Posts: 575 Spirit Lake IA "Birthplace of Victory Motorcycles" | Went to my dealer to have my XM installed. I had reviewed the install instructions and it seemed pretty straight forward. Wanted to support the dealership however, so I rode 1.5 hrs to have them install (nice day BTW). Owner told me to show up at noon for a 3 hr install.
I get out there at 11 am (closes at 3pm) and the owner is out and the mechanic says "I really wish you would have come at 9am . . . this will take 4-5 hours to install . . . don't ever let the owner book your service since he dosn't know how long things take!" The shop is otherwise dead with no other service being done. I leave next week for a road trip to Colorado, so I really couldn't wait to make a return trip. I decided to get the parts and take it home to do the install myself. Before leaving, I asked the mechanic if the radio needed to be re-flashed to the most recent software. He said he looked and did not see an update for a 2009 Vision. "It will work" he said as I left with my parts.
I decided to dry fit everything together to make sure I got signal before running the harness. I have harness connected to head unit, XM module connected to harness, and antenna connected to XM box. I am outside with clear access to sky. I turned everything on, I couldn't get it to "find XM" as I cycled it through AM, FM, iPod etc. It is like the head unit is not sensing the XM module. I also tried disconnecting the battery to see if that would reset. No luck. Instructions made it sound like it was plug and play to get to activation station. I have read where people have said they have installed without a reflash. Few questions:
- Is there a reset I need to do for the radio to get it to recognize XM?
- What are the chances cable or XM module are "bad" . . . I'd hate to get it all strapped in only to have to remove it
- Any other tips or tricks?
- Any way to tell what my version of radio software and understand if it is the latest?
Any help would be appreciated. |

Posts: 575 Spirit Lake IA "Birthplace of Victory Motorcycles" | Saga continues. I called dealer and while they were looking into it, I also called RadioSound, the OEM manufacturer for stereo AND XM unit. The most recent version is 5.21A . . . turns out both radio and XM unit need to be reflashed. Soooooo, another 1.5 hr drive to dealer. They reflashed it and when I asked if XM was working the mechanic said "Yup, it playing AC/DC." What he was listening to was my iPod!!! He just heard music and assumed it was working. Lucky for me I toggled the selector button and was able to get the Preview XM channel. After 3 tries at activation, it is now working! Should'nt be this difficult to spend my hard earned money to get upgrades on this bike. I told mechanic about the sites as it seemed I had better info than he did on this bike. He told me that I couldn't trust everything I read on-line . . . he is correct, but I'm sure the average reader on this site is more up-to-date than the mechanic that was working on my bike today. |

Posts: 156 dinwiddie, va | wow. that wanna be mechanic is an idiot. It only takes about an hour to install an xm system. If he works with the dealers digital wrench and especially with the visions, he would know that there is alot of new updates for audio software. Next time anyone goes to the deler for a service I would have them at least check for updated software for your bikes |
