Posts: 2300 Georgia, west of Atlanta | Indian Motorcycle Recall
Indian has recalled 2009-2011 motorcycles due to safety requirement problems with the kickstands, and also headlight issues. Polaris, owner of Indian, says 699 motorcycles are affected.
Polaris says the Indian motorcycles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 123, "motorcycle controls and displays."
Polaris says the side-stand may not fold rearward and upward if it contacts the ground while the motorcycle is moving forward, increasing the risk of a crash.
Polaris also says the Body Control Module (BCM) can overload, causing the headlight to turn off in some incidents. This can also increase the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the side stand free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during August 2011. Owners may contact Indian at 651-408-7579.
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or visit safercar.org.

Posts: 1359 New Bohemia, Va | I don't think the expectation of the Indian rebirth was to sell in competition with anyone, seriously. Having talked with Mark Moses, a serious Indian Brand enthusiast, the audience is not the casual rider. A person buying an Indian wants an Indian regardless of what the other manufacturers are selling. One of the upstart philosophies was that there are enough high-end buyers that are attracted to the brand to buy if they know they are available. Basically, that makes all the other sales residual.
With that being said, I don't believe Polaris will stick to that philosophy but will try to maintain the traditional iconic look and quality, then bring down the price some for the rest of us that's always wanted an Indian but couldn't afford one.
Oh, and to all riders, don't forget to put your kick up.

Posts: 2300 Georgia, west of Atlanta | Cap, I actually hope they go the other way, make the Chief the biggest, baddest, most modern kick ass bagger on the planet. Something along the lines of the Vision but with a bigger water cooled engine and improve on any descrepancies they found with the Victory line. You know like largest storage capacity and absolute best stereo and comfort in the industry..............Then sell it for a Premium price........... |

I will agree with you Steve, the Indian could handle massive capacity and still maintain cruiser agility. I don't really like the idea of watercool but some folk live and die by it. Indian really has nothing to lose by it, and it can become a name synonymous with American hertiage and dependability. |

Back in 1979, my first new Virago - if you put the bike in gear with the side stand down - the engine stopped. So you COULDN'T drive away with it down. Why in the Hell haven't EVERY manufacturer adopted this simple OLD trick ???? |
