Posts: 71 Willmar, MN | I have an 08 Vision TP with S1L1 pipes, filter, etc. I am thinking about making an intake plate and putting in Lloydz cams and a PC V and am wondering about mileage. I ride about 15,000 miles a year and mostly 2 up. We went from Minnesota to New york in July and out to California, Oregon and Washington in September. I average about 38 to 41 mpg. My question is where will the mileage head...north or south? I have seen quite a few posts that people are experiencing significantly better mileage after adding the intake plate and PC V, not sure how the cams will effect that but it may improve it also. Let me know what you experiences are.

Posts: 37 Coos Bay, Oregon | rf43mn, I have an 08 w/ S1L1 pipes, last Aug I had the plate, controller and cams done by Kevinx, my milage has improved from 42 to around 44 when I keep my wrist out of it. The best thing about this mod is the improved engine perfomance, better response whether you are two up or not, this mod just makes that 106 breath better and runs the way it should have to begin with. This is the best money I have invested in Vision to date. If you have the budget for it don't think twice, miles of smiles. Scott

Posts: 1632 Jasper, MO | I have the cams, intake plate, VFCIII, and ECU. My actual mileage, checked with a notebook and calculator, has stayed about the same as stock. My mileage according to the trip computer has gone up a 3 or 4 MPG. I think the fuel controller, which operates AFTER the fuel flow sensor for the trip computer, is confusing the trip computer a bit and giving the impression of better fuel economy. According to it, I'm now getting 43-44 mpg. The fuel controllers add fuel after the computer takes its reading, so the computer is getting false readings because of the fuel controller. I'm actually still averaging about 40 MPG, the same as stock. Power is much improved. I agree with Scott. This is how they should have come from the factory. Do the cams and ECU. You'll gain 25 horsepower and your powerband will be extended about 1300 RPM higher, from 4500 to 5800 RPM, with no loss of low end power. Money well spent. Your fuel mileage won't go down unless you start having fun with that extra power above 4500 RPM. If you start using those extra ponies a lot, you'll have to feed them. Just cruising around on a trip, you won't notice much difference in gas mileage.
You're not that far from one of the best guys to do the cams and stuff for you. Call Rylan Vos at 402-659-9655. He is a member here (Vicbuilder) and runs The Vic Shop near Des Moines, Iowa. He does good work and is very reasonable on his rates. He is a Lloydz certified mechanic and installer of Lloydz stuff.

| While my Vision is still completely stock with the exception of my custom exhaust tips, I am seriously considering going with the Ness Big Honkers, Loydz intake plate and cams, and with the DynoJet Power Commander V with the auto tune module. I would really like to hear from anyone that has done similar and can give a completely honest review of seat of the pants performance and real life mileage figures. | |

What kind of budget are we talking about here? I know different dealers have different prices for install, but I'm just looking for "general" price ideas. My dealer says that engine work on my '09 is steeper since they have to pull the engine.

That would be correct if they do it "by the book". Lloyd Greer is the developer and source for most of the parts used in these upgrades. You can look up the retail prices yourself on his website. http://www.lloydz.com/ Lloyd also figured out a way to cut the installation time of the cams down to about 2 hours for an experienced installer, and it's done without pulling the motor. It's pretty slick. He has taught his method to several people, including KevinX and Rylan Vos. Have your mechanic get in touch with Lloydz for the details, if they don't already know about Lloydz method.
Rylan installed the VM1 cams, VFCIII, and Lloydz intake plate on my bike in a couple of hours or so. I installed the reprogrammed ECU myself (simple remove and replace).
The intake plate goes for $84.95, the VFCIII goes for $264.99, and the VM1 cams are $399.00. On your '09, you would need the cam carrier kit to be able to use the VM1 '08 cams and it lists for $460. HOWEVER, Lloyd has developed a new version of the VM1 cam to direct fit the later bikes without the need for the cam carrier kit. It was supposed to be ready for sale by now, but his suppliers have been behind. Call Lloydz for pricing and details. I'm sure the revised cams will be cheaper than the cam and carrier kit. The reprogrammed ECU is the icing on the cake and you can send yours to be reprogrammed. The last I knew, that cost about $225, but you'll need to check current pricing for your bike. Labor should be 2- 3 hours for all of it.
I spent about $1300 to get my '08 upgraded, including the labor. Even if you use the "08 cams and the cam carrier kit on your '09, the parts would run $1435. You could probably knock off maybe $400 if you wait for Lloydz new cams for the later bikes. Add 2-3 hours shop time to the bill.
You'll want the cams, intake plate, and a fuel controller at the minimum. I highly recommend the reprogrammed ECU if you do the other things. Exhaust changes are optional. It all works real good, even with a stock exhaust.

Posts: 199 Salt Lake City | Sorry to hijack rdbudd; I really appreciate the response. The number is quite a bit less that I expected. It would be sweet to take a ride on a VV like yours that has been upgraded; this is such a sweet machine straight out of the showroom.....
Thanks again, sir. | |

You're welcome. They are sweet machines, and the Lloydz upgrades make them even sweeter. Simply put, the Lloydz upgrades put the power of the Vision equal to, or better than the vaunted GL1800 Goldwing. You're welcome to ride mine if our paths ever cross. One of the best parts of the deal is (and getting back to the original question) the fuel economy isn't negatively affected by the upgrades either.
Goldwings generally dyno around 95 to 100 RWHP and 100 to 105 RWTQ. Most of the Lloydz upgraded Visions are producing 110 to 115 RWHP and 110 to 115 RWTQ. Some folks have numbers of 120+ horsepower. The totally stock Vision is usually in the 80-85 HP and 95-100 TQ range. My Vision, with the cams, intake, VFCIII, and ECU (with stock exhaust) will flat walk away from GL1800s when we're both in 5th gear at any speed from 45 MPH and up. I still beat them by 1 or 2 MPG on fuel economy on trips too.
Thanks Lloyd and Rylan.

Posts: 284 mansfield, MA United States | I can tell you the MPG's go down when the HP goes up. Don't be fooled by people who say they get better MPG because the bike tells them they do. When you put on the fuel controller it tricks the computer into dumping more gas into the bike. You need to check your mpg the old way Gallons / miles ridden. I have a Vision that is someplace north of the 120 HP mark and I don't think a wing will come close to me. But don't tell my wife any onf this. I told her I did the Llodyz mod's to save on gas. I even showed her I was getting 50 MPG

| Your mileage will increase until you do the big bore kit like Fred.
I get 43-44MPG on my bike all the time. Riding 2 up through the mountains all all the time.
The only time it drops is when I am just blasting around town being stupid.
Then I will drop down to like 35MPG.
