I know lots of folks get the gear lite to light up wrong or it bounces but here is my observation. Mine was getting really bad again, reading second when in first and so on, then I changed the oil. Tada instant fix! Works every time.
Now someone said it is a resistance issue with a bolt and I've heard some have replaced a switch and the bolt.... so I have to think that something is just a tad too sensative.
Regardless, no big deal and since the oil change its good as new

It's a grounding issue and was resolved during the 09 production, according to Vic people at the AVR back in august. It should be covered under warranty.

I find mine only does it when the bike is cold. Once it warms up, it goes back to working properly. Must have something to do with the oil thickness at start up. Doesn't really bother me as I have ridden so long without a gear shift indicator on other bikes. Long as neutral indicator works, I'm good to go.

Mine only does it when I am trying to find neutral. Sometimes it says reverse or first. I'll see if oil fixes it on next change. I didn't pay attention at first change. I just learned to trust the neutral light and not the indicator.

My 2008 keeps indicating 2nd gear when it is in first.  I just changed my oil as well and it does the same thing.

I took my primary off at 15k, oil cange time. The bolt is the same as those on the outer primary only 20mm long. I tried a standard head bolt but because of the clutch basket, could'nt get a socket on it. I put a star type lock washer on the original which helped till recently. I also used new Vic oil which I'm not happy with at all. The bike hasent shifted right since. But I was at the dealer and thought, oh well. Never again. 17.5k is comming up and I'll go back to Castrol. See if it helps. They make cap screws in that size with a hex drive head. I think it would provide more shoulder to improve contact with the washer. Now that I know whats in there I'll be better prepared next time. Contact cleaner or WD-40 at the connector helped also.

Careful, sounds like we're right on the edge of another oil thread.

I'm convinced that any oil mentioned on this site is better than Vic oil. I would'nt have believed it if I hadn't experienced it first hand.

Is there something the Dealerships are doing to fix this? I ask because I was going to change my own oil from now on (money), but if there is something dealerships are doing, I might reconsider. I regularly have false gear readings. Does Victory post a bulletin anywhere of items Dealers are to fix, free of charge, to certain models? For instance, I know Honda puts out bulletins for Goldwing problems, but they aren't recalls. Maybe you could call them soft recalls?

Hey teach, I had that gear indicator jumping from 1 to 2 at a light. So I changed my oil and it stopped! Now its working right. But yesterday all the sudden my green (N) light completely stopped working.....

Same thing happens to me on my 2008 Teach. Undocumented feature?
