I just got an email from a motorcycle buddy of mine in Northern Virginia. he was telling me about the news story he saw on tv this morning. You guys wont believe this.

I dont know what state this happened in but a woman was on her motorcycle sitting at a taffic light and was rear ended and KILLED because another woman driving her car ran into her. The photos of the bike showed the entire rear end of the motorcyle bent up and over the gas tank.

The driver of the vehicle told the cops "she really wasnt paying attention SHE WAS PAINTING HER FINGERNAILS !!!!!! Im so F-ing mad right now at that story my blood pressure is going through the roof. The dead woman was a single mother, with one teenage son, and had been riding motorcycles for years, taken the safety courses etc.
I guess this is one more serious example that its not us, its them. and we have to always remember we can never let go our senses and be totally relaxed. Be safe guys.

That's why they teach us to leave the bike in first, watch the car behind you come to a stop, and then put the bike in neutral. To this day I still do this. Sad story....damn cagers!

If you want a reason to watch behind you check these videos out from a 60 mph road that I travel often.

The news story of a bus rear ending a car in San Antonio on Loop 410 near North Star Mall.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTT92BHbh3U&NR=1

Raw Video from the same bus crash.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCHdZxO4_tQ&NR=1

The bus driver was fired. I wonder if the text message he sent was worth his job or maybe your life?

CHECK YOUR SIX!!!!!!

I do the same.. I doesn't go to neutral until the guy behind me is stopped, and it doesn't go into neutral if there is no one behind me, cause there probably will be before the light changes. Actually I stay in gear most of the time, but sometimes ya just need stretch your wrist, or... maybe like around here you are waiting for the train to pass.... or the occasional 5 minute traffic light, etc etc...

But not to distract... it's well into the riding season in many areas, and getting into it in others. We just need to be more aware, educate when we can, and most of all, always be aware of your surroundings. Unfortunately stupidity like this does not only affect us on bikes.. I've been rear-ended in a car twice in the past 15 years or so. Granted I survived, but the sad truth is if I was on a bike, all things being equal, I likely would have been able to get out of the way (shoulder, lane split, something/anything). In the car I was trapped, unable to go anywhere because of other stopped vehicles and just had to watch it comi'n in the rear view mirror.

Just to add... when stopping at a light/stop sign behind another vehicle don't stop on center, stay to the left or right so you have an escape route around the side. Also leave a little extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Ride safe!

LAKE ZURICH - A northwest suburban woman was thrown from her motorcycle and killed Saturday after a driver from Morris - allegedly painting her fingernails at the time of the crash - failed to stop at a red light and slammed into the bike, authorities said.

The incident happened about 5:30 p.m. Saturday in a southbound lane of Route 12 at Old McHenry Road in an unincorporated area near Lake Zurich, according to Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Scott Morrison.

Anita Zaffke, 56, of the 1500 block of Eddy Lane in Lake Zurich, died about an hour later at Advocate Good Shepard Hospital in Barrington after suffering apparent chest and abdominal injuries from being thrown from her motorcycle, Lake County Coroner Richard Keller said.

A Monday autopsy found Zaffke died of multiple internal injuries to the chest and abdominal area, as well as a spinal fracture, according to Keller, who said the death has been ruled an accident.

Zaffke's motorcycle was stopped at a red light at the intersection, which Morrison described as being T-shaped with a stoplight, when a Chevrolet Impala struck the bike from behind at a high rate of speed, Morrison said.

Zaffke was thrown "a couple hundred feet," according to Keller, who said she was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Chevy has been identified as Laura Hunt, 46, of Morris. She has been charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and the state's attorney's office is investigating further charges, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said. She was also hospitalized following the crash for non-life-threatening injuries.

Keller said the woman told police she was painting her fingernails and did not notice the light was red.

"There's a lot of analysis they still have to work out on the vehicle involved in the crash to determine speed and braking," Morrison said Sunday evening. "The investigation is ongoing but there should be charges against the woman in the very near future."

This is the same one that happened in Lake Zurich. My Girl Friend was at the scene not more than 15 minutes after it happened. Said the helmet was anout 30 yards from where the bike was. Not Good

So how can the cops label this as an 'accident?' Painting your fingernails is a concious decision....thus this sounds like negligence.

