Memphis | While riding with VisionTex this week, we discussed fuel pumps. He had his ('08) replaced several thousand miles ago and I asked him what the symptoms were. He said it had a loud screech (like strangling a chicken) when first turning the key. We went out to the bikes and compared sounds. He energized his first to show what it should sound like. Very soft, high pitched whine. We lit off mine (also and '08) and it was the screeching chicken in comparison. He had his replaced under the extended warranty and suggested I see my dealer. On the way back from AR, I went straight to the dealer and asked him to grab a key to a demo Vision. We went outside and did the demo bike first - soft whine. He walked over to my bike and leaned over to listen for the whine and turned the key. The screech made him stand straight up. "Yeah, that's definitely not right." I will getting it changed out in July just prior to the AVR when I bring it in for new tires and other stuff. He feels like ethanol is wreaking havoc on the fuel systems. It doesn't need air to cause corrosion. He walked over to a display of additive that they just got in that counteracts the effects of ethanol in the gas. He handed me a bottle (treats 48 gallons) and asked me to be the guinea pig and run it through my bike to see if I can tell a difference. The squeal came on very gradually over time and I had just gotten used to it and thought it was normal. If you think yours has gotten louder over time, go to your dealer and compare. You may get a new one and save yourself a "flame out" story. |

New Bohemia, VA | hmmmm.... Screeching chicken eh? I'm going check that out but you may something. Don't notice much noise now but didn't give it thought either...
Still in the edit mode SF, yes, there is a distinct difference. It's amazing I thought that racket was "normal"
much quieter, and no screech with the new pump. So there is a symptom to flame out, screech, whine, what you call it, mine did it for months before it finally give out while HOTT heading out in the middle of interstate traffic... 67,000 on the clock when it went.

Memphis | 40,000. VisionTex has 47K on his and changed it out at around 40K also. VaRyder - You can easily hear mine prime up from over 10 feet away.

Southeast Iowa | I stay away from ethanol whenever possible. You pay a little less but you loose more in mileage than what you save per gallon. Premium Unleaded whenever possible for me. I hate that some states mandate ethanol (Minnesota for example) where everything is at least 10% ethanol. |

Oddly enough, us Iowans had the sense to vote against the ethanol requirment (thankfully). So roughtly 75% of all Iowa fuel stations have straight unleaded fuel AND ethanol choices. There are a few stattions that only offer ethanol in all grades, so just pass them up and head to the next one that offers you the choice. All years, stock compression, Vics run best on 87 here in Iowa, no need to waste money with 92 octane. |

Southeast Iowa | SongFan - You can get regular unleaded at most gas stations. Stay away from Wal-Mart gas and most Caseys stores. BP, Texco, Sinclair and the rest of the major players in Iowa all offer 91-93 octane with 0 ethanol. |

"He feels like ethanol is wreaking havoc on the fuel systems." Instead of getting in a panic why not wait out what the problem is? Pete went through 7 fuel pumps on his '99. So are you saying everyone should have stopped using ethanol 10 years ago? 56,000 on my '99 and only the fuel pump recall done. I thought the pump was going once but it turned out to be the filter. I have no faith in ...feels like.... feels like $hit? This is like don't use Amsoil cause my customer said they used it and now they had to replace their clutch. WAY too many overlooked factors in both cases. |

Memphis | My dealer also sells Triumphs. Triumph came out with a maintenance bulletin for dealers to pull the fuel pumps off of certain models and spin the impellers if they have sat on the showroom floor for a certain amount of time. Gas with ethanol has almost no stabilizers in it compared to non-ethanol and the high oxygen content of the ethanol promotes corrosion (even though the alcohol acts as a cleaner). It goes bad very quickly. If your bike sat all winter with a tank full of E10 (10% ethanol) in it, especially 87 octane, it may be a rough start to your riding season. The solvent nature of the ethanol will flush a bunch of crap into the fuel filter and lines. Lawnmowers, ATV's, outboard boat motors and motorcycle motors are the last to be "modernized" to deal with ethanol. Just do some research if you have always used a certain fuel additive in your motors before. E10 is a game changer. |

Boydsville, AR United States | They are working to make it manditory to have 15 % corn here. I hope we have a vote in it. I know my pickup does a lot worse in mileage using the 10% mix and it is not cheeper. 10% same price as straight gas, or sometimes more because of the octane. |
