Posts: 143 Birmingham, AL 08 MC Tour Premium 2012 Bronze Mist | I must have over torqued the oil drain plug at last oil change.
I went to remove this time and it would not come out, it backed out a little, then just went round and round. Had to use a small tipped flat blade screwdriver to wedge below the head to get it out while loosening the plug with the rachet.
I need advice, besides letting the dealer do my oil changes from now on. I've changed the oil on all my bikes, 7 goldwings and 4 harleys and never had this happen.
Heliacoil, tap to next larger size, jb weld it shut forever???
Somebody help! |

Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | I feeeeeel your pain excelboy. I'm hoping a good wrench will provide a better solution, but I would tap and go another size larger. They used to use rubber plugs on cars but I don't know how that would work on a rockin' V-Twin. |

Posts: 404 San Antonio, TX United States | If the plug is still in the bike, take a Torx bit that is tight fitting or almost to large. Take the bike and lay her over on the tip over protection and take a hammer and start the torx bit into the soft aluminum plug. My tool of choice here would be a 3/8 drive impact driver (not a air impact)and a 3/8 drive torx bit. This would remove the plug and the threads in the cast engine case should not be damged. |

Posts: 562 SC, Bluffton | My Kawasaki VN2000 has 3 drain plugs. 1 is in the soft alluminum block over the clutch. Yeah, I stripped that puppy!!!! It was an 8mm bolt. 10mm seamed too aggressive, so there was an SAE tap right in between. I still have to wrap the SAE bolt with the white pipe tape (teflon tape) so there is no drips. I have traveled over 12,000 miles & 3 oil changes this way. Doesn't lose a drip, BUT I don't think there is much pressure in this area on the Kawasaki. Maybe the other Board members comments will let you know if my easy fix is good enough for the Vision?

| I recall someone else here having said that they had a dealer on a trip change their oil only to find the plug stripped upon returning home and attempting to service oil. I haven't stripped mine or really had any indication that I've over-torqued the plug but on several oil changes I noticed the plug didn't really want to break loose easily. I always use a new copper seal and tighten to slightly less than the specified torque due to the problems I've had getting it to initially break free.
I wonder how many folks have had one strip? Might be something that needs looked at? |

Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | To date mine seems to be fairly solid which is unusual with most drain plugs. maybe I'm getting weak, but when I tighten mine it comes to a solid halt. It is a bear to remove as well, so I really don't know what else to say expect this is my input on the matter. |

Posts: 804 Perry Hall, MD | Done a lot of oil changes in my day, but today's didn't go as well as the rest.
For anyone else that may have the same problem a complete repair kit can be found at the following site. For a few bucks less it includes the installation tools (and enough inserts to do 5 repairs) which do not come with the Arizona kit. Not certain if the stock drain plug will fit though.

| Since a time sert was not immediately available I went with Kevinx's recommendation of a +1 drain plug, actually the parts stores I went to didn't know what a +1 was so I told them I needed an oversize plug, the closest they had was a 12x1.75, I'll have my local dealer do a timeset the next time I need the oil changed, they charge $89 + of course the oil change. |

Posts: 804 Perry Hall, MD | Couldn't find the timesert local so I went with a helicoil for about the same price. Suggestion for anyone trying the same repair, some grease on the drill bit and tap will grab the metal filings to keep them out of the crankcase.
Best suggestion is still from a99miata "get a torque wrench."
Found the tipovers to be a blessing when doing the job. |

Posts: 575 Spirit Lake IA "Birthplace of Victory Motorcycles" | Anyone know the size of the oil drain plug for an 09 Vision . . . I'd assume it is the same size as all the '10 and previous 106 engines. I know it takes a 9 mm hex, but I'm assuming the size is listed by thread diameter??
The hex head is stripped and I want to buy a replacement plug before I remove my old one. Closest dealership is 1.5 hrs away or I'd just ride over and get one. I had used a torque wrench and this is only my 3rd oil change . . . damned that metal is soft! Anyone use one of the plugs with the magnets on it?? |

Posts: 185 Rhode Island | Anyone ever try an oil extractor or oil pump and change it from the top side? I know they use them on boats but don't know anyone that uses one on a bike.

Posts: 226 on the edge of Los Angeles | No doubt when it happens(d) It sure sucks if you are not preparred. I used a standard 1/2 20 tap and a modified drain plug with a 3/4" head that would fit into the recessed machined area of the case. I did shorten the head of the plug down to about .125" so it set more flush.
This is where the tip overs come in handy too. After I tapped the hole I ran a quart of oil through to help carry out the cuttings. Most important part is to make sure you are threading the hole square with the machined recess. Total Cost = 1 quart of oil, 1 plug, 1 copper washer, and 1 more gray hair.... Under $5.00

Posts: 88 Nova Scotia , Canada | Hi there, I use a new washer as Teach indicated, I dry the plug off well and apply a small amount of silicone sealer to the last few threads and the washer, wipe out the threads of the casing and then tighten up the plug with a torque wrench a little less than the spec sheet calls for. I have Never had a problem with a car, bike (Suzuki, 08 Tour Premium), or lawnmower

good advice, I'm going to try a torque wrench the next time I have to change the oil. So far, no problems after about 20 or so oil changes. I've used the same washer now for about a year, though I've got a few on stand by. Never have torqued mine and it still feels rock solid when installing. |

Posts: 118 Capitol Region of NH | Yes, I changed to the magnetic drain plug on my second oil change, the first one I did after the initial dealer service. I have changed mine a number of times, always using a new copper crush washer. I have never had any issue removing the plug or re-tightening it. I simply go just past snug and have never had an issue. |
