Posts: 262 Flowery Branch Ga | Not really Victory specific. The helmet laws have changed in Ga. A friend of mine was pulled over and ticketed for using a non DOT helmet. Wife spoke to a guy at the grocery store (she saw him ride in with a non DOT helmet) about the law change and he said a friend of his also got ticketed in another part of the state. I spoke with a Gwinnett county detective while I was buying a DOT approved helmet (too big, too hot, and too fugly) who was kind enough to confirm that the law was indeed changed and that most agencies in the state are out looking for violaters. The first offense fine is $340.
I don't want to start a debate about helmets or helmet laws, we all have our own opinions. Just want to give everyone a heads up.

Posts: 785 Mt. Vernon, WASH. | Want to have some fun? Using a DOT & SNELL approved half helmet like a BELL Commander, find a long, cheap wig that will fit over the helmet. Wait for the stop and ask innocently 'what's the problem officer?' while letting him see you have a buckled.legal helmet on, what's he gonna do? write you because he's stupid 'your honor, the officer here apparently hates having his chain yanked' then allow the judge to examine the helmet, with the wig still on. You might get some minor blowback, but nothing compared to what the officer will hear from the judge. |

Posts: 785 Mt. Vernon, WASH. | Yep! back in the late 60's when Washington first instituted a helmet law. The law originally said 'helmet must be worn and buckled' well, it fits around my knee and will buckles. Next phase was the wig, then it got to where it wasn't any fun anymore so I became a semi rebel. |

Yup, if the helmet has a "DOT sticker", then the law enforcement officer has no basis for issuing a ticket, as they are not qualified to make that determination as to whether a helmet meets legal standards.. as long as the lid appears to be legit by virtue of being properly labeled. If you have a sticker inside which says something like "novelty helmet, not to be used for protection in the event of a crash", you may want to remove that sticker. I have been stopped for the beanie and let go by the Calif. highway patrol, once they saw the DOT sticker on the back of my thin carbon fiber beanie. |

Tenn (possibly) and Texas. The problem for LEOs and such, at least in Texas, is you cant stop someone to question the insurance amount alone. Now if you stop for other reason(s), then you can check. But the proof the $ figure on the insurance card is tough. I haven't seen one (insurance card) that states exactly.."$ for each motorcycle accident"...maybe they are out there, but I haven't seen it. Texas also had written that if you have taken the MSF, you can ride helmet free, over 21. Texas had a "licence plate sticker" program that went with this originally, but I think that got cost prohibitive, so they did away with that. Personally, I ride without a helmet, but I am not completly sure that my medical insruance meets what the state says it wants. I don't think, in Texas, anyone is completely sure on the how to provide the proof of medical coverage. It's a mess, and I haven't had to deal with a LEO stop since it started. I guess, because I don't look like a thug, or a kid, on my bike. |

Posts: 101 Springfield, TN | On this subject I have heard that if you live in a state with a helmet law and ride without a helmet in another state and get injured your insurance has the right to reject medical claims based on the riders failure to observe the laws of their home state... anyone know the specifics? |
