However it is safe to assume that in most areas they are somewhat illegal in one form or another. In most cases you can have them on while you are parked however you can't have them turned on while going down the road. And in some cases you can't have certain colors such as red or blue because the police are afraid that you will actually be able to use them to pull someone over....go figure. |

| Blue will definitely be a problem with the cops. Red and Yellow are traditional running and marker lights for vehicles and trailers. These fit into a grayer area. Yellow traditionally is for the front portion of the vehicle and red towards the rear of the vehicle. Just look at any Ultra Classic or GL1800's luggage and tour packs, they are full or running and marker lights. We have a retired LAPD officer in our riding club and he said the red running lights I added to my Vision should not be a problem here in California. He said blue is entirely out of the question.

Posts: 935 Rockford, IL | I kinda centered my previous answer a bit on the question of if they can be used around the engine. This changes the legality a question a bit, at least in Illinois it does....I think. From what I understand red lights can be added to the rear of a vehicle (or motorcyle) and orange lights can be added to the front. But nothing underneath or on the side of the vehicle. And no blue or green lights anywhere on any vehicle. Unless you are a security vehicle (green) or volunteer fireperson (blue).
However maybe I'm wrong and maybe your state allows different lights under different circumstances. I do know that I would hate to go thru the expense and the labor of installing blue lights and then afterwards find out they ARE illegal and have to be removed....that would suck. And in some cases an officer would demand that you remove them right there on the side of the road before they allow you to proceed on your journey...that would really suck. This is one of those things where you better do some checking with your local authorities prior to install. Don't go by what a bunch of us idiots here on this board say....you could be in some major mess if you go this route

Posts: 965 New York State | I can see adding LED's to the turn and brake lights visability is a life saver. But putting lights on the motor seems excessive. I always scratch my head when I see a car with lights under the sides. Just to much money and time on some peoples hands |

Jacksonville Florida | Put Wizard Lights on the engine. Then you can remotely control a varity of colors including red, blue and green. The Wizards allow you to control the light cycling function as well. |
