Speakers are key,but if you don't have a clean head unit with clean power and signals going the speakers its kinda a waste. No one I know can tell me.. Thanks guys.. |

It's an old Pyle 4x75, nothing special but it works. I don't have any problem hearing music until 100mph or so. A little distortion between 85 and 100. And I really shouldn't be listening to music then anyway lol. |

I just checked a set from my '10 and '11 and they were both 3.5-3.6 ohms so 4 ohm replacement would be correct I would think.

I just ordered a pair of Kuryakyn 5.25" Kicker 2-ohm Speakers 875 for Harley, which appear to be identical to the PS5250's from Victory... for a lot less $$ Only $125 from an Ebay store...

| Does anybody know what the effect is of running 2 ohm speakers in place of the original 4 ohm speakers? Does the reduced resistance cause any technical issues and what effect does it have on the sound? I did a google search and many of the returns mention degraded sound quality and a possibility of damage to the amplifier when running 2 ohm speakers with an amplifier rated for 4 ohm speakers. In my case, I wear earplugs and run the radio at full volume on the highway so I'm wondering if max output coupled with lower speaker resistance is liable to break something over time.

| I measured two sets from my old '10 and the current '11 and unless I'm doing something wrong the resistance between their leads was consistently 3.5 - 3.6 ohms on a high quality meter. Kicker also specs all Victory OE heads at 4 ohms. Where did the 2 ohm spec come from? Interesting.

PS5250 coaxial speakers are now available in 4-Ohm resistance to be compatible with 1998-2005 Harley-Davidson? and all Victory? OEM head units. They also come in 2-Ohm resistance to be compatible with 2006-and-later Harley-Davidson OEM head units, or conventional amplifiers that are 2-Ohm stable per channel.

Posts: 3006 San Antonio, TX | Impedance vs. Resistance
If I take a any Volt-Ohm meter and measure a long thin wire on the resistance scale. I get a reading of the DC (Direct Current) Resistance of the wire.
Speakers do not do Direct Current.
Speakers convert an Alternating Current into sound. Measuring the Impedance of a speaker takes a very different piece of test equipment. This equipment generates an AC test signal and measures the current used by the speaker to calculate the speakers impedance in ohms for that frequency.
A speakers impedance varies based on the frequency of the test signal.
For what I have learned the Vision uses 4 ohm speakers. Using a 2 ohm speaker in a 4 ohm system doubles the current produced by the stock radios' amplifier. This can shorten the life of the final transistors of the stock amp and cause them to overheat. Some systems can protect them selves from failure....other cannot.

| I just talked to Kicker tech support. He said that the 4 ohm version of the PS5250's are new this year. All previous models were 2 ohm... and since Victory has had them as an option for a while, they are probably the 2ohm speakers. The factory speakers should be stamped with their resistance, so I will go home at lunch and see if I can find that mark. I can say that the Victory Kickers up front sound much better than the J&M's I installed in the trunk.... which is why I ordered another set of Kickers... albeit the Kury packaged one's for HD for a lot less money. Both the Kuryakyn Kicker 2ohm and 4ohm are less than $130.
Here's the info on J&M's Victory upgrade speakers. They specifically state that they are 2 ohm !
Product Description Fairing Speaker Upgrade Kit for 2008-2012 Victory Vision/CrossCountry # FSPU-VCTV
Our wide fidelity fairing speaker upgrades for the 2008-2012 Victory? Vision or CrossCountry will allow the volume to be adjusted to maximum at highway speeds, without distortion.
They feature the same exact dimension mounting hole pattern and electrical spade lug size/polarity as the stock speakers, to make installation a snap.
Rated at 2 ohms impedance (2.6 ohms actual) and 140 watts max power, they feature a very thin, hard, injection molded polycarbonate cone, titanium colored dust cover, super flexible rolled edge, high sensitivity voice coil and high flux strength Neodymium magnet structure, to provide for maximum air movement, along with superior response.
You will be impressed by the significant improvement in volume and sound quality while riding your Vision. ((sold in pairs)) This Product Is Compatible With These J&M Product Families:

All four of mine say Rev.02. I also want to re-emphasize that Kicker only recently (in the last few months) came out with the 4ohm version of the PS5250 speakers. All the ones that Victory has been selling in their upgrades are the 2ohm versions that have been out for quite a bit longer.
I believe the following post could explain how 2ohm speakers are used on a 4ohm head unit..

