I have come to notice, that when I notice, my speedometer will lose a mile sometimes between rides. It was shortly after getting the bike that I first noticed this but never told the dealer about it. I figure over the past three years I've probably tranversed quite a few miles than what actually shows up. I finally recorded what happens.

Yesterday morning I woke to frost on the bike.

Then I rode to work and when I parked, I noted I had just rolled 86,500. I took a picture.

That evening I was saddling up to head home and I noticed the speedo read 86,499, a mile less. This is the part that gets interesting. I rolled a mile before it achieved 86,500 again.

I've noted this before many times and have only gone "hmmmm". I shared this on other occassions, (yes, me) and not one responded to having the same issue. Since I don't look at me odometer everytime I turn it off and back on again, I just wonder how many more miles the bike has than what it's actually showing. Another Vision quirk I guess.

let's assume that I start the vehicle twice and day and shut it off, and this is an every day occurance. That would be about 2,300 miles lost. But being conservative (and a conservative), I know that it doesn't do it every single time, but have witnessed it about 10 times in ownership. Now, I don't look at it every time, but let's say it happens half the time, and relistically I do not ride every single day of year, but at least 300+ miles. That makes it over 900 days, but given I turn off the bike twice a day, at least, and I'm considering that it might happen half the time, I leave it at the approximate miles I have lost in the 38 months of ownership is about 900 miles. Of the 10 times I've noticed, when it has lost the miles, it always takes a full mile to make up. So, let's say when I rolled in, it was well into the 86,500 miles, maybe 5/10ths, but when I started up again it was 86,499 and I had to go a full mile to click, that would have been a mile and half. So I'll stay with the possiblity I have 900 miles lost to the the digital age, bringing my current roll to around 87,400 miles or so, but, indeed who's counting.

I would like to know if yours does this though. It may be a prevalent issue that needs to be brought to Victory's attention. But what did we do before we had even speedometers on motorcycles?

I'm riding tomorrow. Foxy Co-Pilot had her impacted wisdom teeth pulled today - so I shall be riding solo (sniff..) BUT ! I shall be riding is the good news. Bad news is - I am never going to catch up to the Cap'n unless my odometer starts to work exactly opposite his (adds mileage instead).
I shall watch for that phenomenon to occur !
Better yet - maybe my AGEOMETER will click over to 65 next birthday ! I like that idea !

never seen it happen, but never paid attention to it, either. If it would subtract a few miles, I'd have me a collector bike with low miles, in like 50 years.

Po, with 43,000+ miles on it your bike will never be considered low miles.  Even if you parked it 45 years you'd have nearly 35,000 more than this Harley:

personally, I don't like the malfunction, because one, I'm never "selling" the bike, I'll wear out first. I don't like the SWAG factor in this, but 900 approximate miles is a significant amount, but not so much so in the 1000s of miles. Some have stated that I've got some goal to shoot for, but to the contrary, no goal whatsoever, I just love to ride, period. A mile is a smile as I find no more than a moments pleasure in looking at the bike, and that is usually walking up to it to ride away. I don't look for excuses to ride either, I ride my bike no more than if this was cage miles with the exception of mini-vacations with the wife or to go visit family more often. I feel sorry for folks that buy a bike just to show as they are really missing the essence of the machine.

Mine does the same thing. Had never paid attention to my odometer until I put the bike away for the first winter. Looked at the mileage for the first year of riding the bike. Then in the spring when I looked I had 1 less mile on it. Noticed it a few times over last year. Never going to sell the bike so don't let it bother me.

In deed, but if the roads are clear, ride. When I first started riding I thought it was a cardinal sin to ride in the rain or cold. I noticed others that ride in the rain and I said, why not me? Then I was looking for some cold weather info and came across some dude that road year 'round, IN THE SNOW, and he lives up north somewhere. He says as long as you have wind protection, know your limitations of riding and how to handle the icy spots, it doesn't matter how cold it is. Wow! This was a few years ago and I think it was found when I did a search for "winter motorcycle riding"

Okay #57, I'm waiting now to hear some Maine riding experiences and see some thermometer pictures with you by your bike. lOl )

Given that my mileage computer has been off from 7 to 10 MPG since my 2008 was new (Victory just says this is normal!), I think being one mile off on the odometer is probably considered perfection by Victory!

