Last Tuesday I woke up early and asked Sandy if she would want to take off for a night. I had been interested in checking out a little town at the southern end of Lake Keuka (pronounced Kee-you-ka as I'm told). I found a motel right on the water and there were numerous places to eat that turned up on a search. 214 miles door to door. I was also interested in the Curtiss museum and as luck would have it it was a few miles from Hammondsport and right on the way.

When we arrived only a few turns brought us to the Hotel. The Keuka lakeside inn has recently changed hands and I met Don and in short order we checked in and unpacked. Hammondsport is a small town, pop. 768, and we were about to discover how relaxing and laid back and peaceful a small town can really be. We changed into our suits and walked to the swim area. There were two life guards on duty. The swim area was a lot like using a pool with a concrete pier that kids were jumping off and two stairs to ease your way in the the cool water. The water in the lake was clear and refreshing and there were benches right off the water for your towels and stuff. The lake gets deep quick. After swimming we both just sat awhile and watched the kids play and as time went buy a few older couples came and cooled off and left.
After showering we went into town and ate dinner and learned Budget Traveler has rated Hammondsport one of the top ten Coolest Small towns of 2012. We stopped at the grocery to pick up some fruit and called it a night after sitting awhile lakeside. Something had been strangely disconcerting about Hammandsport that I figured out sitting by the lake. It was quiet. I mean really quiet. A total lack of background din quiet.
The Ice cream shop in town has a good breakfast and opens a 7:30.

The Glen Curtiss museum deserves more than the two hours we gave it.

Sandy and I both agree we will be back.

Sounds like you had a great time. You're right about the Glenn Curtiss Museum. We were just up there the week of the 9th. What a "Gem", as AAA would call it.