I believe the head unit is 2 channel running one chan. front & one rear and the ouput impedance per channel is 4 ohms. That would kinda confirm that each speaker is 2 ohms with the front two and rear 2 speaker conn. in series (4 ohms) correct? | My '11 speakers also say Rev.02. In my case I'm running without the trunk so I only have one speaker per side. Maybe in that case if the speakers with a trunk are wired in series 4 ohm would be correct with one. I'm still curious why Kicker calls for 4 ohms when they should know since they've been involved with OE. When you spoke with the Kicker tech did he say why they are now calling for 4 ohm speakers?

Yes, for certain model year Harley's.... they don't make these things just for Victory.... and, according to the post I copied above, the channels on the Vision aren't left and right, they are front / back, so with the trunk off, the two front speakers are still on the same channel.... 2ohm + 2ohm = 4 ohm ....

| Hmmm... doesn't sound right. If the two front speakers were on the same channel you wouldn't have stereo which we do. I think you also noted that the front and rear were wired in series. I wonder if that is possible since if they were wired in series and you unplugged the trunk like many of us have, there wouldn't be a circuit and no sound. Kinda like the old Xmas lights where one blew and the whole string went out. Makes more sense that they are wired in parallel so that each one will operate independently from the other. Also, the passenger has a separate volume control and if they were wired in series then lowering one would lower both. Gotta be parallel I think. I'm betting radioteacher and Kicker are correct and the original speakers are 4 ohm. radioteacher stated that checking the resistance across the speaker leads was not a correct way to measure impedance. I know he is right but I also found a couple of sites that say you can half-ass measure them this way to get the minimum impedance which would be 50-75% of the correct number. I don't know anything about radios so can't vouch for it but I did measure 3.5 ohms across the OE speakers which kind of validates what I read.

Marc If the fronts and backs are on separate channels, then unplugging one channel only (ie. the trunk) would have no effect on the other channel, the front. And at the risk of repeating myself, Kicker did NOT make 4 0hm PS5250 speakers until just recently! All the ones Victory sells therefore MUST be the 2ohm version. That is according to their tech department.

| I see your point that if all Kicker had available previously were 2 ohm speakers then that had to be what they were supplying as upgrades to Victory even though the OE speakers were 4 ohm. I've been reading a lot of the previous posts here regarding this issue and what I've taken from it is that using 2 ohm in place of 4 ohm could give more volume but less sound quality with the potential to damage the amp over the long run. Those are of course general observations and not necessarily particular to our bike. In other words, in this case maybe Vic determined that running 2 ohm wasn't going to hurt anything and since that was all that was available they decided to offer them. I installed the 4 ohm Kickers yesterday and I'm going for an extended ride tomorrow so I'll see how they sound on the freeway. The reason I changed the speakers was in an effort to increase the volume. I wear earplugs and have found that the radio sounds much, much better with earplugs than without. Without them the high pitched ambient noise makes it difficult for me to hear the radio. With them I can hear it perfectly but it requires a lot of volume. With the stock speakers full volume is just enough so I was hoping the Kickers would increase the volume enough to give a little margin with plugs in. I'll know for sure tomorrow.

| I just got off the phone with both Radio Sound and Kicker. The tech at Radio Sound confirmed that the OE speakers are 4 ohm which we already knew. He also said it was not a good idea to use 2 ohm and that they could definitely damage the radio. I then called Kicker and he stated that the speakers they supplied to Victory for their accessory program were in fact 4 ohm even though they didn't offer them aftermarket. I asked him about the volume issue and he said that the only way to increase the volume would be to install an amplifier. He said that installing 2 ohm could cause the radio to "shut down" if run at maximum volume. Riders here would certainly disagree with that statement. He said he was going to let the PR people know about the volume issue since they claim the volume is increased on their website.
So, that's the story. I may just reinstall the OE speakers and call it a day.

