I really think it is a waste of time to ask this question as the real deals I feel don't even own a computer, not to bust on anyone here. I think there is a distinct difference between hard core and having a passion, yet they cross some lines. I bring this up in part from SF posts, but also from a conversation I had today.

I talked with a co-worker who is in the IT group where I work. We really don't know each other until today. He knew me from a far as the guy that rides everyday. So he finally meets me and shares with me a gym friend named Roger. He tells me that Roger rides everyday, literally, as Roger did not own a car. Roger comes from England or some place where there is an accent like that but has been in the states many years. He owns several bikes and loves to ride, obvisiously. Billy tells me that there has been more than one occassion, even during the winter when it was pouring rain, and there would be Roger's bike outside the gym. Roger shared with Billy that his wife left him because of his passion for motorcycles and that he was proned to get up and go riding for days, just on a whim. After his divorce he started dating again and went and bought a small car so he could date this one girl. I'm hoping to meet Roger someday soon to meet a fellow rider with such an unbridled passion.

I guess I'm not asking for input, but feel free to do so. I just wanted to share my conversation with Billy, who is a self-professed fair-weather rider.

I think "hardcore" has too many definitions.
Some people think it means someone that rides with 1%ers. When I was interview for a group of that (at the time I did not know they were) They asked if I had a problem with going to the bar? I said I did not but I ride not sit in a bar for hours.
Some people think it means a person that rides in all kinds of weather? Is that true if the person can't afford a car and rides a M/C to work?
Some people call it someone that rides a 1,000 miles a day?
Others say it's someone that puts on 100,000 miles.
I know riders that say it's someone that built their own bike from a basket case.

I love to ride and have put on 100,000 miles in the 10 years on Victory M/Cs. My weakness is I live 2 blocks from work. How many miles would I have if I rode to work?

I enjoy when someone rides because they enjoy it like me. They can enjoy long rides and short rides. I prefer to say someone loves riding instead of "hardcore".

I think I would say someone is "hardcore" when they love riding, don't ride stupidly, stop to make sure someone isn't broke down, enjoys swapping lies/stories about riding with others, doesn't worry if it might rain during the ride, has enough experience to do at least minor repairs to a bike and the most important thing is that they enjoy life.

I view the hardcore biker as one that lives on his bike, it could be a 1%, it could be a lone wolf, but the guy or gal lives for their bike and the ride. That is why, in my mind that person wouldn't be here on a forum. However, I have met tons of riders that ride for the pure passion of it, there is many and plenty of those around us.

I wasn't really throwing the topic up for debate as it will run down rat holes of distinction, but segue in from songfans post on hard core bikers. I love a conversation with a person who has a passion for riding and I work with a few and we have to remind ourselves, it is work time. Like Billy yesterday, he took care of my issue within 5 minutes and we talked bikes for 20 minutes. He is a self professed fairweather rider, but I believe he has a growing passion and loves to talk bikes, thus he shared with me Roger. So you are right BOUSA, there is too many definitions and I find myself less concerned with what is a hardcore and just enjoy the fellowship with those who share the passion.

In my younger days, I rode with some 1%ers and found that I couldn't live up to THEIR expectations of what a "biker" is. Too much booze & drugs and I just couldn't go along with the way they treated their women & others who weren't like them.

I like what Chris said about it being a "passion". I don't have as many miles as he & others have because: 1- I'm retired & don't ride to work and 2- I'm having some health issues that won't allow me to ride as much as I'd like to. But I WANT to ride and that's what we're talking about here

BTW I find that I'm doing the ATGATT thing more now than I ever did before. What's ATGATT you ask? ALL THE GEAR, ALL THE TIME. Helmet, gloves, boots, chaps, leather jacket, etc, etc, etc.

I have been riding for over 40 yrs now on many different bikes on many different types of trips-long and short, near and far. On a trip a couple of years ago, I wound up in a bar in Wisconsin up by Lake Superior where I met a young lad on his first tour. He was by himself as his buddies had decided not to go with him at the last minute so he went by himself. He was up from Detroit. As far as I am concerned this young fellow, on his new bike (Honda Aero) on his first tour and going alone was as "hard core" a biker as anyone. He rides for the enjoyment and pleasure of it as well as the adventure of meeting others on the road. Good for him for going when it would have been so easy for him to stay at home. Can you imagine the excitement of him going off along for the first time. Good on him and all others, whether a first timer or old timer, who ride for the joy of it. We had a great time that nite having consumed many beers and then stumbling off to our motels. No we didnt ride, having parked and covered our bikes already earlier.

One of these days we're going to ride together CoolHandLuke, you are full of surprises. I think I told you we are going to Manteo, NC instead of Savanah, but now that is even off. I'll be in Atlanta from 30 March to 2 April and the wife and I decided to postpone our 20th Anniversary outing for the moment. I will be riding to Atlanta as it stands right now. It is an 8 hour ride and if I fly, I'll spend 5 hours getting to and from and in the airport. I can handle the additional three hours doing something I really like doing.

