Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | I've really never followed motorcycles, harley, or otherwise. Always wanted to ride as I did in the '80's and always liked the looks of the Indian, but could only afford the cheaper yet ready for prime time Goldwing, at least one a few years old. So, the point is places like daytona, myrtle beach, sturgis are just names where bikers go hang out. Apparently Carlise, Pa is a big Harley region because of the plant. Well, that explains it when I went to carlise to see a friend and rode my Vision up there. I passed a lot of harleys and they passed me as I was tooling into the area. I stopped to get gas and there were at least two or three harleys there and they left and more pulled in. None of them even wanted to acknowledge I was even around. Personally, I didn't think nothing of it and could care less anyways, but this article helped explain the attitude, I was encroaching on their territory. Well, excuse me.... an article on the possible plant closing... http://www.cumberlink.com/articles/2009/09/13/news/local/doc4aadaa5f4385d561094139.txt |

Posts: 74 Lehigh Valley, Pa | I got a good chuckle out of this, you are right opinions and some times attitudes run pretty deep in central Pa. I do a good bit of riding in that neck of the woods and experience the same ignorance.
You want to see something funny, visit the HD plant in York on your Vision like I did, we went for the tour. When we parked the bike it was in a sea of HD's, when we came out you would have thought the bike had a disease. There wasn't a bike within a 100' of the vision. Was good for a laugh. By the way the factory tour is worth the time and the museum is great. |

I sometimes get this, too. They might try to diassociate from a non-lemming; but if you look at them, they are all looking at the Vision from their "safe" distance, leaning towards each other to make surreptitios comments...
"It got two wheels, I think, but it ain't no hawley"
"He done customized his hawg so much it don' look like a hawg no mo' "
"poser"
"shure, its nice, but it ain't a hawley"
okay... those were made up (sort of)
This one I actually heard at last year's Ray Price rally in Raleigh... it was so funny it is engraved in my brain:
"I wish the people who ride dem riceburners would buy American for once"
bwahahahahahah! |

| I thought it was funny this past weekend I was on a charity poker run. One of the stops was at a harley dealership. My wife and I got off the bike, walked over to get or stamps and walked back to the bike, no wasting time. As we got on the bike about 5 people were standing back looking at us and I heard one say "that's the new Victory". |

Posts: 732 Western WA | I went on several rides with a HOG chapter in Spokane over the summer. We were the lone Vision in a sea of 70 or more Harleys. They welcomed us with open arms into their group. Sure, there was some friendly joshing in the beginning - from both sides - but after a few miles it didn't seem to matter what we rode. Several in the group were very interested in the Vision.
I think the only thing that frosted them was when we would stop for lunch and people would flock to the Vic. Well, that and we took $75 from the chapter in a 50/50 drawing.

Next time that question is put to you just say they stopped making that model after the first year, it was too fast for most riders, because it was Super...SSG. |

Posts: 160 Lennox, SD | This is the same thing I encountered.
I have not purchased a Vision yet I have my 2006 Kawi Nomad at my Victory dealer and it is for sale.
I rode the Kawi's because they were not Harley Davidson!
Because it is late in the season they are not interested in a trade, I can uderstand that and I have the Nomad priced to sell quickly.
Everyone of my Harley riding friends have told me that I needed to get a Harley because I need to quit wating time on the imitations.
To that I say F*** you! I ride Kawi's because I didn't want a HD. I have followed the Vision since it's release and I feel Victory is making a "rider's machine" and not an "image". Who gives a red rat's ass about an image. . . .
I will ride my Vision, (when I get it) and laugh at the posers. You can always spot a Harley drone because they start buying all the clothing and the motorcycle comes next.
The Victory Vision has been my choice since I saw the video of the Vision and the competition "drop test". . . LOL I love the way the others falll and roll. |

Tell you what... you show me a red rat and I'll show you its ass.
Only slightly more seriously, try to remeber the Andre Agassi ads for the Canon Rebel series of cameras. "Image is everything".

I don't normally spend a lot of time crying about the decline of western society; but when brand associations become so strong that people cant see past the brand to common ground (like a love of motorcycles) its not a very big leap to the place where kids kill each other for a pair of basketball shoes or a team logo jacket.
In the old days companies used to GIVE AWAY branded merchandize because it was considered ADVERTISING. Now people pay huge amounts of money for the privilege of becoming mobile billboards.
If an individuals self worth is determined by a spurious association with a specific "brand" isn't that a form of identity theft?.
If "image is everything" then logically "substance is nothing"! All I can say is we have become our own worst enemy.

Web - I hate to be the bearer of this news...but Arlen did NOT design the Vision. I talked with him directly and point blank asked him how much input and/or design he was allowed on the Vision. He said that he and Cory were invited to view the designs and concepts and provide INPUT but didn't do much more than that.
He was very gracious to give the credit to the engineers at Victory.
Not a dig...just want to be sure the facts are correct! |

I hate to agree with you because it IS sad. But I DO agree with you!
My GF's son is 16 and is always buying the latest and greatest Fox, Nike or whatever gear is the fancy for the week. This week I think it is Monster (the drinks). A new jacket came out and it was 95 bucks. He HAD to have it and asked me to buy it. I told him point blank, "that jacket has as much functionality as a wind breaker. I will buy you a warm jacket for the winter and you can figure out how to buy that one on your own." Two days later, he walked in with his new Monster jacket. I asked him when he wanted to go look for another "winter" coat. He said, "no thanks, this will work". I thought to myself...he will have to wear 14 Monster shirts in order to have enough layers to make it through winter. But, I guess, to each his own and this case, to his credit, I didn't have to spent money on a jacket for him.
Now, the question is, when will he complain about the cold? I have my guess that it will be sometime in late October. Anyone for a pool? LMAO! Buck a square? Bwaahaaahaaa! |

Ah, young grasshopper... you are so close and yet so near.
Your syllogism assumes the mutual exclusivity of image and substance. Should one assimilate that image is a subset of substance, one will see that substance is ALSO everything.
--------------
All horsing around aside, I have to agree that we are quickly abandoning the founding principle of this being a nation of rugged individuals and becoming a nation of various associations and brandings. How many fallacious hyphen-americans can we become? Why not just plain Americans? Oh, because you don't want to learn the language? That's okay, then.
How else could we purportedly fall for and thus vote for some blythe bumper sticker crap like "change we can believe in"?!? Well, we got the change. I hope the 45% of the electorate (plus the 7% of phony votes) like what they bought. I sure don't.
That's why I called those who fall into a group just to be part of a group "lemmings" earlier. Critical thinkers will be unable to distinguish "lemming" from "the in crowd"... which may be why I was not terribly popular in school. |
