Been considering adding a GPS unit. Did some research here on the site trying to figure out which one is the proverbial "best" unit to go with, and I'm confused a bit.

Options available are Garmin 2720 and 2820 and the Zumo 550 and 660 ........correct?

From what I understand the Garmin 2820 is better than the 2720...correct?

But the Zumo 550 is better than the 660 unit????

Is either the 550 or the 660 better than the 2820 unit??

Are there any other units besides these four units? Talking about plug & play units for the Vision.

While I'm a bit tech savvy I will admit that I'm way behind the curve on GPS units. I never even played with one till this past weekend when we borrowed a friends TomTom unit for a car trip to an area I was unfamiliar with. Needless to say...I now want my own.

Never mind price, quickest, best service, where to purchase and such. I'll figure that out once I narrow down my choice.

Lots...
All are good units.

I have a Zumo 550 and will be upgrading to the 660.

The Zumo is more biker friendly as it's waterproof, has the controls on the left clutch side, removable media card, can program gas stops, can be used self powered, etc.

The Zumo also comes with Ram mounts and a car mount so you can switch between the bike and car with ease. Extra power cables included.

Go here to Garmin's site and you can compare the units side by side.

I have the 2720 and am happy with it..obviously if money was no object..I would consider the Zumo 550. The 2720 and 2820 are the only completely plug and play units with the Victory kit. I have seen a thread where people have wired the zumo in. Also, the mount for the Zumo on the console is 149. I paid 110 for my 2720 which is waterproof to IPX7 standard just like zumo..2820 is 210 with xm and mp3 like zumo with no card slot..zumo has internal battery where the 2x20s do not..but bottom line is the more you get the more you pay..

I use the Garmin 2820 and I think it is as good or better than the Zumo. Just to correct a few errors from a previous post -- the 2820 is totally waterproof to 30 ft, it has a great library of point of interest and is very easy to use with gloves on - it is biker friendly.

Yes, the 2820 does not have a battery so you would need to bring the AC adapter if you want to use it in your hotel room (I have never had that particular urge) but it does have some features that that Zumo does not:

· 2820 has more Route option settings and generally more settings available than the Zumo
· 2820 can categorize favorite waypoints into groups, whereas the Zumo only stores them as favorites
· 2820 has a light sensor that automatically dims the display when you go into a tunnel, the Zumo does not
· 2820 has volume settings according to speed of travel (i.e. low, medium, high) the Zumo does not
· 2820 can load routes and track so that a track is also visible on the screen. With the Zumo you need to convert the track into a route before you can use it (meaning you might lose track information you wanted to keep)
· 2820 has route choice 'Fastest time' or 'Shortest Distnce' as prompted, so you can choose it as you set up navigation per route. The Zumo has this only as a unit setting for all routes
· 2820 screen quality is higher than Zumo
· 2820 has a QWERTY keyboard, the zumo uses ABCDE, which is not standard
· 2820 can set specific roads to be avoided, the zumo cannot.
· 2820 has additional compass features on screen that the Zumo doesn't

Let the flaming begin...

I buy most of my GPS equipment here..
http://www.gpsdiscount.com/

I am not a fan of completely touch screen units on a bike, so I like the 2820 more. I still have my Street Pilot III which is ancient history at this point, but it still works, and it has buttons.

Hippo,
No flaming from me.
I never said the Zumo was better than the 2820. I was only pointing out some features. Never said the 2820 wasn't waterproof.

As to the difference, true the 2820 has more/better features than the 550 but if you look at the 660 it has better/more features than the 2820.
Some of the features of the 660 are: (From Garmins site)
Better screen 480x270 vs the 454x240 of the 2820
Qwerty and ABC Keyboard
Lane assist
3D buildings
Bluetooth A2DP
Speed Limit Indicator
Where Am I

Here is the complete list:

i have ridden with the 2720, 2820, and the 550...hands down the 550 is a great deal. I wish I could upgrade to the 660 but since I got my 550 a year ago i can justify. there is a reason the 2820's are 150.00 and 550's 600.00+ but having used them both I'd spend the money again.

Will do. But from what I understand, or read somewhere, Garmin is using a standardized mounting hole location, so I'm hoping I can bolt it directly to my current mount.
Here are some pictures of the custom mount I made.

My $.02 - I have the 2820 (has bluetooth, where the 2720 does not - my understanding). I like the form factor of the StreetPilot series better than the Zumo. It is widescreen which makes it not as tall as the Zumo. As MrWatson said, The $99 GPS kit from Vic comes with the mount and plug-and-play cable for audio integration with radio and supplying power to the unit. I think Arizona Victory is the only place that sells the taller Zumo mount for mounting on the console / radio area, and you still have to splice in the wiring for power and sound.

Anny came with the 2820 and Victory supplied every option for it with the 10th Anny Visions. It gets me where I am going. It works with the bike. Buy a low cost new unit and take the money you save and buy a 16GiG Ipod Gen 2. Both of these work great with the Vision.
Yes some GPS units have lots of bells and whistle so does a cellphone and how many of those options do you ever use?
Plus you should have enough money left over for several tanks of gas.

Bought a refurbished 2720 off of ebay for $100 and it works great. With the Vic kit is plugged right into the bike. When you use the Garmin mapping software, it's very easy to build a route (like the 2,000 mile one I'm taking) on your home PC, and download it to the Unit. I've got all of the Vic dealers and it has the quick search function to find gas stations, etc. I too, like the wide screen view, but really don't use it much in my day to day riding. The GPS is only when I'm about 80 miles from home and 'get lost' and hit the 'Home' button.

Did you get your 660 installed?

How did it work out?

Do you have pics?

I'm a bit confused on the whole GPS thing also, perhaps because I've never owned one (but more likely becuase I don't know the difference between a wrench and a wench).

I'm finding Garmin 2820's from $300 to $1,000.00.  I have no problem buying a refurb.  Then I buy the Victory mount (can I use any of the mounts Victory sells?).

After that, do I need to buy anything to wire it in or is it plug and play?

TIA

If you buy a 2820..which u should be able to get a refurb for around 230 last time I checked and buy the victory gps kit..you will need nothing else..use the cable supplied with the vicory kit and it will plug right into the gps and harness.

Sorry if I'm being dense here but the only Victory products I can find are the whole unit and just the mount for $90.00. (http://www.purepolaris.com/Detail.aspx?ItemID=2875742(PolarisPGACatalog)

When you say "kit" do you just mean the mount?

Buy the mount, it comes with what you need, if you have a 2720 or 2820. It is kiind of a kit as it contains the mount and wire. Easy to install, there have been several posts here on how to do it.

with the 2820 and 2720, people say you can build a route. How do you do that? Can you pick and choose which roads your going to take to a specific destination, and how do you do it? I asked a couple places that sell GPS units and they told me you couldn't do it.

Do you load the software on your computer? Do you build a route picking roads of your choice to a specific destination and download it to the GPS? Sorry for my ignorant questions. I've never really looked at GPS units before. I did go to a couple stores and they told me it cannot be done.

Personally I never saw a 2820 for 150..I saw them at 220 or so. I got my 2720 for 110 on ebay with 1 year warranty. Unless u want Bluetooth and MP3..just go with 2720(my opinion).
