so to speak. I've been lurking on this site for about a year, ever since I first became interested in the Vision. I believe you can get to know a lot about a bike by listening to the owners on a forum such as this. I've actually had the pleasure of meeting a couple members (VARYDER and VAPARADOX) at Catlin's..thank you both for taking the time to go into more detail on the Vision.

Anyway, I finally made the plunge yesterday and purchased a 2009 Black Vision Tour Premium from Catlin's. I'm coming off an 800CC Suzuki C-50 Boulevard, so this is just a little bit of a step up. The amazing thing is how easy the bike is to handle and also how smoothly it accelerates. I'm really going to have to watch my speed now, as it feels like I'm going slower than the actual speed. Another issue for me is that I've never ridden a bike with a frame mounted fairing. My mind keeps playing tricks on me with slow speed turns since I'm use to seeing the windscreen turn with the handle bars. A few days of riding will cure that feeling, but it sure feels wierd now. I'm sure I'll be digging into the bike down the road, but for now I just want to ride and enjoy it.

I do have one question...for those of you that ride on Military bases, where did you put the DoD stickers. There doesn't appear to be any good place to put the decals.

Thanks again to all the members here whose honest comments really helped me make the final decision to become a proud Vision owner.

Bill -- didn't I tell you better have your checkbook with you. When I stopped by Catlin's this week I saw the Black Vision was gone and knew it had you as a new proud owner, and you confirmed it. Congrats Dude.

On the DoD sticker, I found that Lone Ranger puts his directly on the front behind the windshield on the dash on the slope down part. If you raise the windshield any, it will cover it. Mine, on the other hand, I've took a plate and mounted up under on the rightside in the curve of the lower part of the gas tank. Again, it is on a plate that bolted to the fairing trim piece. That is really not a good place because when they want to see it they have to step back and bend down. I like Lone Rangers approach since we ride and it is a fact of life, I can live with it. I wouldn't want to see anyother time, so a bump up of the windshield will cover it.

Bill The only place I can see that would be the best is either build a bracket and mouint to the fornt forks or the lowest visiable area on the wind screen. Here at Tinker we have gone past the sticker and just use our ID's. I feel for your perdicament I just got my bike registered and had to put a sticker on just one month before they authorized us to do away aith the stickers.

wooohooo, black is so fast! Congrats and you managed to talk to the extremes of Vision riders. I'm sure there were different ways their thoughts were conveyed.

As for your sticker, I put sticker on the front fork leg on the left side. I put down clear packing tape, then adhered the sticker to it then covered it up with clear packing tape. I figured the packing tape residue would be easier to get off, when needed than the base sticker goo would be. I liked VAryder's approach, but I have a hard time just getting into the facility I work at with a sticker on the upper wind deflector. They can't find it. So, I didn't think the guards would be able to find it in that location. There are holes under the gas tank on the left side you could fabricate a small piece of metal or plastic for that matter and a bolt and WA LA.

Grats!
I wish they would get rid of the stickers for all you folks. I have my state sticker in the glove box of my '60 Ranchero. :P Someday I will get nailed for it.

Welcome. I like to put my stickers on the lower wind deflector. It can easily be seen and doesn't detract from the bike proper. And when your sticker days are over you can always toss the deflector and get a new one. If you don't have the lowers, get them.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'm going to try the Lone Ranger method. I'm not familiar enough with the bike to visualize the exact placement, but will take a look at it when I get home.

Again, thanks for the welcome and I look forward to many enjoyable miles.

Welcome to the family Bill. I was like you a couple years back and have found this site to be both informative and just plain interesting. I have been privileged to have made some great friendships on this site. I know you will too!!

Hey Bill

Sounds like we have a few things in common. At first, I too just lurked on this site for about 2 years before taking the plunge from a 1986 750 Shadow to an 09 Tour Premium, Black. This site is great and I got a lot of outstanding info from people on here.

And I too am in the Military - Canadian Airforce. The short answer to your question about where to put the base sticker is that there is no good place. My base sticker is round, I put it on my left upper wind deflector. If you find a better place please let me know.

Congrats on the purchase, and I know that you will enjoy.

Take Care

Bill,

Congrats on your new Vision. I also lurked on this before I bought mine and the information that was shared really pushed me to getting one. - Now for your question.
I ride mine on a military post at times and here is what I did. I bought a Kuryakyn Inspection Plate #9168 (or 9162) and mounted it on the windshield with a longer bolt that I got from my dealer. I tried to put it on a outside bolt but it wouldn't allow the windshield to retract - so I opted for the next row in and at the top bolt. It doesn't detract when you raise the windshield and also doesn't hit the cowling of the bike when you lower the windshield. In fact it just sits perfectly right above the cowling when you are in the full lowered position.
The reason I went this way was that when I don't want to let the world know I work on base, I can easily take the full plate off and it looks like I've never made any changes, and I didn't want to scrape stickers when I retire. Plus it really makes it easy for the gate guards to see and they can also admire your new bike. I've gotten thumbs up from some of my guards that knew what I rode last year.
But just a different way to adhere mandatory stickers on your vision.
Enjoy your new ride.

Welcome to the club Bill.

I had C-50. That was a great bike, really bulletproof. You're going to love the Vision.
