Did my first oil change last night at home. Followed the manual and put 4.5 quarts back in, and here's where the fun begins. The dipstick showed the level at just below "Add 1 Quart" line. So started checking with some post here about oil capacity and everyone says 4.5 quarts. So after deciding to believe maybe the level needed to adjust overnight, I checked after work today. No luck still shows at least a quart if not more low. And since I can't find any other post similar to this I take it I have either a 6 quart pan or the wrong dipstick. Any advise?

Did you stand the bike upright to check it? Mine reads about a quart low when checked on the side stand.

And make sure the dip stick is screwed all the way in for checking.

ENGINE OIL LEVEL
1. Warm the engine for several minutes until operating
temperature is reached.
2. Stop engine and wait for 3-5 minutes.
3. Place the machine on a level area and hold it in an
upright position.
4. Remove and clean the oil off of the dipstick (D).
5. Screw the dipstick in until seated.
6. Remove dipstick and view oil level.
7. Oil level should be between ADD and FULL lines on
dipstick. If oil level is low, add Victory 20-40 Semi-
Synthetic engine oil to raise level to FULL mark. DO
NOT overfill.

Well my book says check oil with bike "straight up and down". You must have a different book or maybe you don't have a vision but something ells.
Its a pain in the ass to check straight up and down so I put the kick stand on a 2x4. I put in 4 qts start the bike till the oil light goes out shut off the bike and add my 1/2 qt.
That the was us city folks do it in minnesota.

My manual says to securely support the motorcycle on the sidestand when starting the whole procedure. Does not say anything about checking it with the bike off the stand or level. Also the illustration in my manual shows from the bottom dot on the dipstick is only half a quart. Mine dipstick says to add a whole quart. Is there two different dipsticks out there?

Found it in pre-ride checks, nice. You would think they would have reprinted that in the maintenance section. Hats off to all you that read the whole manual. Bet you stop and ask for direction also, thanks.

Pre-Ride Inspections Engine Oil Level The oil fill cap/dipstick is located on the right side of the vehicle. Always use the recommended oil. See page 262. Tip: The engine must be at normal operating temperature when checking the oil level. 1. Place the transmission in neutral. 2. Start the engine and allow it to idle for several minutes. 3. Stop the engine and wait 3-5 minutes before checking the oil level. 4. On level ground, straddle the motorcycle and bring it to the fully upright position. WOW, as I stated in my previous post, I found the information listed in "Pre Ride" section of my Vision owners manual. I would have thought that this information would have been listed in the "Maintenance" section of the manual. I was wrong, so thank you for all of the prompt replies. Have fun on your computers I'm going for a ride.

I did the whole five thing, then found out the washer was in the bottom of the drain pan, had to dump a bit anyway, it was quite interesting to say the least.

There is no need to sit on the Vision and to try and reach down to check the oil! The easiest way to check the oil is to first, when is is on the kickstand, remove and clean the dipstick and screw the dipstick back in until seated. Second, on level ground, bring motorcycle to a full upright position for a minute. set it back down on the kickstand, pull the dipstick and check the level. It takes a lot longer for the oil to run completely off the dipstick then it does to pull and check it.

Really, you guys have issues straddling the bike, leaning over and checking the dipstick? I actually found it to be the easiest method. Different strokes for different folks, I say......

Leaning over at my age is dangerous... doesn't mean that I shouldn't ride and check my oil... just means that safety for me is in doing so off the bike.

Its to bad that Vic or one of the aftermarket don't make a longer dip stick with marks on them for reading your oil on the kickstand.
Stupid ass harley did the same thing check up right then after fifteen years made a longer dip stick so you could check oil on kickstand.

One more little secret giveaway for the forum... you can read any and all motorcycle oil dip sticks while the bike is on the kickstand. Simply make sure that your oil level is correct by checking it however you are directed to... then lower the bike to the kickstand and mark with a file or knife where the oil level now is on the dipstick... wah-lah!!! That be the new mark... your oil level is now measurable while the bike is on the kickstand.

FYI the factories make the fluid levels measurable with the bike straight up because the dealers use lifts to work on your bikes that hold the bikes straight up and down. They could care less if it is convenient for you, the owner and rider.

Handy, that does sound like a reasonable assesment. Considering the same dipsticks apply to all the freedom motors except the early days, it makes more sense to mark at the constant spot - level. With your conclusion, there would have to be a dipstick different for every model as each would lean differently. Also given the ground you would lean on, and the wear of your kickstand the angle would change with the pad, or no pad.

I think it is a cool idea to make your mark, but if I were to check my oil it would be on the level. Just my .02 cents, wait, .01, market slipped again.

Just make sure it's warm, drain the oil damn good, like until it's just dripping slowly. Change the filter, put 4.5 qts back in and ride it. I don't check mine when I'm done. I already know it's good because I just drained it and filled it 4.5 qts. To me, it's that simple.

Put a milk crate under the rear tip limiter, verify bike is vertical then check.
