The plan is to let the dealer do every other service so as to check everything out. I will do the others, just an oil and filter change. The main reason is beause I'm cheap. The question I have is what type of oil to use. Full dino, dino syn blend or full syn? I'm not concerned about brands or which is best. I need to use one that is compatible with the factory oil to not cause problems down the road. Yes I searched and got tired of reading all bickering and didn't find the answer. Thanks in advance.

I'm only gonna say this as I new here and don't know the foggiest about Victory's. So I'm gonna tell you you what the dealer told me about two hrs ago. I was told that the 500 mile service has to be done by the dealer. I ask, because I do all my maintenace myself. If I don't know something that''s what these forum's are for. They said the 500 mile has to be done by them because it is the most critical. Supossedly They drain "all" the fluids, check for shavings with magnets, re-torque everything, and adjust the clutch. Supposedly two and a half hour job. (their words, not mine) After they do the 500 mile service, they said as long as I keep the reciepts for all oil, oil filters, fluids, ect. and log everything that I can do all my own maintenance and not have to worry about voiding my warranty.

Now for the o*l question...."They" said to use a syn blend and NOT to use full syn. I asked why? He said you need some of the detergents from the syn blend to keep the motor clean?? (his words, not mine) He said that a full syn. could cause the clutch to start slipping.

Which is why I was asking the people that actually ride these motorcycles instead of selling what they use. I know any oil thread can and normally does turn ugly. But if you don't know you gotta ask. Because I can telly from past experiences the manual ain't alway right nor is the dealer. I'm like you in the sense that I'm not going to run to the dealer everytime I need something done. First of all I don't wanna pay someone else for something I can do myself. Second, working on your own bike is how you learn what makes it tick!

Some have indicated they have experienced clutch slippage with some of the heavier full syn oils (20-50). If you experience slippage you can correct the problem by switching back to simi-syn for a while. Stay away from any oil with friction reduction modifiers. This would include any oil that says it's formulated for increased mileage. Always make sure the oil is rated Jaso MA. Both dyno and syn oils have the same detergent additives. Some brands claim to add more or better detergents but it has nothing to do with the dyno/syn question. All Jaso MA oils are compatible with each other.

Here is a link to a very good source of oil info. Lots of info and lots to read. It will answer many question. Enjoy!

wtwhitelaw - this site is known for if you push the submit button twice, even though the screen doesn't refresh, it will give you two nice postings of the same thing, same for responses. No big deal just use the one you don't want so the folks on here like CApneMO who are stuck in an airport far away from his second love to be able to vent his withdrawals.

I believe I was misconstruing the question you had, but by reading the other one I think I have figured out what the real question might be. The cheapest way to go and using a JASO MA rating that I have found is the Rotella T 15-40 in a white bottle for about $15 at wally world, then using the ST1737 (I think, the CapnNemo knows this one) oil filter at $2.37 at Wally world again. Reuse the crush washer, I have the same one after 50,000 miles of oil changes, no leaks either. Runs you out the door probably less than $20 bill. If you extend the change interval to 5,000 miles you just doubled your money.

why didn't you just ask then! Geez!

Possibly a better way to skin the cat would be to ask:

What is the absolute cheapest way to get an oil change within the guidelines?

I win, I win, what do I get? Do I get a free oil change? Or possibly the option to hang with the oil guru DoneTracey?

Or since wtwhitelaw started this madness, he owes me two Dr. Peppers and a shot of something of the adult flavor.

However, I bet that we have not managed to get the absolute cheapest oil change.

Since you are gonna ride for many miles, buy the oil by the 55 gallon drum of the Rotella T and bring the price down to less than $11 per gallon. Buy the oil filters by the Cases and oh let the savings begin.

Then I just looked up AMSOIL for CapnNemo and found out if he were to buy the AMsOIL in 55 gal drum price / gallon would be $37 or less. That's still less than the $60 oil change kit from the dealer. That would be less than 9.27 / qt.

Where is Brighton? I grew up in Maryville. How about Diet Dr Pepper and Crown? I don,t have the room for a drum of oil so the gallon jug will do.

North of memphis about an hour. I do enjoy me some crown, though. Where's Maryville and where are you now?

Maryville is just outside of Knoxville. The Knox airport is in the same county. Flowery Branch Ga is where I'm at now. About 1 hour from the South Carolina state line, NE of atlanta. About 1 hour from Helen where the Victory SE meet is.
