Posts: 42 Orange County | A friend of mine gave me his new helmet. It seems he dragged it on the ground and now has a large scratch on the left side. Does anyone know of a place that can repair helmets. The helmet is brand new and the condition of it on the inside is perfect. It's the outside that does not look good.

Also most helmets are only good for something like 5 years I think. Something to consider when springing the cash for that $1000 super-fancy-good-looking and gadget loaded helmet. It will expire. Sorry for your freind. Just the way this industry works. I have not heard of a 3rd party co. that does repairs either. I started to fix my own once and was told about this so I finally got frustarated and canned it. |

How bad is this scratch? You say "large". Is it large in length? Or is it large in width? Or large in depth?
If the scratch is long or wide the helmet can probably be repainted. Which any local shop can probably handle.
If the scratch is deep, as in a gouge, and has "penetrated" the outer layer of the helmet. Well...it probably isn't to wise to repair and paint.
I've heard of helmets "expiring" after a date. But I think this is more of a "release of liability" type thing for the manufacturer. They don't someone using a 15 yeard old helmet that was manufactured under safety ratings and standards that have been long outdated. I mean if you think about it....what in the heck would be in a helmet that would have a "shelf-life"?

Posts: 1158 Richmond, Virginia | Is this a re-paint to correct a scratch issue, or is this a gouge in the surface that needs filling, sanding and repairing? OR is this a whole so large that sunlight beams through? All of the above answers are correct to their own degree, but in reality all of us need more specific information as to the nature of the "scratch". Personally, i have a fetish for helmets so any reason to go buy a new one
is a good reason for me.... but there are people who will ride a 20,000.00 bike with a POC helmet and think nothing of it..
bottom line? what makes YOU more comfortable?
WAIT A MINUTE>>>>>> arent you the same guy who just posted that he was getting ready to go out and buy a new Vision??? and you are considering "repairing a used helmet"......
ugh..... a tear in my Vision heart just occurred.... its like buying a manion and decorating it with furniture from IKEA........... dude, buy a new friggen helmet....

Posts: 3006 San Antonio, TX | I will recommend two helmets to you that are really nice.
Scorpion EXO-100, This is a great half helmet with an internal sun shield that can activated on the fly. I can buy a black one for $110 to $120 and color $120 to 130. I am planning to get one with Christmas money.
Here is a video review. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOEfZ7iUieg
The Nolan 103, is convertible from full face to 3/4 helmet and has an internal sun shield that can activated on the fly. I have this helmet and it is great. The mechanism is very smooth to open or close. Price $360 to $380.

| Most motorcycle helmets should be discarded after an impact. If this helmet took a hit and thus was scratched, toss it and get a new one! |

Posts: 394 Tucson, AZ | I've owned a Scorpion EXO-100 for several months now and really like the helmet. The flip down vision is neat. I live in southern Arizona where the sun is very bright most of the time. Even with the darkest visor they sell, I still need sun glasses. Still an excellent product and very affordable. I think I paid $103.

Question: What is considered an "impact"? I've been doing some online reading and they seem to indicate that a drop is an "impact". I'm not gonna toss my newer Shoei RJ because it rolled off my seat to the ground. I inspected it for cracks and rolled on as it did nothing cosmetically except leave a tiny pit in the finish from a piece of gravel. I'm a cluts (spell?) at times and find it hard to believe that I have to can a helmet for a slight cosmetic imperfection. Realizing that life is potentially at stake here, I still have complete faith in the helmet's integrity. I must have dropped my HJC helmet a dozen times and believe it has faired fine as well. Between my helmets and my phones, I've pretty much got everyone's "drop quotas" filled (so rest easy)! On the other hand, if I found a crack or real flaw in the shell, I wouldn't hesitate to drop it in the trash. |

Posts: 1324 So Cal | The DOT helmets and the novelty ones are made of the same material. The diffrence is in the padding inside. Thicker padding, better protection. My so called "novelty" helmet has protected me in two accidents. Helmets are like seat belts. They give protection to a point. Studies have shown that under some conditions, a heavier helmet has caused greater neck injuries. Full face helmets trap CO in heavy traffic conditions, causing light headedness and blackouts. My personal opinion? Fate is the determining factor. When its your time, there's nothing you can do about it. Protective gear give some a false sense of security, with it, they take chances they normally wouldnt. It is the truely accidental accident that no one can prepare for. We take our chances and hope for the best.
If its a good deal, I say go for it and hope for the best. |

| Damage to the outer shell is not very important, but an impact hard enough to damage it may have also damaged the inner liner, which is the part that functions to absorb impact. This is very important, and you might not be able to actually see the damage.
Your best bet, if you care, is to throw it away and buy a new one. That said, plenty of people ride with helmets that offer little protection, even when new, or no helmet at all.
Here`s an article that explains how helmets work, and how they`re tested, if you`re interested.

Posts: 42 Orange County | The helmet was just dragged on the ground, by my friend who had it strapped to his bike and it fell to the ground while he was parking . I'm just looking for information that can tell me how or where to take it to get it fix. I know the more scratches the cooler it looks. But this is a large surface scratch and it looks stupid. I'll take a picture of it later.
