J&M Corporation manufactures headsets and communications packages for motorcycles.  I have been talking with the company president, John Lazzeroni, about the possibility of J&M developing a bluetooth cellphone integration kit for the Victory Vision.  This would be an addition to the communication harness and would allow the rider to use his cellphone while riding (no comments about safety, please - you all know that sometimes it would be good to use the cellphone while riding, especially when you want to call 911 about the jerk who is playing tag with your back tire).  He said he is looking at developing this, but that there was not yet enough interest in it by Vision owners.

So, to see if there is enough interest out there for this, how about responding to this poll to see how you feel about it?  I don't know how much the kit would cost.

What say ye, fellow Vision pilots?

Probably would have been interested before I got the Scala Teamset comm. units. It allows a Bluetooth synch to my cell phone.

Bluetooth is IMHO is the least reliable technology that I have to deal with, and the only practical use for my i-phone at highway speed is as a missile.

The i-phone is a decent PDA, great for email, a good pager/text messenger, and it is without question the worst phone I've ever owned. It takes a minimum of 3 selections/screen changes before you can dial a number and often because there are no keys to feel you dial incorrectly all of which makes you take your eyes off the road.

The thought of trying to make it function (which cant be done with gloves on) while (unreliably) synced to bluetooth on a motorcycle makes me wonder what my life expectancy would be the first time the phone rang.

As to calling 911 while dealing with an aggressive driver; how exactly does one access a phone while riding to avoid getting splatted?

Now, if you could give me a simple text message that displays on my Vision Radio console for real emergencies like "Milk & EGGs" or "CALL HOME NOW!" I might be more interested but the phone, it's staying on the belt or in the trunk where it belongs until the next gas stop.

I was mostly thinking about phones that have voice activation - "Call home", "Call 911", "Call wife", etc.  Phone could also be programmed to answer automatically - you could then say, "Yes dear", "Sorry, I'll have to call you back", etc.

Thanks for driving this Long Ranger! I have talked to John Lazzeroni about this also several times. I am also a long time customer of J&M and use a lot of his products. If we can get enough people to show an interest I think he will develop a solution. I will do everything I can to support this initiative.

What John needs to develop for the Vision the same solution he has for the Gold Wing and Harley. This would include a Bluetooth dongle that integrated with the Vision sound system to allow integration with other Bluetooth devices such as the Garmin GPS and phones as well as Bluetooth helmet systems. Several Vision riders I ride with also want this functionality.

I have tried the Scala solution and while it works pretty well it doesn’t integrate with the Vision sound system, CB or XM radio. The Bluetooth integration on the Scala works really well especially in linking to the Garmin Zumo 550 and having the phone linked to the Zumo. This way you can use the screen on the Zumo to send and receive calls on the phone and it works well even with gloves on. I was amazed at how well the phone worked in both sending and receiving calls and how clear the sound was for me and the person I was talking to.

I have to say my TomTom Rider allows me to already connect to my cell via bluetooth technology and I have a speaker and mic in my lid that allows me to do so. With that said I NEVER cnnect my phone using this feature when on the road and cannot think of a single instance in which I would want to do so. I figure if I need to dial 911 it is easy enough to pull off and do so. As far as the example provided for needing to? Well thats one morereason to get out or rather off the road instead of dialing 911.
Maybe I'm missing something here that would make phone use while riding beneficial?

I do have to agree with every assessment here about the need or use of a cell while riding. Is it a safety thing? Well, if its that bad, I am pulling over. So, no, I would say it is not a safety thing. Is it convenient? Hell yeah! Too many times I have been trying to meet up with the S.O. only to find out she hadn't left the house yet OR I was running late and wanted to let her know. I HAVE had the occasion to drive completely the wrong way only to have to stop, call and then ride on thereby wasting precious minutes (yeah...I know...stupid that I would be worried about 5 minutes...but it happens).
So, for me, it is convenient AT TIMES. Would I want it for anything other than a convenience? No! Fact is, I hate using my phone as much as I hate the rain while riding. But there are times you just have to deal with it and this would make it easier.
Strictly convenient during those drastically inconvenient (I need to make a call and don't have time to stop) times.

I've full bluetooth integration on my Vision Tour. I've the Nolan N102 helmet with bluetooth comms, the Garmin 2820 and the iPhone 3g connected to the Vision sound system. The Garmin works flawlessly with the helmet and iPhone. When I receive a phone call, it's routed to the Garmin, the display changes with prompts to answer/ignore the call and it's routed to the headset. Music simulaneously goes on mute. Outbound calls handle either by diplay on 2820 or by pushing the button on my helmet. Fidelity of the boom mike seems to be ok, even at freeway speeds, as callers can hear me and I, them. Safety isn't too much of an issue, in that it's hands-free, but even then, I have to exercise more caution, simply because the phone call can be a distraction.

Plus, prompts from the Garmin navigation are piped into the headset as well.

Vince.

Full integration to me would have to be FULL integration. I have been looking for such a thing, but I realize that it is a pipe dream.

Radio/mp3 - pipe to speakers or to bluetooth
GPS - pipe to speakers or to bluetooth
CB - output to speakers or to headset, input from headset, PTT switch for the handlebar
Cell phone - calls interrupt music
Ability to plug in alternate trancievers like FRS or HAM, with functionality similar to the CB. Failing that, perhaps an FRS pluggable module to the stereo, using the CB antenna or a separate antenna that can be unobtrusively mounted somewhere.
Share music with pillion and still have bluetooth intercom with them.

This is all do-able, but no one has designed it yet... not even a substantial portion of it. Even the Autocomms seem to fall short with a bunch of patchwork that will eventually be separate from the stereo. I'm sure the price would be high... as in a couple grand. What's more, J&M have a history of using a proprietary bluetooth stack, which means I have to spend even more money on a new helmet module. Those with Nolans or other factory bluetooth sets are similarly out of luck.

I see this as technically easy, but I'll bet none of us will want to pony up for the final bill. The toughest part would be finding a clean way to balance all the volume levels. It might be easier to design and sell a complete replacement of the stereo instead of plugging into what is a rather crappy radio to begin with.

If J&M comes up with anything over half my dream functionality for anything less than $1200, I'm in. I'll consider higher if more of the goals are achieved.

I have used my cell phone a couple of times with my Scala Rider Teamset. Its not so much the talking, but the voice command functions (calling and/or answering the phone) on these types of bluetooth devices seem to rarely work well (at least for me), and making and/or receiving a call can be very distracting. So for me, I just don't use my cell phone while I am riding. But then one of the reasons I ride is to get away from everything and enjoy the ride, not talk on the phone. Like someone else said, if I really need to use the phone, I will pull over. But then that's just my opinion.

So no, I would not add bluetooth cell capability to my Vision.

I would be interested in it, but not for me. My wife goes with me on nearly every ride and we still have teenage kids at home. She worry's about leaving them home and having a phone that would ring in on the intercom where she could pick up and talk while riding as a passenger would be the ticket.

I am a geek and love technology, but my one of my favorite things about a motorcycle is that no one expects you to answer the phone. Even my boss knows not to waste her time calling me when i am out riding. (too bad she hasn't adopted this when i am in my cage.) IMHO, there are enough idiots out there we have to watch continously for, I think trying to carry on a conversation would reduce my vigilance and ultimately safety.

I ride to get away from people/ phones. If they want to talk to me, they leave a message. If someone is that close on my rear tire, it would be hard to hold a phone in a hand that is occupied by a finger/pistol. And they would have to work hard on getting me that pissed off. ET
