Posts: 1229 Rancho Cucamonga, CA | Nothing remarkable, some blueing of the pipes, but nothing where it looks like it got to hot. heat shields all are in good shape.
Never any backfiring or popping.
Had a strong smell of burnt glass the first few rides, thought it was the mufflers breaking in.
Have only put 200 mi. on with the Thrush mufflers.

| What do the spark plugs look like? If there snow white like most of the country your way to lean.
When you slid the muffler on did it go on hard or did it just slid on real easy? If it went on easy take it off and put some more cross hatch cuts in it. It kinda looks like the pipe might not be clamped tight. I have run into mufflers that don't tighten down tight even though they feel tight. |

Posts: 1229 Rancho Cucamonga, CA | Could this have damaged the glasspack? I think I'll put on my old S1L1's back on until I figure this out. For $20, heck I'll just order a new one. I'm not real happy with how the heatshields mount to the Thrush mufflers anyway, or the mounting straps so I may just take the new one to a welder and do it right. Absolutely love the sound from them. |

Posts: 1632 Jasper, MO | I haven't put these on my bike, but the picture looks like the paint is just burning off. I've seen the same pattern on those mufflers on my old truck. Doesn't the right side of our exhausts flow more than the left, because the system is really a two into one, with a crossover to the left pipe.
I'm betting it's just burnt paint, not soot.

I had that thought also. I was hoping for some feedback from people that have Thrush mufflers on to see if this is normal.
Tom, if my muffler is fried, I may take you up on that. |

Posts: 104 Corona, CA | I cut up the stock muffler and got it so that I could slide the OEM parts over the Thrush muffler and have the hangers and bolt in the rear line up . Just tack weld them and you're in business. |

Posts: 1229 Rancho Cucamonga, CA | I have not had anyone with thrush mufflers say this has happened to them. A few (non thrush riders) think it is normal for the paint to discolor and a few think it is getting to hot. I switched back to my S1L1s just to see if the bike is the problem - it's working great. I am going to reverse the mufflers and see what happens. I don't think it could get so hot as to melt the glasspack so I will reuse them.
Now that there are better ways to mount the Thrush mufflers, I feel better about putting them back on also. |

Posts: 24 Hanover, Md | Sorry Darrell, I just found this thread. I have had the Thrush pipes on for about 700 miles or so, and the right pipe looks the same as yours, for the entire length. The left one is still red. I also noticed the glass burning smell for a while, and the bike was running very lean. I noticed that my head pipe for the forward jug would glow pretty bright if I let the bike idle for more than a few minutes. Seamed to run well coming up through the gears, and at speed. It never stumbled when I would give it throttle. I figure I definitely need fuel control. I get a little bit of backfire upshifting when its cold. I guess that the fuel computer has been able to compensate a little for the lean condition at idle, because the head pipe does not get as hot as it did when I first did the install. I am very happy so far with these pipes, and look forward to even more improvement when I get the fuel controller. |

Posts: 1229 Rancho Cucamonga, CA | Thanks, that makes me feel much better about putting them back on. I think the dealer remapped my bike before I bought it. It had S1L1s and I have never had any popping. I know they are 1/2 ID narrower, but they are straight through pipes also. Boy does that 1/2" change the sound. So much deeper. |

Posts: 1229 Rancho Cucamonga, CA | I put them back on and have done about 250 miles since. Nothing else seems to have changed. I only worry about when I take it in for service if they will give me a hassle. I've got a 3 year, free service plan. |
