Hey all,
I've concluded that I have an exhaust leak on my front cylinder. I also have always had the infamous decel popping that goes with it. Anyway, I'm gonna order a set of gaskets from Lloydz and would like some feedback on what to expect. If you have any time saving tips, then that would be great to share. I did see the post about loosening the entire exhaust first so that's a good starter. Also, I would like some opinions as to whether or not I should spring for some new fasteners or just reuse the old ones.
Thanks,
-Will

will, I've not heard of anyone else pulling their complete exhaust, but folks like KevinX, Dwhite or Lloyd might chime in. I pulled my entire exhaust in a shed on a 90+ plus day and in maintenance terms for exhaust it was relatively easy. I posted a 45K in the review section so you might want to check that out.

I started without reading the book, big mistake. Read the book first. Most of it is simple as you need to start with your mufflers, then your crossover. Yes, you do need to take off the oil filter to wiggle the exhaust off. A good shot of liquid wrench will help also. Cover your oil filter area to keep from crude getting in.

I only pulled the right floorboard off, but wish I pulled the right side silver panel also. But even without pulling it, I was able to get the exhaust off. I didn't undo any brake stuff just pulled everything back far enough for some room to wiggle. I loosened all the exhaust nuts, front and rear port, then read just undo the rear ones and break loose from the front pipe before loosening the fronts. At one point I did tighten them down, the fronts, and work the rear for a while. However, with both loose I was able to work the pipe joint enough to finally get them apart. Make sure you undo the connector for the O2 sensor. The rear one may get the tang bent when you wiggle it loose, it is real close. I started to pull those off but didn't want to deal with it if something messed up. Exhausts and me usually don't get along and I'll break something. However, the Vision really did give me very little problem even with 44,500 miles on the bike.

Make sure your header pipe surfaces are clean, mine looked like it had casting flaws and on the front, because it was not flush, even though it was tight, I had rust on the lower side of the pipe on the mate edge. That had to be loose. I used emory cloth to smooth it out good and then I used OEM gaskets, I think all is well, though I might be wrong.

Putting it back together wasn't too bad and I used grease on the joints, I believe that was a Dwhite tip, or joke, I don't know which. But it did help putting them back together and it burned off rather quickly with no smell after a good 10 miles or so. Supposely the residue will create a better seal and it seems to be okay. I would have used new hardware but didn't think of it. It seems okay as well. I also ran the emory cloth around the port holes good, that is aluminum though so don't get too aggressive, I just cleaned it up.

Patience is the best tool to have. I stopped and did other things if I got frustrated and then went back to it after I rethought stuff, and now I know how to pull my exhaust.

I love how this motor sounds now and how well it runs. I'm no longer Vary Poppins or Chitty Chitty Vision.

Thanks. I seem to recall you mentioning a leak in your crossover when you did the 45Kmi. I'll have to revisit that post.

That also was a problem where the clamp bent up the slip slot and tightening only made it worse.

Just my notes as well... I just pulled my exahust as well, about half the nuts and bolts were only finger tight and my bike has less then 500 miles on it. Also use WD40 after beating on the xOver pipe with a hammer trying to separate it from the front header for 30 mins I finally doused it with WD40 and was able to pull it of with my hands. Boy did that piss me off.

Other then that I ended up getting mine off like Varyder with little hassle. You have to pull the rear bags to get to the mounts and take the right floor board off. I had to pull the front right side panel to put the aftermarket exhaust back on.

I like the gaskets from LLoydz - I ordered them and was surprised to find out that they are actually the gaskets Victory used prior to 2003 I think. Polaris part number 5211770. If you do end up pulling your exhaust, I recommend applying a little bit of anti-seize in the exhaust slip joints. Will make removing the exhaust much easier if you swap mufflers down the road. I wouldn't worry about re-using the fasteners.
