Reno County, KS | Hey guys,
I didn't want to hijack any other threads so started a new one. Awhile back we discussed having the need for belt dressing on these bikes after proper alignments did not fix the belt squeal. Someone posted some info on some dressing that was supposed to be good quality and endorsed by most mfg?s. I can?t find the thread to save my life. It looks like I might be waiting awhile more for my pulley to come in. I might just go ahead and replace the belt at that point too. Not sure until I get a good look at it. Any recommendations on belt dressing for the near-term would be appreciated. Thanks.

Jack your rear wheel up and try scrub brush cleaning your belt first with some warm soapy water, rinse well, dry with a leaf blower or compressed air. Lightly spray your belt with some Dry Silicone Lubricant . Tom

| Belt dressing is not recommended for "toothed" belts....it is to increase the "tack" of V-belts and flat belts to decrease their slippage which is not an issue with the toothed drive belt.
As Tom stated try cleaning you belt and lubing it with silicone, or try an old mechanics trick to quiet noisy v-belts......rub the belt with a bar of bath soap. |

Reno County, KS | This makes lots more sense now. I happen to have some silicon lube already. Not sure if it's the wet kind or not but will check and order dry type lube if it's not.

Tucson, AZ | I just posted on the discussion board about this, but I put some poly oil lub sold by Harley for use on their front belt gear. Comes in a small tube about three or four dollars. I figure if Harley suggests using it on their gear and belts, it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. Gets rid of the chirp. |

Gettysburg, 2008 Tour Premium | I have posted this once before and from what I can tell it could result in two widley different setttings if done hot or cold. I adjust my belt with the bike dead cold. After warm up if I did not know that I adjusted it with the proper amount of play I would swear it was too tight. As recommended finding the tightest spot to begin the adjustment is also important although mine did not vary much. I use Blue Coral or Meguires Gold to soap down and rinse free the belt. I jack my bike up and allow it to idle in gear while directing a hose to the belt teeth after soaping up and allowing to soak in for a few mins. I do not do this often. I adjust to factory tolerances with a belt tension gauge. |

| This is what Harley uses on their belts, the service manager stated they always apply this when they do tire changes doesn't take much.

| As a former H-D rider I have had some experience with belts. I too would recommend the H-D "Poly-Oil" just remember you rub it on the sides of the belt -not- on the center "teeth" and just a little is needed.

dinwiddie, va | Yeah. I wouldn't use belt dressings. If the tension and alignment is set up properly, there should be no noises. Remember that the tensions in some of the books are not correct. the tensions for visions should be set @ 32mm of deflection, which is about an 1-1/4". It needs to be done with the rear wheel off of the ground and needs to be cold. I tend not to use the alignment marks on the adjusters. They aren't exact. Adjust the belt to it's proper deflection then work on the alignment. You want the belt to just walk off of one side of the pulley and towards the other. It will rarely stay in the middle. but it is always better aligning it that way.
I have had a few visions come from thru shop and replaced final drive systems becaust they were expanding excessively when they were @ operating temps

| My 08 Vision premium had a loud belt squeal, the previous owner said the belt was adjusted at 2800 mi due to a whirring noise. I just adjusted the belt myself and set it to what my manual says, 20mm(0.79" at 10lbs. I found it at about 1 1/2" and the belt always tracked towards the inside of the pulley, wether the wheel was spun forward or backward. I aligned the back wheel so it takes 1-2 backward turns to get to outside edge and about 12 forward turns to get to inside edge of pulley. I took a 40mi ride and the squal is almost gone. I'll set the tension to the upgraded spec, should I also make the belt track in the center, has this part of the procedure been updated also? thanks |

dinwiddie, va | its 32mm on all models except the 2010 8ball vision and ness vision. because they are lower. It is set @ 19mm If your regular vision is lowered you should use the 19mm setting too. |
