Victoria, BC | Wife & I are heading from the Westcoast of Canada to Yellowstone National Park (always been a dream of hers). I have never been to that part of the USA, so I could use all the advice my fellow riders can offer me - such as places to stay, things to see & do in Yellowstone & the surrounding area. We have 11 days to play.
At the moment it looks like we'll head from Port Angeles to Seattle, I-90 to Belgrade, Montana & then down 191 to the town of West Yellowstone, where I see there's a Comfort Inn. I figure that to be a two day ride, leaving us 9 days left. What are your thoughts & experiences?

ps. we are leaving at the end of August. Should I have good weather in that region for the first week or so of September?

Memphis | I did a Continental Divide trip a few years ago and was really impressed with the Idaho side of the Tetons, just south of Yellowstone. If you have that long to ride that area and get tired of the touristy stuff, check it out. Everybody else will be on the Wyoming side. http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/2046/stories/68508 Start the day with fresh batteries in the camera and an empty image card. I can't wait to go back on the Vision someday. |

Fargo, ND | I was just thru that area and would suggest not using the south entrance if you have any other options. There is probably 7 - 10 miles of some pretty rough gravel. It was dry when we went thru which was a real plus. The south entrance is certainly passable, but very rough and very dusty & dirty. |

We were just up there stay in Jackson if possible quaint little ski town with a night life. Here is the route we rode while at Victory's Rocky Mountain Freedom Rally...this loop is fantastic! Bring warm clothes ...

So Cal | Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon is Mother natures way of telling us who's really in charge. Dont fool with Mother Nature!

Southeast Iowa | I would definitely ride the "Top of the World" This is a great trip from Red Lodge Montana to to the Chief Joseph Highway. Stay in Cody a day or 2 and check out the dam and lake west of town. It's a nice town with several things to do. Some other highlights are Wind River Canyon, (must do) Flaming Gorge WY-UT border) and Thermopolis WY. Of every thing I listed Yellowstone was my least favorite but my wife really enjoyed it. After a while you can only stand so many hot steaming holes and burping mud puddles. As for Jackson Hole............to busy for me. My wife about got ran into by some bitch eating ice cream, and talking on her cell phone. If I could have got close enough to her I would have left my size 15 boot mark on her shiney BMW. I would motor down the road and stay in Pinedale. Nice town that is easy to get around. |

Pitt Meadows, BC Canada | Done the trip a dozen times by car. And always drooled about what a beautiful bike trip it would be.
Be sure to go to Thermopolis - a volcanic spa town south of Yellowstone - one of my favorite stops. |

Goldsboro, NC | If you are heading to Yellowstone via montana, you are heading stright for Glacier Nat'l Park on the US/Canada border. I've always wanted to run the Going to the Sun Highway on a bike. Maybe you can do it for me?
Glacier would be worth at least one of your admittedly precious 11 days.
The Tetons are nice to look at but you can only approach by road from a distance. I think of the Tetons as a playground for hikers and nonmotorized activities. I have heard that the west side is nicer for touring, but I have not had the pleasure yet so I can not verify. I personally think that glacier and the mountains you will be passing through just to get in from the coast beat the Tetons all hollow.... but that's just an opinion. |

orrick, mo | When you are feed up with traffic head up too Bear Tooth pass. It is beautiful. A couple of good spots to eat are Bubba's BBQ in Cody and Teton steakhouse in Jackson. Makes my mouth water just thinking about either place. If Glacier is possible you don't want to miss that. I enjoyed it more than Yellowstone.Ride safe and take alot of Pics.

Victoria, BC | Thanks Trailbarge - I grew up in Calgary, Alberta, which is due north of Waterton Lakes National Park (which is on the Canadian side of the border from Glacier National Park). Remember being at Waterton at least once when I was younger, so we will probably try to take that area in also. It depends on how long it takes to see the sites in Idaho, Montana or Wyoming, plus whether the weather is being good or bad (praying for good).
Buzz64077 - now you're making my mouth water. Always interested in knowing where the good places are to eat. Anyone else have any good recommendations for good food?
Should I expect a lot traffic in the Yellowstone area at the beginning of September? |

Prince George B.C. Canada | Greetings fellow Canuck. Have done most of the trip you have planned. My suggestion is to ride The Road to the Sun in Glacier drop down into Kalispel, good food and atmosphere at Montana's, then ride I-90 and go into Yellowstone from the north. Exit towards Jackson Hole, make reservations for that town! Then go to a small town in Idaho called Lava Hot Springs and stay at a hotel, I forgot the name, that is built in 1914 or so can't miss it. Period rooms, no phones etc and 'private hot pools' in the basement for you and your significant other. VERY COOL..... then let your nose and the bike take you where ever. Have fun. PS There is also some very cool caves not that far from Lava, they are to the east some. check you're maps....Have a great ride.....Zippadelli |
