Ruskin, Fl | I don't have any photos, but I hit a patch of crumbled up asphalt today and was on the ground before I knew I was falling. I cannot believe how fast S%t happens. Broke the front tipover off the frame, which in turn led to serious body work damage and crushed floor board. It happened right in front of my local shop. I would have left it with him, but his mechanic is thinking the frame needs to be welded or replaced. I do not want a bike with a part welded back on the chassis.
Anyway, I'm glad I had my helmet on. Hit my helmet on the ground, some how took the skin off my finger tips, some misc road rash and my knee is starting to swell. I was not going fast at all, maybe 20 MPH. I wouldn't wish a high speed wreck on anybody.
On the up side, if they total it may gap insurance will cover my 1000 dollar deductible and I get a '09. I'll keep you advised.

The dealers mechanic indicated that "no way" would he certify the bike after a rear-end collision. Also looking at an '09 as soon as I get the ok from my insurance. |

Centennial, CO | Never a matter of IF you will be on the ground...more a matter of WHEN. I always thought I was too good to drop my ride. Well, it happened and more than once. Even my cop friend who rides daily on his cruiser has had mishaps that were non-cop like related. He hit a curb one time, drove into a pot-hole another...both times causing him to take some paint off of his helmet. I NEVER thought he would go down. He is a GREAT rider and I only wish I could maneuver a bike like he does.
I truly am happy you are okay (relatively speaking). Knees are the worst. I hope its only a bruise and nothing more serious.
As they say...never ride faster than your Angel can fly! Clearly...your Angel was on top of things and kept you from being hurt badly! Woohoo! |

Ruskin, Fl | Thanks everone. I think I'll be healed before I have a bike to ride. The body panel took a good enough hit to bend the inner fairing whick I had painted black, so there is paint work involved too. Looking at page 3.14 of the PDF manual it looks like a large "U" shaped subframe is bolted on. Too bad (LOL) I didn't "recover" the tipover with the broken mount. There is nothing to weld on without it. |

Rockford, IL | Of course....like everyone else....glad you aren't beat to badly. Couple of scuffs and bruises can be be dealt with with some time and some pills. I strongly suggest you take some muscle relaxers today and tomorrow. You are gonna feel much worse tomorrow than you do now....trust me. I live on Aleve somedays, works for my needs. As far as the bike the frame for the front tipover is a seperate item from the main upper cast portion of the frame. It bolts on, not welded. See part #23 in the chassis/frame section here http://parts.polarisind.com/Assemblies.asp so no worries about something being "welded back on" and possibly causing a problem. I think you may have been misinformed about GAP insurance. It does not cover a deductible. It covers the difference between the bike value and the loan amount when the vehicle is a total loss. At least I've never seen it cover a deductible, and I've been in the industry for more than a few decades. A little bit of opinion......usually a $1000 deductible on anything is kinda not worth the savings of having it. For example, with my insurance the difference in cost between a $500 and a $1000 deductible is only $23, so it would take about 22 years of no claims to justify the savings. I stongly suggest that prior to choosing such a high deductible that folks "run the numbers" and then decide if its worth it. Sometimes it might be, but most of the time it isn't. As I suggested to VisionBob a few weeks ago....might want to save your old damaged parts. With the crowd around this place who knows what can be scavenged off them in the future. Its fairly apparent that a few of us could use a few screws and bolts to keep things tight.

| Glad you are okay. That's the most important thing.
I would consider riding a bike with a welded frame if I can our company weld inspector okay it. He would be really picky and do a NDT on it. When properly done the weld is stronger than the steel. Of course the big word is properly. |

Rockwall, TX United States | I was out on the local FMs and rolled up on a couple of squad cars parked off to the side of the road at the head of a blind left hand sweeper. As I started into the turn, I saw a beautiful Ultra that had gone off the road and was on its side in the bar ditch. No one seemed to be injured and everything seemed to be well in hand as I passed the accident. Spring is in the air and, coming out of an extended break from riding, this accident was a sober reminder to me to dial it back a bit and spend some time practicing basic skills (emergency braking, object fixation, cornering, tight circling&hellip before riding more aggressively. I still had a good time and feel it was worth the investment. Good luck with your body and the bike. Kit

Ruskin, Fl | Thanks Lotzafun. When I bought my last bike I was told that the GAP insurance covered up to $1000 on a total loss. I never read the contract and I'm sure you are correct. It's a moot point since I doubt it's that bad to write off. I went on Progressive's website. The premuim differance is $96.96 a year for my policy. Still 5 years to be worth it, but hindsight is 20/20. |

Pack that knee in ice to cut down on the swelling. My favorite cold pack is a quart ziplock bag of ice and water wrapped in a towel.
Please post a picture of the helmet if you still have it. It would be a good reminder for everyone here.

Ruskin, Fl | Thanks Teach. Ice is helping alot. I got my paramedic license Monday, which means I am a terrible patient. My coworkers gave me grief for not going for an x-ray. I'm on duty tomorrow and if the chief sees me limping, guess where I'll be going. Thee helmet has very little damage, but I'll get a shot of it. I was a 50% helmet rider. This was a blessing in disguise because as much as I don't like it, it's staying on. |

Tucson, AZ | I'm happy for you that there was minimal physical damage to you. I know what you mean by things happening quickly. Two weeks ago I didn't get the slide stand all the way out, and the bike fell on me trapping my foot under the the rear stop. Hurt like hell. This was in my garage with no one else home. Luckily I was able to get my foot out with just some skin missing and couple of bruises. Really sorry about the bike. |

I rear ended a pickup with mine back in Oct, pushed the front tip-over back, damaged the inner and outer fairings, headlight, forks and the frame section that holds it all together total of $6200......... Everything in the front and lower frame area is bolt off, bolt on so unless there was damage to the engine where the frame sections attach the repair should be relatively simple and of course, your bike will be just like new. The only pain I had to endure was that it took 2 months to get mine back.

Your buddy or friend, significant partner, rider whoo haa, insert policatically incorrect name, etc. must give said item to you for good luck and friendship. But then again, I heard that from a HD guy, so not sure how true it is. Considering he never gave me one, not sure how good of a buddy he is, but I still like him (platonically speaking), Jeesh! |

Yep that's what I heard too! I was lamenting this fact at my dealer and the owner happened to stroll by where we were sitting. Upon hearing my challenge he reached across the parts counter....grabbed a bell and handed it to me as a gift.
Cool stuff! I was riding today and could hear the nice 'jingle' from underneath the cowling. Ride safe everyone. |

New Bohemia, VA | I don't have a bell, I guess no one cares enough for me to give me one. But out of the estimated 120,000 miles I have on a bike I've only laid it down once, and that was on my CB750 doing about 20-25mph in a hard left turn onto a street that the plane changed on me. The thought shot through my mind that I was going down, just before I went down when the side stand lever hit and throw the rear tire up. I came off the bike in a parachute landing fall (PLF) stance with my arms rotated in front of my face. I was road rashed from the elbows to the far end of the forearms on both arms. The worst thing I hurt that day was my pride, and if the old addage is true, you'll lay it down at least once, I hope that is it.
Mike, glad to hear they can fix the bike and you're doing okay. Saw the pics.