Great reminder. I'm watching all the more as we are having rainy days here for the past week almost. People seem to get really stupid when it rains as there are some that want to drive cautiously and that annoys the idiots and makes them drive all the more aggressive. These are the same people who don't realize their stopping distance is greatly increased and will get themselves in a jam and cause an accident.

I constantly watch to the rear and position myself to be out of the way of idiots. I stop to the far outside toward the shoulder in whatever lane I'm in, so I'll have an out if the guy behind me doesn't stop in time. There are situations in all aspects of life, Gen. Patton survived many battles and yet died from injuries from a "minor" traffic accident.

I had a traffic situation the other day where I was in the slow lane passing an entrance ramp onto north 95. I was behind a truck when all of a sudden there was this jerk in a Jeep Commander in the center lane shooting behind me trying to use the ramp runway as a passing lane to get around the truck. He mis-judged and the truck forced him into the shoulder as the lane ran out. Not willing to give in to his stupidity, I layed on the horn as he gave in and come back behind me to the center lane.

I paced myself from there on out to be beside him or behind him the rest of the way to work. Curiously he actually had to go past where I made my final turn off. He was still trying to do manuevers yet he never got too far ahead. I never tried to do anything except lurk. He had gotten well a head of me at the exit ramp but I found myself sitting next to him at the traffic light right off the exit but never looked at him. From there I just put myself in a lane beside him. Just as I was making mine final turn I looked over and you could tell his woman was a little shaken that this motorcycle kept popping up at every turn and he was just looking straight ahead. He looked like a snoop dog wannabe.

That was just a week after I was almost T-boned by a lady running a red light that swore she never saw the light red, yet cars were stopped in the left lane. Had I not have hesitated on my green as I usually do, I would not have been writing this today as she came through as though the light wasn't there. When I made a quick stop in the intersection, the Vision went down on the tipovers with the front literally inches from the vehicle as it zipped by. There was a witness that saw me "drop" the bike and called the police and then followed the truck. I was stopping to get bbq at that same intersection and while I was waiting for my order a police officer came in to ask me to go out and ID the vehicle. It was an senior lady (to be politically correct) that was visibily upset at that the notion she did not see the light and almost had hit me. The police officer wanted to see the damage as they were told she hit me, and I told him I only let the bike go down from stopping hard and the front wheel was cocked. He wanted to see the damage from dropping the bike and I told him there was none as the tip over protection is for just that purpose. Anyway, they took my info and I figured they gave her a running redlight as there was no contact and fortunetly no accident. I have no plans to tell my wife as this was more than just a close call, I believe the hand of God was there. She would tell me to sell the bike immediately if I told her that one. As I was braking I was literally anticipating the impact as I saw no out at all and knew this was not going to be very pretty.

WATCH YOURSELVES - this was an eye opener for me. Prayers for the lady's family in the orginal post, so tragic from something so stupid.

Can't agree more!

I can also look at it another way, there is no right answer IMO. The woman who killed the lady fucked up big time and should be punished somehow some way. She will live with this the rest of her life If it were me (yes I have made a ton of stupid decisions, thank God something like this did not happen), I would be totally screwed up. Don't think that the lady had any intensions of killing the women when she decided she need to do her mails while driving. I answer the phone when it rings while driving (try to use a head set most of the time) and have done a few textes in my day. This could happen to me or anyone else. I hear of accidents and deaths a lot because some is on the phone or texting.

Should she do Jail time?? I really don't know the answer. I think she should have to go to schools and where ever to tell people how she screwed up and how things happen in 10th of a second. Just my thought

Actually I think she could be charge with criminal vehicular homicide.
Guys/gals this is the exact reason your insurance company and your attorney tell you to admit nothing until after you have talk to your attorney.

Laura Hunt needs to serve a sentence for what she did. I just do not think having to live with the memory and doing community service makes up for her negligently taking someone else's life. Anita Zaffke's family will have only their memories of Anita and the horrific manner she was taken from them. IMHO Laura Hunt needs to serve jail time.

That said: For what it's worth this is my procedure for a traffic stop; as I roll up I check to see which side of my lane offers me the best avenue of escape right or left and move to that side, I always leave two plus car lengths between me and the stopped car ahead of me, I never ever put the bike in neutral and I never take my eyes off the mirror until the approaching vehicle has stopped.

Blackjack

For those who may be interested, here's a link to a petition site that is trying to get increased penalties for this sort of accident (cage vs. bike).

http://www.petitiononline.com/sabiker/petition.html

I've no connection to the people or the site, just interested in the outcome.....

