So I took my new Vision for its 500 mile service. On the way there I used the cruise control...

After the service when I went to use the cc, the red light on the switch would not even turn on. I was about a half hour out from my dealer (who is almost 2 hours from my home) and decided not to turn back but to bring the bike home and investigate.

I called the dealer who said "there is nothing that we would have done that would cause the cc not to work." (The are new to Victory in the past year)

So friends, any suggestions as to what might have gone wrong? I'll poke around, follow some of the prior posts (search is a good tool!) but for the life of me, I cannot figure out what THEY might have done to create this problem.

I would plan to enjoy the 2 hour ride back at your earliest convience (any excuse to ride) and tell them to fix the darn thing under warranty...regardless if they feel they didn't do anything to cause the cc to not work. Fact is, it doesn't work...new bike, under warranty, I'd make it their problem and be looking forward to the riding time!

My front brake switch stuck and the Brake lights were always on. That took out the ability to use the cruise. It was fixed under warranty.

Take it back and make them fix you up!

Ok fellas here is what I found. I checked the fuses first (a great thing to learn how to do on the bike) and they were all good. I checked my brake lights - a ok. Then as I looked down the right side of the front fork/handlebar area - HELLO, a disconnected connector that traced back to the cc switch! I plugged it back in and BINGO, it woiked.

So, how did this become disconnected at the dealership? I have a theory, let me know what you think. They used a bike jack under the engine and the front forks/tire flopped to an extreme angle and pulled a weak connector apart. Any other thoughts?

As I plugged the connector back together I realized that there is a big harness/connector (that has this one as a child off of it) that just sorta moves a bunch if you go all the way left then all the way right. Has there been any reports of fatigue on these wires or connector? I'm a little concerned and will watch it. It kinda surprises me that this part of the wiring isn't a little more elegantly engineered. PLUS, the offending connector did appear to have any clips/locks to keep it together - just a compression fitting. (or did I miss it?)

Thanks for all the suggestions and input. I love my 09 Nessy.

Then they didn't do a full 500 mile service. There are several required items listed below that are in the vicinity of the cruise control.

Hmmm, perhaps in their "inspection" of things - like front fork oil (would they have taken the fork caps off to do this?) they bumped or otherwise moved the connector in a way that disconnect it??? Thank God I bought a Victory and should not have to use them (the closest dealer) for any repair. In fact, if I need any warranty repair I WON'T go to them...

What do you think the word "inspect" means to a dealership tech? It means glance at at best... maybe touch to see if there is a fluid present. Now you know why I am doing my own 500 mile inspection.

So how do you inspect steering bearings? Pull front end a part.
How do you inspect front fork oil? Take it a part.
How do you inspect fuel filter? Pull it out.
If you don't pull it a part you can't inspect these items. Back in the day we would put little marks on bolts and nuts just to see and yup they never looked at any of the stuff. Harley has on there 500 mile check up check torque on head bolts. Well there are one on each cylinder if you don't pull the rocker box's you can't.
I think they have this 500 mile check up is to make sure the assembly line did things right.
Most of the riders I have read about here have never read there manuals. When it came to the part they tells you to inspect or lube they close the manual and tell them selves they know it all.
The guys that read and study there manuals are there the ones that are riding trouble free.
Sorry I went off the deep end

There's no replacement for knowing your own bike. Especially if you are heading out on the open road for days at a time. Harley has a kazillion dealers all over the country because nobody would leave town on one if there weren't a dealer at every exit. Vics don't have that problem but they are still machines and $&it happens. JS5 you are much better off now knowing what you do about the things you've discovered on your bike. Keep it up and there will be no real surprises as you ride into the future.
As little time as most vic mechanics get to spend working on these bikes I'm sure there are a few of us that could teach them a thing or two. Learn your bikes guys and ride into the sunset with confidence!

Yep I fully agree! I only took it to the dealer to solidify my 2 year warranty. I KNOW that it isn't mandatory but I wanted to eliminate that argument if I had a problem down the line.

From now on, I'm doing all oil changes and inspections, etc. etc.

Nessy now has almost 1k and I'm lovin' her.

JS5Owner, KUDO's to you for making the effort and finding the solution. I would have been like HLUSN8 and just taken it back to the dealer! Now, the real fun begins as you search for a dealer that has a qualified wrench to work on your bike!!

I agree completely with getting the dealer to do their part. We are in a unique position compared to those who ride less reliable bikes. Their wrenches get tons of time and experience under the "hoods" of their bikes, ours don't. It's hard to blame our dealers. Who can afford to pay someone as a mechanic, say 18 - 25 bucks an hour, to change oil and add chrome pieces. A few have made real investments in there shop staff but the little guys just can't. With time this will go away, but I'm afraid it's going to be quite a while. All the more reason to really get to know your bike. That way when the inexperienced must work on it you know exactly what they are getting into. No piling on the BS by a shop guy in no-wheres-ville when you don't have your own garage to park it in.

Glad to see you figured out your problem JS5, I know that gives you more satisfaction in a way, and confidence for the next "head scratcher". These bikes really aren't that complicated, and once you've explored a little under its "skins" you know pretty much where everything is. Good luck and ride safe!