I knew I was going to get a response when I put "Hard Core Bikers" in the title of that story.  For those of you who read it, I hope you can see the sarcasm in the title after my description of that day.

Two of the characters in that story have probably had more of an impact on me as a rider than anyone else.  The Screamin Eagle driver (SE) almost single-handedly turned me against ever owning a Harley.  I've worked with him for nearly 20 years and have watched him bash anyone who buys anything but his brand.  His narrowmindedness and pure distain for other riders is sickening.  He is every bit as brainwashed as a Mooney or a Jim Jones follower.  I have never ridden with him before Wednesday and I will never ride with him again.

I have also known the Ultra Driver (UD) for the same amount of time.  (We are all Air Traffic Controllers and hired on with the FAA the same year.)  I have listened to him talk to anybody anytime about any kind of motorcycle ever made.  I bought my first bike when I was 40 years old (11 years ago),  a V-Star 650.  I knew it was too small but it was a good starter bike and was a cheap lesson learned in case I didn't really get into it as much as I thought I might.  The Ultra Driver complimented me on my choice as it was stone cold reliable and would be easy to sell if I wanted to upgrade or even decided that I didn't like bikes afterall.  He was always willing to ride with me, offered endless tips and never talked down to me.  After a year or so on the V-Star, I got really serious about riding and decided to pick the style of riding I really liked.  I was a Sport-Tourer at heart.  I sold the V-Star and bought a Concours.  Again, UD was the first guy in line to help shake down my new ride.  He marveled at the 7.5 gallon tank and how much "bang for the buck" it was. He was also amazed at how much my riding skills had improved.  He knew my work schedule and always invited me to go ride, even if he knew I had other plans.  In 2007 he turned me on to this wild looking Touring bike that Victory was coming out with and the rest is history.

Both SE an UD are hardcore but only one is a true biker/rider/pilot in my eyes.

From Webster's dictionary

hard-core   /ˈhɑrdˈkɔr, -ˈkoʊr/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [hahrd-kawr, -kohr] Show IPA
–adjective 1. unswervingly committed; uncompromising; dedicated: a hard-core segregationist.
2. pruriently explicit; graphically depicted: hard-core pornography.
3. being so without apparent change or remedy; chronic: hard-core inflation; hard-core unemployment.

It seems like all of the above.

Ken and Pen,

Thanks for posting the picture. I do have a passion for riding.

Last week after a long hard day at work, (5 AM to 9 PM or as I call it "Bankers Hours" I walked out to the parking lot where the Vision is waiting for me. As soon as "Sparks" came into view, my body relaxed and the brain stopped thinking about work. I unlocked the trunk and then started the engine to warm it up. I put on the EXO-100, gloves and leather while choosing a playlist for the ride home.

Life is good and I am going home.

It is almost time for me to go home today. It is nice to know that the Vision will be there when I get upstairs.

Ride Safe.

So Cal
This was sent to me a long time ago. Iguess I kept it bacause most of it fits.
YOU KNOW YOU'RE A BIKER WHEN...
- You ever bought saddlebags so you can carry more beer.
- Your girl follows you to the party with the car so you can take more
beer.
- Your best friends are named after animals.
- Your best shoes have steel toes.
- You have motorcycle parts in the dishwasher.
- Your idea of jewelry is chains and barbwire.
- You can tell what kind of bugs they are by the taste of them.
- You're only sunburned on the back of your hands.
- You carry around a crushed beer can in the case of soft tar when you
park the bike.
- You pull your bike into the motel room and use a bath towel to wipe
it off.
- Your girl friend has to climb over the bike to do the laundry in the
basement.
- You carry a picture of your bike in your wallet.
- Any day you ride is a good day.
- Your other vehicle is a truck with motorcycle ramps in it.
- You get hit by a Taxi in N.Y.C., slide 80 yards and ride the bike
home 30 miles with a fractured hip.
- You've been too drunk to Piss but not to drunk to ride your bike
home.
- Your three piece suit are Chaps, Leather Vests & a Leather Jacket.
- You don't think its a good party till someone rides his or her bike
in and does doughnuts in the living room.
- You think Tequila is a Sex Aide.
- You wake up next to your girl and your first thought is if your bike
will start.
- Your kids learn to ride on the back of your bike before they can
walk.
- Your garage has more square footage than your house.
- Your coffee table collapses from the weight of motorcycle magazines
on it.
- You throw a party and more bikes show up than cars.
- Your kids take a motorcycle chain to Show and Tell .
- All your ashtrays are pistons from your last engine rebuild.

I don't drink, or do drugs at all, and don't see what either of those things have to do with being a hard core biker.

While my wife has a car I have not owned one myself in over 5 years. The car I owned then averaged a couple thousand miles a year[about what I average a month on a bike]

Of the last nine bikes I have owned; only four came pre-assembled.