+1 !! LOL If I knew then what I know now, I would have just opted for the Hawg Wired system, even though it's only two channel and doesn't do squat for the trunk speakers. But, I could relocate my Victory Kickers to the trunk with the Hawg Wired system up front. Would still have to get a separate amp (or pair of mono amps) for the rear.
Actually, I'll probably opt for that new bluetooth dongle, since I already have bluetooth speakers in my Nolan n103 helmet... yeah, that's the ticket !!!!

Posts: 2027 Brighton, TN | Marc and all, having done a little sound system work in a past life as a hobby. So, only going on experiences. I have found that the better speakers normally don't get much louder at all, if ever. What you do wind up with is a speaker that is able to play a broader range of frequencies and sound better doing it. Normally, the ability to get MUCH louder when you stick an amp on them and sound more rock show like. At the price you paid and having used Kicker's before, dropping a small amp on them would get you the results you want, LOUD and CLEAR! What's not too like! You need one more piece and satisfaction all around. Most head units, be it stock or aftermarket will not push enough power for most mid-level speakers to be near their maximum output. Which is why you would amp it up? Comparing the two, Kicker or Hawgwired, the Kicker construction and quality would be hands down better by a long shot.
I am rambling, there are a few more thoughts on the matter. If I had it do at the moment, definitely the Kicker or Polk speakers and AMP them. Loud, LOUder, LOUDER, and sweeet serenity of audio ecstasy. |

Could a $15.00 pr add-on make that much difference? Smarter people than I claim it does. I took a semester of "Physics of Sound" in college (Nashville, home of guitars and a recording studio on every corner) and it appears to me to be smart money.
Too bad that I didn't learn enough in that class to use ear plugs before the hearing loss and the high pitched squealing started; or I might have a reason to spend a couple of hours installing them to find out.

Posts: 669 Peachtree City, GA | Ok - I have been following this one for a bit now and will add in what I have found....
Stock speakers - ok - wanted louder and cleaner... Installed Polk Audio DXi525's and the Alpine 445.... Cleaner tighter bass, crisp highs... sound great in the garage... NOT as loud on the freeway as the stock speakers without the amp...
Next, installed the Infinity whatever speakers with the Alpine 445... Not as clean - not as much bass - a little louder at freeway speeds....
Now is where I am stuck.... I have a new amp to install and am planning on going back to the Polks with a RF PBR300X4 and see where that gets me... At that point I am done with that bike - when I get to it...
On my wife's bike I just installed the Kicker speakers and nothing else... I still think it sounds better then stock at low speed and freeway. So I am leaving it alone... Alone - I tell you - LOL (we will see)...
Unfortunately I just had 3 vertebra fused in my neck last week and will not be playing with this for a few months....
BUT - I did see something the other day on an other forum and was wondering if anyone had considered moving up to 6.5" speakers????
In a few spec's that I was looking at... They are not as deep, a hair larger and may not stick out as much... This could also increase the amount of out put...
Just a thought... but it will be weeks before I can look into that idea some more... Thoughts anyone?????? |

Posts: 2027 Brighton, TN | Webhair do you have the gain set on the low or high. One of two things should happen when you get near the maximum of the speaker or amp.
1. Distortion sets in which means you don't have enough amp to get it louder.
2. The speaker will reach its limits of its excursion and make a sound like it is hitting a solid object, which means more power than the speaker can handle.
What new amp are you installing?
You guys are making me Jonesin' to put in my old school Rockford Fosgate 4080 amp and have a run at this. It's a big amp is the only downside. Power to make your house lights dim.
The 6.5's won't be a direct drop in. Love to have me some, but I would have to do some custom work. |

