Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | Okay, who will admit using GPS tracking? As much as I heard of these things I know nothing about them. I know there are cellphones that are capable of "buddy" locations and so on, but I don't have such a phone. It is probably too late to order one off line and have in time for Saturday, but I thought I'd inquire to see who had the "GPS Tracking for Dummies" version. It would be nice to have it by Saturday so the wifey can know where I am and be sitting by I-95 with a cool drink and a smack when came by. I'm thinking of something that is reasonably priced, small and can be tracked over the internet. what do you folks know about such a device? |

Posts: 13 Lebanon, PA | I have a Tom Tom Rider GPS on my Vision and I believe it is capable of locating your "buddies". If I remember correctely I tried to use the feature and was never able to get it to work. That being said, I found the information on the Internet while researching the Rider GPS. Like Bar Hopper said "do you really want her to find you?" Unless you're going to the back woods somewhere. Do I hear banjos? |

Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | The point is that I control the button to turn it on and off, not that I have a reason to hide, but while I'm on the road for 19 hours Saturday the wifey could follow me on the route. Also, when I ride to Texas and sundry other long distant rides and she ain't with me she'll at least know the big wheels are rollin'. Thanks for the inputs. I don't think I'll have it this go around.

Posts: 3006 San Antonio, TX | I do have a phone that can download and use Google Maps. The phone does not have a GPS in it. I have Latitude setup in Google Maps and shared this information to three of my friends.
I can turn it on or off. They can find me within a few miles (no GPS yet) and tell the wife I am still moving and not dead.
More then once I came home a few minutes later then someone thought that I should, they panic and start calling everyone I know.
She does not realize that a Vision loves to be ridden. Thirty minutes late means thirty more minutes of "Vision Time!"

Read your post earlier and this is the only GPS I know of that will transmit its position to another unit......range is an issue here as it works on the FRS radio system:
Garmin's new Rino series integrate full function GPS receivers with FRS/GMRS radio transceivers to provide two-way communications up to 2 miles using the FRS channels and up to 5 miles using GMRS channels. These distinctive units feature the unique ability to "beam" your exact location to another Rino user within a two-mile range using the FRS spectrum. This important feature is called Peer-to-Peer Positioning. The Rino boasts GARMIN's traditional tough, lightweight, waterproof design to handle the rigors of any outdoor adventure. And because the Rino has standard FRS capabilities, you can talk to friends or family who own conventional FRS radios. |

Posts: 301 Buffalo Grove,Ill | Here is a link to a rather lengthy thread about me buying my bike. but if you go to the end you will see that on my trip home i used the spotgps system andit will show my route and how it tracked me. I believe the route i took from Florida back to Chicago starts on page 2. if the link isnt a hyperlink then just copy and paste.

Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | Thanks clubford, that is seems to be a great little device and had actually read something that fishwitch had wrote up about it, but had forgotten. I might be able to go to one of the Basspro shops and see if they got one since I'm in the n-hour. Frankly, at this point, and as always, I wait to the last minute and have to focus on the ride itself but we'll see what pans out. It is in the "cool" category, as I was planning to make a quick call or text at each stop, but that would be a 2 to 3 hour pan in between. I like the idea of tracking the weather for you as well, but I'm not sure if it would change anything for me, unless it was torrential down pours and tornado warnings. Before I know it Saturday will be here and gone... |

Not a cheap service, $99 a year basic, $150.00 a year with tracking , but if safety is your concern, then I'm sure it's worth it. |
