FOUND IT !! The reason for the noise, that is!! 

A 3" split on the rear header pipe, just outside the cylinder head! It is so bad that it left an impression of the split on the inside of the chrome cover, which showed a 'blue' area on the outer surface, the same blueing as the pipe when it gets hot! Lots of backfiring when slowing down and when shifting.

Had to go with Freedom Performance pipes. Hopefully they'll last as long as the stock pipes did, just under 76K.

there is plenty of vic's with the same crack in the pipe. Its either cheap metal or to sharp a bend.

find a guy that can weld. He can close it up

AHHHH....NO! I don't think so!! No crap welding on this bike Sorry, questionable advise at best there Mr. Johnny!