Sounds like the "bad habits" may have come from the old days. It was handy riding bikes with suicide clutches to drift to stop in neutral. Also, we used to have a fear of wearing out our throw-out bearing by keeping the clutch disingaged to much. I am told that this is not an issue now a days. My bike stays in gear now at red lights, ready to vacate the location.

update on the driver doing her nails...

Illinois - Traffic charge dropped against driver doing nails
WAUKEGAN -- Lake County prosecutors have thrown out a traffic violation against a driver who was allegedly painting her nails when she rear-ended and killed a motorcyclist stopped at a traffic light.

State's attorney Michael Waller says his office is investigating whether more serious charges can be filed against 48-year-old Lora Hunt of Morris.

Had Hunt appeared as scheduled in traffic court Monday, prosecutors say they may not have been able to try her on more serious charges because of a double jeopardy statute. The statute says people can't be tried twice on the same facts.

Officials say Hunt was using red polish to paint her nails when she hit and killed 56-year-old Anita Zaffke on May 2 in Wauconda.

As well as leaving yourself an "out" when stopped, it's also a good idea to pump the brake lights while watching a car approach from behind to make the bike a little more visible and eye-catching.

ALWAYS assume the other driver is a total moron and might/will do the dumbest thing they can possibly do. The roads are truly filled with idiots and every little bit helps.

People in cars take driving for ganted. They are so busy with other things they dont pay attention to driving. Technology hasnt helped. I see it all of the time in LA, people driving right next to each other oblivious to the world around them. Todays cars have ipod & bluetooth capability which distracts from the task at hand, DRIVING! The worst part is none of these drivers knows any better. Kids walking or riding their bikes dont know any better because they have never been behind the wheel. Peoplie in cars should, but they dont. I have been driving/riding for 42 years and the one thing I remember from my driving instructor in high school is "you are only as good as the worst driver on the road". Regardless of YOUR skill, There will always be that mindless driver to deal with.

correct me if im wrong please. being in gear Only helps if you have some place to go? if there is a car in front of you where would u go if your in gear? even if there is Not anyone in front of you, do you just pull out right into the traffic with the green light ? there is "probably" alot less circumstances where being in gear would actually matter in such a way where it would save your life? or am i completely not seeing it?

The MSF doctrine is that you should stop far enough behind the vehicle in front of you, aimed a bit either right or left, so that you can go around that vehicle whichever way presents the most room, dependant on the circumstances. I would think the reasoning is that even if you have to scrape the side of another vehicle, or force a vehicle coming up on your right or left, or oncoming to swerve to avoid you, which would be the natural reaction of a driver paying attention, (Hopefully..), it would be better than being crushed between the vehicle in front of you and the one about to rear-end you.

Ark you should ALWAYS have a place to go or you are fricken up real bad. Being rear ended is a VERY common occurance for riders stopped at traffic lights. I've jumped curbs and ridden into fields to avoid being rear ended in the past. I never take my eyes off the rear until I have at least two cages stopped behind me.

Pumping the brake lights at stoplights, good idea!

That is something that I do. Especially with the big V brake lights on the VV! The blinking taillights catch a lot of attention.

CRIMINAL negligence, as in VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER

I agree- manslaughter at the least. Same should apply to those texting, or using cell phones.

When I stop, I usually remember to flash the brake lights at any cars behind me.

You always leave enough room between the vehicle in front of you so that you could attempt to go left or right around him if rear collision is imminenet and safe for you to do so.
I believe its taught this way, I leave almost a car length min in front myself.

This is tough no matter where you are as there is no guarantee of what the person will do behind you. I almost got bit by this one windy day at a light. I was stopped with a car in front and wasnt' even thinking about behind me. I heard some screeching noises but thought was the wind blowing something around and I heard metal contact. I started looking around and finally checked my mirror to see a car behind the car behind me that I didn't know was there shoved into his tailend and half up on the curve. I was just thankful that other car pulled in behind me, otherwise it would have been me.

But for the most part I look behind me and if I'm alone at a light when others are coming up, I'll pump my brakes to make the lights flash and watch to see if they are doing anything to slow down. If safe, I'd be ready to make a hard left or right across lanes to move out their way, but, again, where is the absolute 100% guarentee...?
