Posts: 13 Reno, NV | Hey Folks,
Just got back from my 3000 mile trip through yellowstone and beyond. Was an amazing experience with the folks.
I have a (currently unfinished) blog that I am planning on finishing today or tomorrow with some photos, if you're interested in reading it you can find it at rerobinson.blogspot.com
Now my problem.
About half way through the trip I ended up with a belt whine. Brought the vision into the local dealer in Boise, ID and they told me the pulley was out of round.
Had the pulley/belt replaced along with the 5k service when I got into Las Vegas and it fixed the belt chirp/whine, no big deal, under warranty painless.
Then half way along the route back to Reno noticed I have some pretty loud howl. Symptoms are as follows.
1st gear and second gear - Winding down on speed under compression, bike makes cyclic sound, part howl, almost a grind sounds like "ggggyooooonnngg....gggggyyyyyonngggg"
3rd gear - No new noticable sounds
4th gear - Sound picks up again under throttle and acceleration.'
5th gear - Perfect...silent
6th gear - Sound picks up again...This time quieter, more high pitched but faster.
This is a lower pitched sound than the belt chirp/whine. The bike has always been loud when winding down in first and second, which doesn't bother me. I know these V-twins make some strange noises and I'm okay with it, I just want to make sure nothing is damaged. No noticable changes in bike's power or performance.
Has anyone else experienced these sorts of noises? Is this typical for new belt break in? Any suggestions? Do I need to get it into a tech right away?
Thanks,
Ryan | |

Very much like what you describe and seems to be changing as the bike gets broken in.
Tech told me the tranny is big and clunky on these bikes and it's to be expected.
Bike runs great! | |
