Hey guys, I am considering adding some accent lighting to my ride. I dont want it over blinged ghetto but
maybe some strategic lights in the engine area etc. I have heard that there are lighting restrictions as well as
color of light restrictions. Anyone know what part of this if any is true? Also curious if anyone has been
stopped or ticketed for accent lighting before. Sounds like this could be an interesting topic.
We can also post about brands, location of installs, etc etc.

Thanks Visionaries

TimS has some pics in his gallery of RED accent lighting and led turn signals outboard of the mirrors.

I think there are probably a couple of old threads that cover some accent lighting installs Id start by seaching for threads with his handle.

Stop by your State Patrol District Office (or whatever the staters are called in your state) and ask them. Might as well get the story straight from the guys with the gold shields as opposed to talking to 'the guy, who talked to the guy, who was near the guy ...' Washington had quite the peeing contest over fenderless T Bucket roadsters and blue dot tail lamps until a few years ago.
I know that what's legal in your state might be a trip to jail two states over, some states like Washington don't make bike insurance mandatory (but you'd be a fool not to..) and I've had a couple minor hassles in years past on old bikes, in other states because 'no proof of insurance' until you talk to a Magistrate or trooper supervisor and explain the deal and insist they look up the RCW laws for Waahington.

The only color that LEO's are pretty picky about is blue lights going down the road (rightfully so).  If you are going to install aux LED lighting just make sure it has it's own switch.  Technically, it's easy to "break the law" and put too many lights on a bike.  Real world, if you just have the engine and wheels lit up and are not being a distraction on the road (or trying to look like an emergency vehicle) you probably won't get hassled about it.  If you do get pulled over and show the officer that you can and will turn them off, it will probably be a non-event.  None of this is really set in stone.  It's a judgement call from both sides.

I run the Lizard Lights (7 colors) & the Ice Blue really matches the color of the dash lighting perfectly !!!

Here in Canada they have a problem with blue lights anywhere and Red lights in any other position than the rear of the bike, both are a violation of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Check you state laws. Here in Oklahoma you can not go down the road with red or blue as running lights due to the emergency vehicles. You may want to swing by your local PD to see if they can answer your questions

It's funny how common of a question this is and yet to find any clear cut legal interpretation on the web is either hard to find or not there. If it is illegal, then this law should be easy to find online.

BTW, I have the multi color LEDs for my engine compartment http://www.customdynamics.com/wizard_lights_color_changing_led_acce...

I love them and they were easy to install. Have not been pulled over yet.

I have some wicked new white LEDs strips that are 14" long (each) and will run along the top of each mirror (facing forward) and then curve down along the sides.  They are about as thick as a nickle and fire forward, towards the leading edge of the strip.  They are unbelievably thin and powerful. Around $25 at AutoZone.  The cool thing is the package has a built in battery so you can light them off in the store to get a feel for how bright they are.  I'll be tapping them into the HID wire so they'll go on/off with the HID.  This will give my bike that "Audi" look with the LED's curving around the edges of the fairing.  They will be running lights.  I'll have to paint the top of the strips black to blend in with the mirror fairing because the top is clear and you can see the wiring.

well I installed 360 red led lights from joe florida on my vision in the fall. I have them inside my front forks, rear swing arm, in the back of both cheese wedges, under the tank under the engine, under the rear body so it looks like i'm hovering on a cloud of red unfortunatly the bike is in the storage building that is still burried in the snow so no pics are available but as soon as I can get the bike out for the season I repost with pics and tell you if I have gotten any tickets for the red light. My eletrcaglide was covered in blue lights and never got bothered by the cops but we;ll see

Every state is different, so you need to do a bit of research on yours (or any that you travel in frequently).

I actually got all my LED lighting from AutoZone. Used the flexible strips and a few of the pods. I wired it to a rocker switch in the 4th position on the dash. I use it constantly at night and have also done so while on several multi-state trips.

I have NEVER been stopped despite the fact I know it IS illegal.
