Posts: 206 Lumber Bridge, NC United States | Ok just seen a commercial for the can-am spider and they are saying, you can now get your motorcycle license on a spider. who's stupid idea is this and what if you sell it and go to two wheels? will you be-able to handle it. the law says we have to wear protection and I am not saying that is a bad thing, but getting your indorsment on three wheels REALLY! the only one that will suffer is you and the people you kill because you can't handle two wheels. Ok law makers it's time for your drug and alcohol test. do it on two wheels like everybody else had to. |

South Dakota law states you take your driving test on the motorcycle that you are going to ride, law classifies a motorcycle as having 2 or 3 wheels.
She has ridden a 2 wheeler before but was just more comfortable on 3 and she will probably NEVER again ride two wheels. |

Eliminates the problem of giving some bozo a motorcycle endorsement for 3 wheels, then having them kill themselves on two.

All you had to do was accelerate in a straight line, then ride in a donut between the two lines clockwise, then counterclockwise. Has it changed since then? I assume the written is the same whether on a bike or a spyder. |

Posts: 1632 Jasper, MO | I've never taken a motorcycle skills test and, yes, I have a motorcycle endorsement on my driver's license. There was no motorcycle test 45 years ago. There was no motorcycle endorsement until 1968 in my state, and those of us who already had a driver's license before then were "grandfathered in". When you renewed your license they would just ask you if you wanted the new MC endorsement. The actual license was a paper card that they filled out on a typewriter. If you wanted the MC endorsement, they would just type an X in the box.
I haven't been properly trained yet.

You should go home and park your bike, you are obviously a danger to others...

Posts: 1359 New Bohemia, Va | grant it, the test to get your license is rather lame in some locales. I've carried an endorsement since 1984 and didn't ride from 1988 to 2005 except one time. In the true scheme of things we help each other out and encourage folks to do the right things for their sake and the sake of others. We would hope that all of us would do the right thing, but everyone of us is a disaster waiting to happen if we let our guard down for just a second. With that said, we should all just go home and park it. |

Well this varies state by state.
In my state, Iowa, you CAN get a motorcycle endorsement on a 3 wheeled motorcycle BUT your license will show a restriction stating you are only allowed to ride a 3 wheeled motorcycle - you cannot legally ride a 2 wheeler then. Get a "regular" license and you can ride either.
Lets assume in your state you CAN get a regular license on a trike....
I guess I dont see what the problem is. You can get a learners permit and ride on the streets without doing ANY skill testing......so not much difference really. Atleast someone learning on a 3 wheeler and later switching to 2 wheels will have learned SOME skills. In my state there are plenty of unlicensed riders....I dotn think THIS would concern me near as much.
