It's no secret here that I follow technology. I found the following story on Engadget.com and thought there might be a Motorcycle windshield application in our future:

"It's really too bad nanotechnology is so gosh darn morally unacceptable, it could do so much good for humanity! Take this new wiperless windshield, for instance. Designed by Leonardo Fioravanti of Pininfarina, the Hidra features an aerodynamic design, and a bit of a nanotech sandwich (mmm, sandwich) to keep the front glass clear of water and debris. The first layer protects from sun and repels water, the second layer features "nano-dust" to push dirt to the edges of the windshield and is activated by the third layer which senses the dirt, while the whole kit is powered by the fourth layer which conducts electricity to keep it going. The tech could be ready for mass production within 5 years, but there's already a working prototype in the Hidra concept car."

Here's a link to the story: http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/24/wiperless-windshields-in-your-fu...

The messages that follow include one unique post that describe a home-brew method of repelling water off a windshield. I'm not sure I'll try it as it might make the bike "smelly!" Here it is:

"You know, you can already do this with onion.

1. clean your glass,
2. slice an onion in half,
3. take one half and chop it's surface so the juices start flowing,
4. then use it like a soap bar and coat the entire glass with the onion juice.
5. drive and watch the water beads get rolled off the glass by the wind.
6. wipe your tears off."

If anyone tries this, post your responses. I'm curious if it works.

The onion trick I'm sure is the same as with the potato. However, it works for a time and then you have to do it again before too long. Since I carry liver and onions with me all the time, it shouldn't be a problem. I put them all in an aluminum foil bag, secure to the pipes and usually when i get to where I'm going, waaalaa! fried liver and onions, yum!

Sorry, Sarcasm is not normally one of the services I provided, but somehow I couldn't resist just this once, well, maybe twice, well....

More cool stuff with nanotech...check out Nokia's Morph concept.

Nanotech will become more socially acceptable as more products are introduced that enhance people's materialisitic existance. I doubt the windshield thing, while cool, will ever catch on in mainstream production. A phone like the Morph, however, could certainly be an instant hit. I know I want one!
