What has to come off in order to install/replace the front speakers on the vision?

You will need to take off the instrument bezel, speaker grill and the mirrors. To remove the mirrors you will need to take off the aluminium windshield access panel. It sounds like a lot but it actually goes pretty smoothly. The hardest part was the mirrors. The screws were still pretty accessible.

Hope that helps. If you send me your email I can send you a 2008 service manual. Pages 98-100 and page 103 has instructions for removal.

Jeff, let us know how this goes and which speakers you are installing. I am thinking about an upgrade myself.

Plus, when you put the mirrors back in, there are little tabs/slots that go together.  You can miss these and the mirrors will still go in, but they will vibrate like crazy after you have everything all buttoned up.  Not that I've done that or anything.....

I'm leaning toward the polk db4521 speakers. They are slightly more efficient than the stock (93db spl vs 92db spl) but need to see if there's enough space for the tweeter which sits proud of the woofer by about 3/8". (see a representative photo on another thread).

Thanks Guys. It look like there's just enough room behind the grill for the raised tweeter.

Word from the dealer is that the speaker won't fit, not because of the tweeter sticking out but because the speaker is too deep to fit in the plastic enclosures the speaker sit in. Jury is still out on this though.
Those of you that have installed Polks, how'd you, make them fit?

I will stop by and speak with Jr Thursday morning about the problem. Austin said he could probably make them fit but he didn't want to do any cutting without some one else making that decision.
I spoke with Austin today about a couple of things I noticed. I thought your right heat shield rattled a bit, it was actually a piece by the belt. He went over and rattled it when I told him about the noise. He will tighten it up.
I also was not impressed with your front brakes, did you adjust the brake lever at all?

Jeff,

victoryvisiontour changed out the enclosures with ones from Crutchfield.  Very informative thread here for what you are trying to do:

Rick - Thanks for talking with Austin. I had noticed the rattle but wasn't sure where it was coming from.
Have not adjusted the brakes at all.

All was good for me too . . . easy install EXCEPT . . . I removed the passenger seatback to get better access to rear speakers shrouds . . . couple of bolts, no biggie. Went to reinstall and the barrel nuts mounted into the seat back "pushed in" and my bolts couldn't catch the threads. I was forced to remove staples on seat back, peel back vinyl, and "glue" these barrel nuts back into the slots . . . it's always something. BTW, the J&M's sound great!

sorry for the delayed response. i missed this one. i put in the j & m speakers and they sound great. it took me about an hour to install both. a couple of the screws in the front are a pain to put back in but just take your time. the oem speakers have no base and are tinny. these speakers are only $80 per pair and have a great sound.
