Its Now Offical.....I am on the road to Victory!

I just bought my first Vision Gadget......I bought the Garmin 7820 GPS for $245 from amazon. I know that it is discontinued, however, if figured for the price in comparison to what it offers and the fact that it is already user friendly with the vision it will be worth it. Besides the reality is that I don't need anything that is not soldier proof.

Are there any special cables or hookups that I need to get other than what is provided with the ViVi mounting bracket that I will get as part of the bike?

Thanks

Gerry

Now you need an iPod nano. Generation 3 or less. The new Gen 4's won't charge from the Vision's optional cable. I picked up a 8GB Gen3 from a pawn shop for $70 US on Saturday. (my second iPod) It works great. My life has a sound track of a V-Twin and music.

If you're referring to the Vision mounting bracket/cable, there's nothing else you'll need. ONE recommendation is a copy of the service manual. Looking around hard enough on this forum, you might still be able to score an ecopy download. You can also find a couple Victory "splash screens" to upload to your GPS so it will display similar to the OEM Victory GPS when it's started up. Enjoy and welcome to the club. It's almost ridin' season again!

I did not think of the E-Copy of the shop book, however I will try and find it. If anyone should happen to be able to pont me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

What is this "splash screen"? What is it for?

Welcome to the club. We're fortunate here in Texas....it's always riding season! Well except for today when we have an 80% chance of rain and it's 45 degrees.

You might also want to get the Kruzer Caddy drink holder for your bike because you might dehydrate before you want to stop for water. lol.

Congrats! Welcome to the Vision club!

I found a deal on a new 2820 and I love it! I found the install to be easy and VERY clean. However, I was not thrilled that I had a cable hanging over the side of the GPS and down into the well next to the steering column. So, look around the forum and find the thread that explains how to drill the hole and use the grommet that will come with the mount to run your cable and make it more hidden. I still have yet to take mine apart (due to the fact the bike has been in the shop for the last 6 weeks...ugh) but will be doing that soon.

THAT is the ONLY thing I can think of that Victory didn't allow for with the cabling and mounting is the grommet hole.

Good luck!

Would I need an IPOD NANO if the Garmin 7820 has storage space for and can play songs?

There are a couple folks here that play MP3s through their GPS setup, Trixie being one, I believe. The only downside to it is that I don't think you can control it through your radio controls, like you can with an iPod and cable.

True, I do play my mp3's through my Zumo. I haven't seen the iPod intergration in person. You can control the audio output volume through the radio. But selecting songs and all has to be done onscreen on the GPS. I found out (the hard way) that the Zumo wasn't set up to use the 4 gb SDHC cards (although I believe that the last software upday addressed this). I just got my Zumo back from Garmin. Both mine and my hubby's went haywire. Both units started locking up. The mp3's wouldnt read. I haven't had time to reload my SD card. I have both regular SD cards and SDHC cards. I'm going to load both with songs and see how they go. While my Zumo wa off to Gramin, I bought a 4 gb Walkman (in pink, of course) and started using that on the bike, through the regular audio cable. I have it stuck on my dash with Super Velcro ("You might be a redneck if you have a $20,000 bike and you use velcro to attach gadgets!". I rode th other day and had my Zumo in the mount and the Walkman plugged into the audio cable. Sound is good. I like being able to advance song with the touch of a button.

I have an $18.00 MP3 player I hook up to my Vision through the AUX cable. I set the player to random and just enjoy the tunes as they come up.

You can play MP3's with a GPS but you will get 1 channel mono output only. You will have to utilize the AUX plug or buy an iPod if you care to have stereo input. If you do buy an iPod, make sure it is the previous generation or you'll have to buy an adaptor to keep the power supply function working.

What is this "splash screen"? What is it for?

Splash screen:
This is the image that is displayed at start up. If you bought the Garmin branded GPS you'll get a Garmin splash screen at start up. If you bought the Victory branded GPS, you spent an extra $800 for a GPS that's Victory badged with a different screen that displays "Victory" or something to that effect when it is first turned on. By replacing the startup AKA "splash" screen with a different file in the unit, you can change it to whatever you like i.e. your dog, pickup, fishing boat, hot GF/wifey or maybe a Victory logo. All you have to do is make sure that it's the same file type (.bmp I believe) and the same aspect ratio. Conversion from .jpg to .bmp is easy as everyone on a windows machine has a copy of MS paint. You can select "save as..." and drag down the file type to .bmp or .jpg and maybe a couple others. Basically you can poke around inside the memory of the GPS by tethering it to your PC via the included cable. I find it's easier to right click on the unit and select "explore" than it is to goof with the software that came with it. Anway, hope this answered your question. Sorry I did not follow up sooner and left you hangin'.

Hey All

I know that I have said this before, THIS SITE ROCKS!! Thanks so much to all for your ideas and comments. Oh and Trixie...nothing wrong with being a redneck on a $20K bike, I will soon be in  that club as well.....And Proud Of It......Ha Ha!

As for my listening dilema, I think that I will try the Garmin 7828 that I have coming and then if that does not work I will try the MP3 player and aux cable that I already have and should that not be high tech enough I will go to the IPOD......Trial under fire!

Thanks Again All. I'm calling my dealer today for more info in preparation for meeting with him the end of the month, it really sucks being so far away from a victory dealer. I may also make some inquires to some other dealerships, just to check things out........never hurts to shop around!!!

 Take Care All

Gerry

Like I said in the earlier post. "I picked up a 8GB Gen3 iPod nano from a pawn shop for $70 US on Saturday. (my second iPod) It works great. "

You can get a 1 GB, 2GB and 4GB models even cheaper Generation 1 to Generation 3 iPod nano's at pawn shops in your area then the 8GB I bought.

If you use an iPod with the iPod cable you can do the following from the control cubes:
Switch from the radio sources (AM FM and Weather Band) to the iPod. (This is the same if you have a non iPod mp3 player)
Pause the iPod
Go to the next track on the list
Go to the previous track on the list
Skip forward the next 10 songs on the list
Skip backward to the past songs on the list
Change the volume up and down (Of course you can do this with any mp3 player)

Radio buttons change playlists:
Radio button 1 plays every song on the iPod
Radio buttons 2 - 12 plays the first eleven playlists on the iPod (listed alphabetically)

I have two playlists for the wife the rest are mine.

I named my playlists like
02 New
03 Most Played
04 Four Star
05 Five Star
06 Rush - Smash Mouth
07 Rock
08 Road
09 New
10 Theme
11 Smooth
12 Country

Any other playlist's do not map to the 12 radio buttons.

After 6 months I can choose play lists and radio stations without looking on the fly with gloves on.

My life has a sound track that includes a V-Twin engine and music of my choice if I want music at all.

Ride Safe!

Just one more little note that I have to add to the iPod and cable vs. mp3 player and AUX: the iPod is set it and forget it. When you turn the bike off it shuts off; when you power bike up the iPod comes on. With my regular mp3 player I would have to fumble around in the glove box whenever I wanted to turn it on or off. Not really a huge problem, but it was a noticeable convenience when I switched to the iPod.