Posts: 669 Peachtree City, GA | The new amp I have sitting in a box ready to go is a new Rockford Fosgate PBR300X4.... Size it right for where I want to put it and I think it will work out great.
As for the gain... I have tried it both ways with both speaker setups... It just does not have the power I am looking for... I guess you can say - I really like my music loud and clear... Or maybe I am going deaf... (don't tell my wife). ;-)
As for the speakers... I am planning on going back to the Polk's 525 with the new amp... They fit in great and ha better sound... In reading the specs on the 6.5... Not as deep, may not protrude as far out... Just a little larger diameter.... Higher wattage rating.... better response...
You know the deal - thinking is not always the best thing to do... as well as leaving well enough alone...
Since Best Buy carriers both and I have a friend their.... I was thinking of seeing if he can pull a set of each and see what we can work out... - it may be as simple as a correct spacer... (wishful thinking).

Posts: 2027 Brighton, TN | Having past experience with rockford that thing should rock your socks off in a hurricane. Mind boggling the power output in such a small package. I got to know if that works cause if it does, I'm gonna find some change under the sofa cushions and go get one. Also, let us know if you can get the 6.5's to fit without hitting the front grill. I can feel the fever coming back.
Then if you wanted to there was a guy who put a sub into the mount mechanism for the tour pack and you could see it right below the back seat. Sounded pretty good. I so want to do this. But I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system, I'm happy with the stock system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If repeated enough does it work? Not yet. |

Posts: 669 Peachtree City, GA | I kept trying that - it did not work for me.... so far...
As for the sub... I prefer to run without the trunk.... and keep everything close to "sleeper" looking...
I know in a couple of my trucks I was able to get some pretty good bass out 6.5" an a nice little Bi amp Alpine system... I had started with twin sealed 10" and the 12" and ended up really happy with just the 6.5" of course that was a SUV.... A little different then a bike. - well kind of.
Someday's - I think I need an new hobby....

Posts: 2027 Brighton, TN | I was running around in the early 90's with a T-bird and Sony head, two fosgate amps, boston acoustic separates 6.5 and tweets, 6x9's, and two 12's in a bandpass X order enclosure. That thing was rock concert loud and clean and clear. Loved it. Thanks for the reminiscing! Kept the amps will probably install them in something else at some point, if they don't disintegrate from old age.
Just think if you had the passenger backrest or modify a mount system to replicate the trunk on a smaller scale to hold the sub or a couple of 6.5's. OH the possibilities. That freaking thing would be off the charts. |

Posts: 763 Anderson, IN (48mi NE of downtown Indianapolis) | I tried a sub in a couple of different ways on the Vision. The best I found was to seal the front of a 10" sub to the tunnel at the bottom of the trunk. The trunk itself then becomes the enclosure for the back of the sub. The tunnel is open to atmosphere so the sound waves get out fine. It sounded real good in the garage. When I started the Vision, some of the low frequency was lost. A big V-twin has certain low frequency rumble, so I wonder if there is a cancellation affect. ??? At 70mph the sub was not noticable. I had to turn the gain up to make it audible at speed. This made the sub overpowering at slow speed or stopped. I decided that giving up the trunk space as not worth it and removed the sub.
6.5" speakers would sound much better than 5.25". I looked at switching to 6.5", but it would take some modification. There is very little depth in the front locations and the rear is not wide enough. If someone finds a way to make 6.5ers fit please share with us.

I haven't tried putting 6.25" speakers in but there might be space if you use shallow depth speakers and a spacer ring on the front of the inner mounting bezel. There's a bit of room (maybe .75"?) between the bezel and the outer speaker grill. The spacer would probably have to be custom made for the space and have 6.5" and 5.25" mounting holes . See my crude drawing.

Yes they fit and work - I have them in my wife's 08 Vision. Just make sure you get the 4 ohm version of them...

They have the best prices on Kickers and other top brands. Kickers are 1/3 the price of the cheapest suppliers listed in previous posts. Check it out. |