I am good to my family

I have my friends back

Tats, and a pony taill

Am kind to animals, children, and dumb people

Don't know about you guys, but I pretty much have qualified from the time I was 16

The funny thing is that the majority of the people who beleive they're "hard-core bikers" are barhoppers. My fav is the folks who think because they trailered their bike to Sturgis "that one year" they're hard-core. Last year I did break-in run of 6K.Mi. I'm gearing up to run a 10K this fall and I don't think I'm hard-core. I hardly feel like a hard-core biker when I'm cruising on electronic cruise control and "roughing it" in the Ho-Jo in front of palm trees. The days of toting a sleeping bag on a hooptie 2-wheeler that you Jerry rigged to make run are long gone for most people. Anyway, I came out of lurking because this was also subject of debate with one of my personal friends. I still love my Vision even though it's been parked for 5 mo. waiting for parts back-ordered from Victory. It's been a LONG Winter.

What parts take 5 months to back order-that seems far too long for a new bike that is made not far from where you are. Must be something exotic that rarly needs replacing.

Don't know anything about hardcore bikers, nor do I believe for a second such a critter exists. There are all types of riders, some tour the country and the world. Others spend more time polishing than riding but do enjoy being a rider. Some own a cage and some don't. Some ride in fair weather and some in all weather. Some started early and some late while some ride fast and others quite slow.
I had a shop teacher when I was a youngin that rode his bike all year around (NW PA) regardless of weather or snowfall. Saw him ride his bike in snow that made horses lose footing. I kinda always thought he was the real deal, but if you asked him you'd find his bike was just transportation to work. He never rode it anywhere else.
I've ridden all over the world, in all kinds of weather, on all kinds of bikes. Each summer I head out and in late summer return in time for work to begin. A CAnadian friend of mine leaves a bit earlier in spring and returns when the snow flies in late fall. The point is neither of us consider ourselves to be anything other than fortunate to have the time to follow our passion for riding. Whether you ride 100 miles a year, or 50k, as long as you are enjoying the ride..... you are a rider. I'll leave the hardcore bit to someone more qualified to say.

Sorry guys, but I guess I'm just a guy who's passionate about riding. All of this Hardcore stuff looks like a bunch of 'nutty stuff' that most normal people don't want to do. Again....I think this is part of the problem with many riders today...they all want everyone else to THINK that they are Peter Fonda from Easy Rider! But they're actually a lawyer who owns a HD. Now if this lawyer is up for a 300--400 mile ride or a 4 day trip into the desert....he's fine by me. If this lawyer want to barhop....he needs to find another riding partner.

Cheers.

I think in part my post was just a ramble, but there again it will ignite the passion of debate. I think that is why I started the post with saying this post is a waste of time because the real deals I feel don't even own a computer. Now that comes from my impression of a "hard core biker". But it is also easy to see I think there is a few among us everyday, that might even post a comment or two. But I took it from the hard core biker to the biker with passion. In deed he MIGHT be that lawyer that wants to look the part and so on, but if he's got the real passion to ride, what about that?

I humored myself at the local HD joint again today and it was one of those "show off your ride" events. They had about 8 Harley categories, 1 non-harley category and 1 metric category. I didn't even enter, but I would have won the non-harley category as being the only one there on a Victory. The metric was covered by a wing and a kaw. But there were more Harleys in the show then there was just at the event, at least 3 to 1. And there wasn't even 20 in the show. Okay, so what was my point. Out of the 2 hours I was there talking to a few friends, besides them, I don't think their were many "real" bikers there. So with all of that, and at the end of the day, "who cares."

I enjoy talking with the bikers that when they tell you a story they are just sharing their experience. Like the older dude that jumped on my case for hauling a big bag in my backseat when I was returning from a trip. He said that if I had that much stuff, get a trailer because you are ruining your ride. He was talking about the handling and he's absolutely right. The bag was tall and I tried to strap it down but it threw off the balance of the ride. He goes on to share that he used to do sturgis every year. After the first year of packing the bike, he got a trailer. He said big difference and much more enjoyable. He was an old HDer, but we could talk Victory's easily. Why? Because he was a biker, maybe even hardcore. He hadn't rode much in the past few years because of heart attacks and back problems, but he just like riding and talking to bikers.

So, no problem in having the passion, that's what makes you a biker if it is real. Hard core, well, one day maybe, when I see many sunrises laying beside my bike and finding a place to lay down again when the sun set. Take a load off Annie....

My 2 cents worth. Hard core is probably defined differently by almost everyone on here. There will be gray areas that overlap.
My analogy is "there is a difference between SEXY and SLUTTY some cross over the line and dont know it, some cross over the line, because they do know it. end result is everyones happy.

Indian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a white government official,
'You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done.'

The Chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued, 'Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?'
The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. 'When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex.' Then the chief leaned back and smiled. 'Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.'
