Peru, IN | Before I panic and call the dealer (who will probably want my bike for the rest of the ever dwindling riding season), I figure I better ask someone else first. As I was pre inspecting my bike the other day, I noticed quite a bit of oily soot on the clutch cam and cable from the cam to the slave cylinder. I wiped most of it off and went for a 30 mile ride. All I can think of is an exhaust leak but I don't know why that would be oily, just sooty.
Any suggestions? |

| There was just another guy with problem and I believe he found his cam bolt not being tight.
Go to your dealer and have them torque it and if it keep up have them replace the gasket too. |

Peru, IN | Thanks for the reply. I'll call the dealer in the morning. Which bolt is the cam bolt? While I'm waiting to get in to the dealer, maybe I can check it myself just to make sure it's not about to fall out. I'd like to continue riding in the mean time. |

Conneaut, OH | Might just be me but I don't see any way possible for anything leaking from the cam adjuster to get on the clutch arm |

Peru, IN | I'm still thinking an exhaust leak which isn't the end of the world but still should be fixed. Maybe just a bolt that needs tightened. I'll find out in the morning. |

Peru, IN | I've never thought it had gobs of power although it's certainly more than my Nomad. Probably not that as I still have less than 2000 miles. Still can't figure where soot would come from. |

Central Maryland | Is this soot or road grime? Also, the crankcase vent hose runs in near proximity to the clutch arm; I would highly doubt that the hose was split and crankcase gases are collecting as soot in that area; but it's worth checking.

Peru, IN | Could be but it has the color/consistancy of soot. Still waiting on the damn dryer to finish my clothes so I can go. I'll stop by the dealer to see what they say then off for a long ride ON THE LAST DAY OF NOVEMBER IN INDIANA. (Sorry...thought that was worth caps. Never would have dreamed of that on my Nomad.) |

Central Maryland | That crankcase vent hose does snake towards; and then under the body panel at the bottom rear of the seat. The other end of the crankcase vent hose is supposed to be attached to the top frame that houses the ducting into the throttle bodies. I bet that hose may not be connected there, and your blowing crankcase fumes under that body panel; and it's now appearing on the clutch arm. Easy to check, but you will have to remove the lower saddlebag trim to pull that panel off and inspect the situation with the crankcase hose.
That the only plausible possibility that I can think of for "soot" to be appearing in that area on the clutch arm....

Peru, IN | I'll look in the service manual tonight and see what all's involved in that. I might do it. The mechanic (and I use that term very loosely) said they didn't see anything leaking. On the other hand, my drive belt was "a bit loose" (by about 1.5" worth of tension) and they said "they probably should have checked that at my initial 500 mile service". Not really sure what else the "should have checked" and didn't. Probably one of the reasons why they have the windows to the shop blocked off. |
