Dear Fellow Vision Riders (and the rest of you rugged individualist Victory owners):

As motorcyclists we are uniquely aware of the dangers presented by our chosen recreation, and we debate helmet laws with the same passion that is invoked by politics and religion. As adults we understand the risks and act as we see fit.

Unfortunately, children too are subjected to head trauma from simple everyday accidents. Traumatic brain injuries occur in the most innocuous of ways. Falling off a bike, skateboard, swing, or down a set of stairs can result in injuries that are devastating and may require years of special medical treatment, physical therapy, educational and vocational training.

I think that I have mentioned in previous posts that I am a board member of a school for children and young adults with moderate to severe multiple disabilities resulting from traumatic brain injuries, autism, birth defects, etc.

These are kids who cannot be helped by public schools, who's parent have limited resources and who need professional, qualified help learning to communicate, with socialization, with physical development, academics, and as they reach high school age, with vocational training and independent living skills.

The HBIC has been helping children like these since 1967 and the Cleta Harder Developmental School was started to further and expand the mission in 1981 by providing a day school and summer camp.

HBIC runs a number of annual fundraising events including a Poker Run hosted by the LaHabra Lions Club (which I will post on the calendar again this year) , to help support our programs and expand the number of children that we can assist. The poker run is scheduled for June 25th; I would love the opportunity to meet some of you at this event.

However, with the economic situation and the resulting budget crisis that are affecting all states, available funding for programs that help the neediest of our citizens is under threat and traditional fundraising methods result in smaller returns. In order to do my part to help keep the HBIC mission alive and healthy this year I am reaching out to everyone that I know, and to the Vision Riders community to ask that you take a moment to visit the HIBC website ( http://www.hibc.org) to see the work that we do.

If you have the ability and the inclination to donate even a small amount on line ( http://www.hbic.org/Donate.html ), or if those of you who are close by will come ride with us in June, I would be eternally grateful and consider it a great personal favor.

You will notice that HBIC does not have a slick, expensive website. Funding goes to the important work of providing a safe environment, the needed equipment, transportation, supplies and the dedicated professional teachers to help these children.

Donations to the HBIC are tax deductible.

I realize that there are a multitude of worthy charities that need our help, I thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to seeing some of you in June or on the road.

Fred Brooking

It was a nice ride, good to get down by PCH where it was cooler, sorry I missed you though. THe tri-tip was wonderful and the band was right on. I look forward to winning the Camero. I hope you didn't waste money buying tickets for that raffle, they said I had the winning one. Not many Visions there. I guess that made it easier to win the 'Kids Choice Award'
Thanks for the invite, I will plan on it next year as well.

Glad that you had a good ride, and took photos! Why didn't I think of bringing a camera? (Slap side of head). The wife never travels without one, but since the RA kept her off the bike this weekend I never even thought about carrying one.

The morning run down to the beach and up PCH to Rudy's was nice and cool. I saw a TV show last night that highlighted Slater's 50/50 (4th card stop) and their 50% beef - 50% BACON burger. Lucky I didn't look at the menu, or I would never have made it to the last check in and lunch. Now I'm going to have to go back and see what we missed. Seriously , 50% bacon! How can you go wrong with that?

The Camaro they are giving way sure did look sweet! I am beginning to wonder if manipulation is a genetic characteristic in beauty queens, or if they just go through a training program. My riding buddy Milton swears that the girls told him that HE has the winning ticket.

Sorry that I missed meeting you, we were the 3rd and 4th bikes to finish despite stupid GPS tricks. I left pretty soon after the band began to play. My wife had a list of errands a mile long, and needed help. Those darn HD colored balloons at the entrance to Pete's Ponderosa tried to decapitate me on the way out. I guess I should have taken it as a sign to stick around a bit longer.

Not sure that the change to a Saturday (rather than Sunday) run was a great success, we'll see when the numbers come in. Thank you very much for your support of HBIC and the kids. Let me know if there is a way that I can return the favor.
