It is now time for me to replace the brake pads front and back. How much are pads? Any after market pads worth looking into?

Anyone who has done the job before for themselves please let me know about any special tools required, tricks to do the work and if they would do it again.

I really like my dealer and in the end he might do the work for me.....but I really would like to do it myself.

I already do the following: the 2500 mile PM on my Vision and change the oil. I would like to add: Changing the brake pads and disks as needed.......changing plus balancing the tires.

My Vision goes to the dealer every 5000 for the alternate PM but I do the engine oil change myself.

Rid Safe.

Hi Paul

I was hoping you would be posting something about brakes soon. Ours are coming to the end of their life so I will have to change them in October. My wrench said its an easy job if you have a lift which I don't but I may still attempt it. He sais that you just open them up at the bottom and slide them out. I think the pads are about $90.ca or $75.us.

Can't wait to see your Video!

Pages 15.17-15.19 of the service manual have step-by-step instructions for doing the front and rear brake pads. It's pretty simple.

If you don't already have a service manual, check out this link.

RT, front are $25-$30 a set depending upon brand and the rear is the same for the one set you need. I used the EBC pads and like them much more than the Victory OEM's. Total cost was $73 for all three sets at my dealership.
The easiest way to do the front brakes is to loosen the pad retainer bolt on the lower section of the caliper. Next remove the two caliper bolts that hold it to the fork. Once off spread the pads to compress the piston and then slowly remove the pad retainer pin and remove pads. Watch so you don't lose the little rubber Oring on the retainer pin. Clean up the pin and install the new pad spring clip end first, then reverse the removal steps to finish the install.
The back is a little tougher. I simply removed the retainer pin, slid the pads out then using a screw driver, worked the pistons back. I installed the inside pad first followed by the outer. You can see the inside pad from the right side to make sure you have engaged the spring clips.
Once done pump the brakes back up by pumping the pedal and lever.
Total time for front and rear pad replacement was around 40 minutes. I took my time as I hadn't done them before but it is probably a 15-20 minute job. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the toughest, I'd rate this job a 3.

i usually use a flat blade screw driver or some similar small pry bar to press the pistons back in before i remove the old pads. You can just lay the vision over on its tip over protection to do the rear caliper. I changed front and rear at 16,000 miles. The rear could have gone a little further, but since i was doing the front i did all of them. I used the OEM pads since i have no gripe with them but they are a little more expensive. I think it would cost the average customer around $150 for front and rear pads.

And yes i guess you could do the front and back in 15 to 20 minutes depending on how clean you like your brakes upon replacing pads. I usually end up taking a full hour for front and rear since i take alittle more time on making sure the o-ring on the retaining pin is replaced and properly lubed, also the hanger for the caliper is free of grit and debris so it can float freely. Good time to clean around the piston seals with a good contact cleaner and check for any markings or possible scarring that could accelerate seal wear.

I've got to double check mine as my rear was replaced around 30,000 miles and were on the skinny side. I've developed a squeak about 2,000 miles ago and want to make sure all is well from the 45,000 miles service I did. I'm going to look at them today between the honey dews....

I've got 32,000 on my orginals and they are still in good shape. I use engine compression a lot.

Ditto Songfan, 28K and plenty of material left. ( I did replace the fronts way early at about 16K due to uneven wear on one of them )

My back brake pads are the ones I need to replace. When my Oil pressure sensor leaked many moons ago it put a lot of oil and crud on the back brake pads. They just do not not feel right too me.

I replaced the front pads at 16,000 miles. I'm at 34,500 now and could use new tires and brake pads all around. I'll go back with the OEMs. ET

I read this thread and replaced both sets of my front pads with EBC pads in short order. Easy removal and install. EBCs give a much better feel than the OEM pads. The longest part of the replacement was cleaning in the nooks and crannies of the brakes. I will replace my rear pads tonight.

gcarroll70 and all,

I ride in town on allot. My commute is 15 miles round trip and cannot use engine braking as much as I would want.

I let the dealer replace the rear at 14,600 miles when they did the rear tire. The oil leak did them in and they were contaminated and down to metal on metal for a very small portion of the pad but no damage to the disks.

I bought EBC's for the front and replaced them yesterday at 15,300 even though they had many miles left on them. The pads feel much better but the brake lever is not as firm as I would like.

For my next trick I will replace all of the brake fluid with new and that should do the trick. The book says to replace it every 12000 miles or 24 months. Since my Vision was built December 2007, I have exceeded both.

I had to do the job in my garage so I did not have enough light to video tape it. I hope to make a video any way since it is so easy to disassemble and demonstrate.

Ride Safe!

I now have both front and rear pads replaced using the EBC pads. Easy replacement and significantly improved braking. Nice feel, good response, no squeaking or rubbing. Quality product. BTW, you can get the EBCs online or from any Honda dealer in your area.

I agree that the EBC's are very good pads. Today I had the dealer service my Vision (15,000 miles) and with that they replaced the brake fluid. The service manual tells me to replace the brake fluid every 12,000 miles or 2 years whichever comes first.

Wow. What a difference. The brakes are like new! Maybe even better then new.

So....Change your brake fluid if you are riding any 2008 of if you have over 12,000 miles on your Vision since the last change!!!

Ride Safe!
