I wanted to go for a ride last night, but must have left the key on. No biggie. I hooked up the charger and let her charge all night.

Today, when I turn on the key, I hear the fuel pump hum but the dash lights do not light up. No headlight, just running lights. Starter spins but does not engage the flywheel. WTH? My charger showed last night that the battery was discharged, but today, the needle moves in the opposite direction further to the left of red. Have I had an electrical meltdown?

I don't get the usual fuel pump surge sound, just a hum.

When I reconnect the charger, the leads get hot and the charger trips it's internal breaker.

Something ain't right in Denmark.

Most likely you have a cell in the battery that is shorted. This can happen if the battery is too deeply discharged and than over-charged. All it takes is for one of the plates to warp and touch together and that's the end of it.

I would not turn the ignition on any more until you have replaced the battery.

The only safe way to charge one of these batteries is a slow trickle charge with a quality battery charger. Any type of fast charge cycle can and likely will destroy the battery, and is also dangerous for the electronic systems on the bike if you turn the key on while it is connected in the mode.

Good luck.

This possibly sounds like the charger was connected backwards, but more likely is an indication of what I spoke of in my earlier response. If I had to guess I'd say the battery was damaged beyond recovery with the deep discharge that occurred when you left the key on. After that there was no saving it.

If connected properly, and the leads immediately got hot, this indicates a short in the battery causing the charger to load down to the max, just as if you connected the to leads directly to each other. If you were to do this on purpose the charger would act the same way.

Definitely change out the battery before you do any more to the bike.

FUBAR battery would be my guess. One cell or maybe two are F'ed' and it doesn't have enough power to spin the starter like it should. You probably didn't leave the key on, the battery was already toast.
That being said:
Just to be sure, have you checked the connections on the battery? Make sure they are clean. I would pull the wires off and check it with a battery tester because I have one. Maybe go buy one, then you'll know for sure.

Dead battery. Trip to Wal-mart, $70, and all is well. Thanks all for your help. Thanks Kevin for the call! Not worth bugging the dealer about. This forum is more helpful.

What model battery did you get from Walmart. I am sure that I will need one someday. I am still running with the one I bought the Vision with...The dealer changed out the stock battery before I received the bike.

Bought the Wal-mart Everstart battery that crossed referenced in their book for a Vision. Yes, they actually had it listed! ES20LBS  Perfect copy of the original battery and perfect fit in our battery bracket.  No mods needed at all.  Sealed battery.  Perfect.

Hey doc, great to hear no real problems with the bike. As you may or may not have noticed from earlier threads here that the vision can be a little squirrely when battery voltage is low.

If you don't do this already I would highly recommend getting a battery minder / battery tender and get in the habit of plugging in the bike whenever you pull in the garage. It will only cost you a few cents a month, it will actually be good for your battery, and even if for some reason you leave something turned on on the bike, say the trunk light, (this has happened to a number of people) the battery will still be fine the next morning.

Just a friendly recommendation, again glad you are back on the road.

BTW the cheapest I've found for a battery minder plus for agm's is about 49.00 on line. Good luck!

+1 Good battery.

just a point of reference, not against the trickle charge but I never use them. I replaced my battery just shy of 3 years when the fuel pump went. Since I didn't know exactly why it was acting the way that it did, I ruled out the battery by replacing it. However, I also noticed it was getting a little sluggish, so it was getting close, I didn't want failure in the desert either. I don't think the trickle charger would have given me any more active life beyond 4 years, but I guess I'll never know.

Victory batteries are the worst.... we use to have to replace the stock batteries all the time on the floor models. Once they drain down a couple of times they do not have a charge. I bought a battery from Auto Zone and it has been a great battery. No issues at all .... it was around $65.

So while we are on this battery issue. I recently installed an amp in my 09 vision. Originally I hooked it up directly to the battery. After a couple days I went to start the bike and the battery was completely dead. Lesson learned, I then changed the power draw to a switched outlet. No more problems I thought. Now there have been several times when I am sitting at a light with the bike idling and the charging gauge indicated approx 12 amps or slightly less. If I bring up the revs to a little over 1000 rpm the amps go back to 14 1/2 where they should be. This does not happen all the time. The bike does still start althoough it does not seem to turn over near as fast as what it should indicating the battery is weak. Do you think I toasted the battery when it completely drained or is there something going bad with my charging system?? Thanks for any help.

I didn't know, until this great board hipped me, that the switch for the light in
the trunk can be slid off. I drained my battery completely once by not shutting
the trunk all the way. 4 days later........ I still have the same battery today
that came with the Vision in October of 2007. My Goldwing battery is over 8
years old now. I drained it completely once as well. I guess I am lucky with batteries?

I use a battery tender occasionaly, like if the bike sits for more then a week, I do an
overnight charge, but remove it when the green light is solid. I am too cheap to keep
it hooked up all the time. That is Air Conditioning money being spent.

In my older cars I'll push the battery to the absolute limit, in my motorcycles, not so. For some reason low batteries can wreck havoc on you prized machine and trying to save a mere $70.00 bucks to squeeze out another season can cost you a lot more. Maybe it is an old wives tale, a myth, or superstition, I'd rather just run the 3 to 4 years and swap it out even if it has good life left in it.

By the way, I'm as cheap as they come...
