I hope things don't happen in threes, but my bike fell over on the right side in very soft soil/grass. The tipovers sunk and the bike was completly over on the rights side. Picked it up. Not a single scratch or mark. How ever ther is no longer a gap between the front of the floorboard and the front tip-over, in fact they now touch. Nothing looks bent or distorted. Anybody know if there is any adjustment where it mounts.

Thanks

ouch CW. I hope I'm not right on this, but my guess is that the TOP is pushed back and the frame is bent at the mount point.

Giving what you described and seeing under the skin, this is a likely culprit, but again, I hope I'm dead wrong. Nothing would look broke as that ABS plastic is very durable as I found out when some one pushed me from behind. It just skuned and marred it some, but absolutely not breaks or cracks.

Mike, take a look at the edge of the leg fairing on the side. Follow it up the headlight and look inside the wind tunnel. Check to see if this piece is bent anywhere or or pulled out of position, especially around the light. If this is the case, you probably bent the lower frame piece where the Tip-over mounts.

If you do suspect that the lower frame bracket is bent, it's not hard to take off the leg fairing so you can get a good look at the bracket. You need a 6mm and 4mm hex wrench, and 13mm and 10mm end wrenches. Taking your time you can probably get the pieces off in 30-45 minutes. If you don't already have a service manual, click here to get a pdf copy of it. There's an easy 9-step process to remove the lower leg fairing.

By the way, if it is the lower frame piece, it's about $330 to get a new one...

Got one here at the shop with the same deal. The tip overs are bolted to what looks like a highway bar behind the body work. the tip over itself bolts to a welded on nub, and it bent that nub.
With the panel off it COULD be bent back; HOWEVER structurally it is now weakened, and may not serve its purpose the next time. I am replacing the whole assy on the bike here.

Amazing that you can drop these things on concrete without a scratch, but a little soggy grass tears it up

it's all in the leverage the way I see it. The structure design would support a substanstial drop directly from the side. In the soggy grass/ground would cause pressure rearward and the TOP acts as a lever as it sinks in, is my guess. Thankfully that is a RU and I hope it doesn't cost much. I'd rather do that than to be totaled from a trash frame.

also, wasn't there some dude that love to show off how you could drop the bike onto the TOPs only to find out after a few times he cracked his block???

keep us posted.

Kevin, what's the cost on the replaceable unit part of the frame?

Thanks, I hadn't considered that the tip-over was bent back. That makes a lot more sense now. If it is it has to be a very small amount. The floorboard does seat flat, just there is no gap anymore. I agree that they are designed to take a drop, not any forward motion, as I learned the hard way when I snapped it off and tore the whole side of the bike up in march.

Part is described as lower front frame, and cost around $330. Labor is gonna be at least 3 hours depending on how CP is scaled

Looks like Rebel and Kevin are right. Finally had a chance to do a close inspection. The lower fairing is pullud away at the top and a good 3/8" around the headlamp. Haven't pulled anything apart yet to see if it's the lower frame or the tipover mount. Amazing what about 10 mph forward motion did. I'll advise if a take a come-a-long to it or replace it after I pull it apart.
