when in 4th gear, not pulling hard, the top end of my vision 106 (stock except stage one pipes) sounds like its coming apart. sounds like things are not ok in 106 land. then up into 5 and wow just pure v twin heaven. wth?

Pretty much normal. The more miles on the bike 4th will quite down. Also, you can read some of the oil threads and there are comments in them that certain oils will quite the tranny some. If you short shift out of 4th to 5th you will get away from it more. With all the torque, the 106 can handle 5th down to about 1800 rpm, unless your going up hill or heavy loaded.

not quite an answer that makes me happy. the other motorcycle company uses that a lot too. normal, they all do that etc. i was wondering if cams maybe or some time on a dyno or something would make it a usable gear instead of just shifting around it which is what i am doing. i do not think the noise is in the tranny at all. i could be wrong for sure but definetly sounds like coming off the top end.....

Any chance the fuel is of poor quality? Try a different brand and octane rating. Might also change the spark plugs.

If the noise is silent in 5th gear then the noise you speak of is the straight spline gears of four gear. You can hear it louder then than other bikes because.....your ears are in a calm pocket of air and the noise is channeled up the handle bar area.

I have not seen any posts on Vision Riders that the transmission is failing. Not one in all of the 1000's of posts from the many owners.

Enjoy your vision. Turn up the radio.

I doubt it's the top end. Why would it only make noise in a certain gear? If it is so bad that you have to skip over that gear, then there is a serious problem in the transmission.

...4th is a little loud, and depends on what you are comparing it too. Most likely this is "normal" and you're not used to it. The straight cut will quiet down after break-in around 15,000 miles. Until then, go out and ride it until you just don't care about the sound and enjoy riding.

The one thing that helped in breaking-in my bike and reducing the gear noise is one ride in particular that the wife and I took that we were up and down the mountains (big hills) hear in PA. I think it was the decel in various gears that calmed alot of the noise down. That one ride around 3200 miles made a big difference.

If I took my wife up in the mountains on the Vision, things would get louder, but it wouldn't be the bike. And the noise wouldn't subside until we were back on the straight and level.

If you don't like noise maybe - just maybe you should be riding in a car.

Noise - Wind, Radio, Pipes, the pulsing of a v-twin and trany...

I guess you could get a Goldwing with one of those really big ass windshield so you don't get wet either....

Just sayin...

Just took mine on it's maiden voyage through the mountains after break in. I noticed the same thing, weird noises in certain gears but 5th and 6th sounded ok.

since all this talk about gear noise i have been doing little tests. like riding in 4th then going to 5th and then back to 4th.. 4th surely have a noise unlike the other gears. NOT that it means there is anything wrong with it. its just noiser. but like i said before im not in 4th that long. and 99% of the time i have the radio on anyways.

What? Why would you trade a high quality motorcycle for a low quality car?

Earlier this year when my wife and I went on a short ride, I thought something was seriously wrong when decelerating down a hill. We finished our ride, and I continued to ride the heck out of my VV for the next few months without her, trying to break it or fix it, either one would have done fine. We just got back from the mountains after a nice Sunday ride and I noticed it now sounds much quieter than it did before, even with the two of us on it. I guess it is broken in now, with around 16,000 miles on the clock. BTW, I use Amsoil too!!

Definitely normal transmission noise in fourth gear I would have to say. I live in a semi-rural area and this year there is a ton of road construction so it seems like I am always riding around 35 to 45 mph and in fourth gear, I have to say that the noise that has been normal in fourth gear has subdued with extensive use and as such it is simply a break in issue.

Just noticed the tranny whine for the first time today on my way to work. Radio off for the first time since ownership as it is now broke (different thread). Reminds me of the old Muncie rockcrusher, an aptly named gearbox from my 60's muscle car days. We thought it was cool then to downshift and make all the dogs in the neighborhood howl. BTW the muncie was regarded as the most robust manual transmission on the planet.

i like noise just fine web hair.... i dont like rattling, chunky, metal clanking shit though. and i did a mod to my pipes this past week and wow. tunes out the 4th gear blues.

stay tuned i will write a thread on how i modified my exhaust, a litttle louder, and deeper, and not too loud unless i want it too be....

i have about 8000 on now and the noise is receding. i also did an exhaust mod that i am very happy with. that helps too.