Wonder why a bike with that low mileage had to be rebuilt, engine and transmission. Putting an electric start on a 61 HD is lame.
Oh thats right....It 's a Harley, wrenching is part of the experience.
When (if) he sells it, he will tell everyone how he got more for it than he paid for it but he will fail to mention the thousands of dollars in "upgrades" and rebuilds.

I work with a guy that has a old harley, 60 something, who likes the hobby of keeping it running. He is constantly having to hunt down a part or do something make shift. He hardley ever rides because it doesn't run all the time, and currently he's waiting for a part that he hopes to get by spring.

He loves it and has rode it around the world in different countries he's lived, so it has memories also.

I also have a few Shovelheads, and yes it can be rewarding keeping them going, but I sure do like to walk out in the AM and just press the button, gear up and head off to anywhere I wanna go without the worry.
Does your friend have the HD attitude, or is he a level headed guy? Lotsa people talk about being bikers, but spend more time on a bar stool than in the saddle.

I have had alot of newer bikes come and go, but I doubt I will ever get rid of my first Shovel. I think I have a fondness for my Vision that I haven't had in any of the other newer bikes. She just might be a keeper, only time will tell.

I dunno about my speedo..but I DO know that if I shut the bike off and I'm on, say, the Avg. Mileage, it'll be on total mileage or instant or something else when I restart. I also suspect the trip 2 miles have been restarted when the bike sits for any length of time, like two weeks or so.

Also, the gear indicator seems just as happy to display "2" as "1" even though it's in first, and doesn't snap to "N" even when in neutral all the time. It does frequently work like it's supposed to, just not all the time.

I've read about these glitches elsewhere in the Forum, and as long as they don't affect the rideability of the thing, I'll leave it be, since my dealer out here is a nice guy, but I suspect he won't be on "Jeopardy!" anytime soon.

@rwilly - he seems to be the genuine article, he's shared some serious ride exploits and has a love for the motor company. He never talks condescending and loves to talk riding and working on his bike. The funny thing is is he does get frustrated in trying to get parts, but the sentimental value has a hold on him.

Right on, Sounds like a good guy.
I love to talk with people about different makes of bikes, rides they been on, things of that nature, but I really can't stand to be around the snobs that just don't get what it's all about. I'm not referring to any one brand either.
Anywho, I better let this thread get back on topic.

I had a feeling within the first couple of posts the Cap'n made but when his profile had the name Allen it just made me go "Huh.".  He's our own Jason Bourne.  He has traded the Bentley for the Nautilus.

I'm curious overall how Victory would feel about this and sent my odometer pictures to Region 2000 in Lynchburg, my closest dealer, to check into this. If it is the same vendor, most likely this affects all year models, then again, it may just be mine.

Maybe you don't feel it is significant, but the odometer should remain a reasonable level of accuracy and having it roll back automatically at an unknown degree could mean something else is affected. It is not the matter of the miles lost, but the fact it does it at all means their is a defect that needs correcting in mind.

I think it is just some sort of computerized averaging, rounding up or rounding down going on.
The USA government is pretty strict about the odometer being correct, not so much about the speedometer.

Saying that, my speedo (2011 Vision) is pretty much spot on!

Some more follow up on this issue. It is happening as frequently as I suspected. The odometer will roll back when I shut the bike off, twice today, I watched it when I turned off the ignition switch and the odometer would momentarily display, it would go back one mile.

my response from the dealer on this issue. Doesn't make sense:

Called Polaris and they said the speedo records in whole miles only, if the reading at time of shutdown is not a full mile it drops back to the last mile recorded. thanks mike.

Question for you: Do you care that the odometer doesn't read the correct mileage???

My Odometer clicks off miles unevenly? At 65mph it akes anywhere from 25 to 55 seconds to run a mile? So I feel I am getting jipped on my miles and not to happy bout it honestly.
