Has anybody used the hotel discounts provided by VRA? Are they decent discounts and are there any problems getting them?

I wish I could say so, but when traveling I always ask for any kind of discount and I usually get one just for the asking. I don't know what they apply it under, but they give me the lowest they say they can give with any discount. I guess I look like someone they feel sorry for.

Being a member of the VMC I have used the discount that you get with Choice Hotels (Comfort Inn etc.).
The 15% discount that you receive is better than most.

I ask for a military discount and they give it to me. I never think to ask what the price is first. I find the old motels have the best rates. If in doubt ask to see the room first. I stopped at an old motel in CO once and wanted a non-smoking room. She said she only had 1 room left and it was smoking. She handed me the key and told me to check it out first. All I could smell was the bleach. The room looked like it dropped out of the 1950s and super clean. Great price and a good nites sleep.
I have learned to ask for a room away from the maintenance room and the ice machine. Damn ice machine goes all night long. First part people are getting ice and slamming the door and the rest of the night the thing is dropping fresh ice.
Also if it's raining ask if you can park under the carport and most places say sure.
