Posts: 1484 LaPorte,Tx. | I have been using only these two oil filters for a long time. I've also often wondered who made the Polaris/Victory filter part number 25400086 for our Visions. So on last Friday I think I found out. A Wix 51356 was disected in my garage along side a Polaris/Victory filter. Every part is the same, except for the color of the bleed down valve. On the Wix the color is red, the P/V filter it is black. All the number stampings are the same. Infact the serial numbering on the cans match up all ending in E1.
But there is a difference. I have gone to the point of pulling off a perfectly good filter and putting on the other to prove there is a difference. This difference is in the shifting of the bike. The Wix filter shows the relief valve set is 8-11 psi, on a previous post I asked if anyone knew the rv set on the P/V filter, didn't hear anything. Does anyone know what it is set at. Just based on feel, both RVs feel the same spring tension wise.
Besides the color of the bleed down valve, the black one seems a little less firm, the elastimer seems a little more pliable.
Without changing oil, just the filters, the P/V filter makes my Vision shift smoother, less clunk, easier to find "N".
So the Wix and P/V filter is the same, almost! |

Posts: 1290 Ruskin, Fl | I used a Napa filter last oil change. My bike it hard to shift now. Coincidence? I don't see how the filter would affect it, but I guess anything is possible. I could just change the filter back to Bosch and see. |

Posts: 88 Billings, MT | I just bought the reusable oil filter from Scott at Conquest Customs during the VMC National meet. The reusable filter now has a FAA approval, means it has to pass more stringent test the normal (means better?!).
I just installed it and have run about 250 miles. I seems to shift and run a few degrees cooler. I saved some oil from the last oil change in a sample jar, i will run this oil about the same as last batch. I was told it will run cleaner, and cooler. When i change next time i will report if i can see a difference/.

Kevin, I agree, but I've done this switch twice the Vision and there is a shift quality change for the better. |

Posts: 79 Memphis,Tn. | I'm familiar with end user serviceable centrifugal oil filters, but not the reusable wire mesh media types. The the FAA approval is a good indicator of product reliability. I am left wondering if Continental and Lycoming (or Victory) will warranty their new/rebuilt engines using one of these oil filters.
Let us know the results if you submit any motor oil samples for analysis.
The shop manual shows one oil pump with two sets of internal gerotors, one set lubes the engine (80psi.) and the other is for cooling. (100psi.) There is a separate pressure relief valve located on the oil pump for each system. The relief valve in the oil filter is to bypass the (restrictive) filtering media when the oil is cold and viscous, or if the media itself is clogged or collapsed.
+ 1 here on kevinx's observation. |

Posts: 3773 Pittsburgh, PA | i thought about the reuseable oil filter until i looked into the cleaning of it and the chemicals they wants you to buy to clean it. the price doesnt stop with the oil filter. For me i dont like hassles, so i just unscrew, drop old filter and rescrew a New oil filter with Alot less down time. (cleaning etc) i can have a oil change done in a few minutes. without me hardly getting a drop of oil on me. i like the idea of reusing something but it seems like a hassle. and the savings dont start until after 25k 30k miles. |

Posts: 37 SE Florida | The bypass valve in the filter is only to bypass oil in the case of a severely plugged filter to prevent starving the engine of oil. I don't see how a valve that would remain always closed under normal operation could have any affect on shifting of the transmission on the bike. |

| I did a little experiment with oil filters and KevinX answered my question for me some time back, but for this thread I'll try to recap. Regardless of what oil I use in my Vision with the Victory filter, shifting becomes somewhat notchy at 2100-2300 miles. However if I run the Bosch 3323 filter I do not get notchy shifting as the oil breaks down. So needless to say I run the Bosch filter. Best I can tell the oil drain holes in the Bosch are smaller but greater quantity than the larger but lower number in the Victory filter. Otherwise the filters appear the same. Kevin said it had something to do with filter pressure which made sense to me. So I am a believer that filters will make a difference in shifting.
For the record the Bosch 3323 can be purchased at any autozone for around $6 |

Posts: 293 Arkansas | I think I recall that the Bosch, Mobil1, and the WalMart SuperTech are all made by Champion. All very good according to what I've read, Doesn't have to mean that they are completely identical in spec. though. I can't find any visual difference between the M1 and Supertech other than the color of the nitrile seal. All the stampings/markings are the same except the branding. |
