Just came back from 3000 mile/10 day ride. Have noticed on occasion at higher RPMs, I hear what sounds like a timing chain noise, almost as if the lifters are 'floating' or a chain is loose and rattling. I know that's not a particularly technical explanation but I am perplexed. Is there a chain in the upper end? Have looked at the threads on valve clatter and engine noise but a still confused as to what could be causing the noise. I happens only occasionally and then will stop. Any recommendations or help would be appreciated.

Not saying this is the cause. But when was your oil changed last?

Thanks for the reply. Just changed the oil before I left. Castrol 20-50 V Twin Synthetic.

These motors are quite noisy as it is I would say its probably normal. Mine has sounded like that from day one. It got a lot better with synthetic oil (used valvoline 20-50) but its still a little noisy at certain higher RPMs. Have the dealer listen to it but more than likely it's normal.

I've heard a few go down the road and while accelerating it just sounds unnatural if you still have stock exhaust it's even louder. Almost like a light rod knock. Noisy buggers but 6100 on the clock and running good so I let it be.

'08 with about 24000 miles on it. Checked the oil mid ride and it was normal. Guess I will just live with it and not worry about it. Thanks.

I put 35,000 on my first '08. I got it new and beat the snot out of it after 500 miles. It never had much engine noise. My current '08 has 45,000 miles on it. I got it with 18,000 and it has always been a much noisier, both engine and trans. Mobil 1 in both.

is this the sound? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnc28vi9hTA&feature=plcp
That was my 08 vision in the video. It turned out the sound was the stator. I have no idea how but they pulled the engine apart to find the problem and could not find anything wrong. the stator went and after changing it the sound was not there any more.
