Are you overfilling the engine? Not being rude, but in case you don't know, the level is checked with the bike off the side stand, straight up.
the other causes would be worn rings or valve guides. Was the bike properly broken in? |

Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | Okay, still waiting for Dean say if this a new bike or bought used. I'm going to assume a couple things as he opens up with a guessing game in which he knows the answer. Then he ask if anyone has the same problem. I don't, but maybe some well has.
So the facts as I see it are:
1. Loosing oil at the rate of 3/4 of a quart on a hundred mile poker run.
2. Blows out oil in puffs.
3. He knows the answer
If it was overfull it would do it more constant, wouldn't it? It would also run very hot as the oil would foam from the churning. Also, I think there is a only a few idiots like me that would think you could check the oil while the bike is leaning, I could be wrong. But then again, he might be checking it while running....
So, if I guess right, do I win a prize? Blown rings (maybe from improper break-in???????? [edited because of probie's comment below... no debates please! ] ) my final answer... well maybe...

Posts: 15 Nebraska | Found the problem... (The thing next to the oil filter that has a rubber cover...Oil sensor or sending unit?) was loose. I had some work done at the dealer a couple weekd prior and I'm guessing they did'nt tighten it to spec's and murphy's law kicked in and it managed to loosen itself on the long ride. Good news... it I figured it out and it fixed the problem they checked the motor to make sure there was no damage and all is well.
Bad news the damn thing fell off and they had to get a new one. According to service tech's it won't leak oil when it's not running cause it needs pressure, but it will leak out when riding.

Posts: 354 20 miles west of Chicago. | A search of this site would have turned up leaking oil pressure sensor/sending units on the 08 Vision. Several people, including me, had the problem. The problem was not the unit being "loose" as far as being properly screwed in, but the leak was internal to the unit itself, and the only fix was replacement of the defective unit, not torquing it down. I can't think what kind of work your dealer might have done on your bike that would require loosening the oil pressure sending unit, unless it was on the sending unit itself, but not properly tightening it would be more than enough for me to seek another shop to work on my bike, I would consider that inexcusable negligence. An oil leak there could cause oil to get on the rear tire with possibly bad consequences. |
