I bought three years ago. Here is a take with it.

We're planning a similar trip and have the same question. Do any of you have any experience with these?

The higher the resolution, the more stable your mount has to be.  A high def camera shows every little jitter.  Lower resolution is more forgiving.

If you are mounting the camera on the bike, I'd recommend the handlebars since they have the vibration isolators built in.  If you mount it on the "body" of the bike, you will get more vibration (and the left side has more vibration than the right).  If you are taking a trailer, mount a high def camera on the trailer.  Crawford McKee did that and has some of the coolest footage here: http://vrnetwork.ning.com/video/vision-on-million-dollar-hwy

Whatever you choose, rig it like you will use it on the trip and test it all out ahead of time.  My wife bought me a hi-def camera for a trip I was taking the next day.  I mounted it on the left side and chased VisionTex down Arkansas Hwy 7 all day and got some unbelievable shots that I couldn't wait to see the playback on.  When I went to play the stuff back during a lunch break, it was basically unwatchable because of the excess vibration.  We were totally bummed.  That was when I got good at holding the camera in my left hand while riding twisties with just my throttle hand.  Definitely not the way to go, but I had to do what I had to do.

Bottom line, you can get some nice cameras for under $200.  (Google reviews for the camera you are interested in.)  If you mount it right, you will get better videos than with a $1,000 camera mounted wrong.  Test it out first to make sure it will work like you want on the trip.

I just got the Hero HD camera and the setup and mounting are a breeze. You can set the resolution to one of four different setting and there is even a 60 frame per second mode so that you can end up with slow motion video. It's pricey but from what I have seen it is definitely worth the cost, even if it's a little the boxy looking side. Here is a link to their website:

Our local NBC affiliate used the Hero HD for a number of special clips they aired for the coverage of the Winter Olympics earlier this year. The camera did and awesome job and on TV you couldn't tell it was such a small camera. The videos looked just like the segments filmed on their regular commercial equipment. They even did and segment showing that they were using the Hero HD and how they mounted it for skiing shots, under water, etc. I think it is a very good product.

Hey Trav....thats one awesome camera. Little boxy looking...but nice. I think you would look like something out of the movie Predator wearing it on your helmet. Do you have this mounted on your bike or do you mount it on your helmet?? I watched the promo on the website and if that is any indication of the quality....wow. Plus it is pretty expandable... The RiderCam30F that is also suggested in this thread also is very appealing because of the size and versatility....decisions decisions....Thanks for the input everyone....couple of good choices.

I purchased the Motorsport Hero HD package, it comes with a good assortment of different mounts including a suction cup one as well as ones for flat and curved surfaces. The mounts attach with 3m's VHB double sided tape (the same adhesive used for the Vision lowers) and I put one on the top of my clutch master reservoir and one on the side of one of my extra helmets. I'm using a 32GB class 4 SDHC card so I should be able to record at least a couple of hours of HD video. I'm going to Battle Creek, MI this weekend with a group for the balloon fest and air show and I'll be taking video of the ride and the event with it. I'll post it on youtube when I'm back and a link here so you can all see the quality.

Yet another small HD Camera is the Vholdr. Here's a link to my first video with one mounted on a Ram Mount:

This 2nd (mercifully shorter) video is on the Blue Ridge Pkwy and the HD Vholdr is mounted on the trunk rack, looking back at my buddy.

I bought the ContourHD High Def from Vholdr. I also bought the waterproof case and got some fantastic shots underwater in Mexico a few weeks ago. I love the Camera and the video it takes.

http://vholdr.com/

Now - Mounting it on the Vision is a different animal. I tried mounting it to the dash but WAY to much shaking. I am going to try the Handle bars but wish there was another static place to put it since I really did not want the picture to follow the handle bars. They do provide a Helmet and Goggle Mount with the Vholdr but I have not put it on the helmet to try yet.

I wish I knew of a good Stabalized Mounting post I could get because up in the middle of the dash looking through the windshiled is what I really want.

But the Camera is fantastic!
