Posts: 15 Pittsburgh, PA United States | I was at my local dealer dropping my bike off for the 15k mi. service, and I asked him what GPS I should get for it? He said to find a Garmin Zumo 550, that a Zumo 550 will plug right in to it and that the directions will play right through the speakers with a Zumo 550. Is the information that he gave me accurate? I don't need anything really fancy. Just want to get the correct unit. Any help would be much appreciated. |

Posts: 251 Mechanicsville, VA United States | I've had what was made to work with the Vision and I now have a $799 gps made for motorcycles and I can tell ya buy a cheap $120 gps and be happy.
I think that's the way I'm going to go next on my bike. I've seen some pretty big screens and I can tell ya the screen on my $800 gps is so small it's a joke trying to use it, I think mine has 3"X4" screen and it sucks. I'll take some pictures to show you sometime this morning and post them here! |

| I have been using a older tom tom for years that I bought for $99. It has life time maps. Just stick it on the center console and feed the power cord into the glove box. There is no sound so you just have to glance at the screen. The only problem is if it starts to rain I either stick a baggie over it or Jam it into the trunk to prevent it from getting wet. I had a Garmin Zumo 660 and was very unhappy with it. Big bucks, hard to read the screen in the sunshine. I got rid of it. |

Posts: 6 Price, UT | I personally find it easier to use a ram ball mount and my iPhone for gps purposes. I hook it to power and have a plug to have it play through the speakers. I also expect to get interphone F5 inter comes which will Bluetooth the directions to my headset. |

Posts: 3773 Pittsburgh, PA | I have owned 3 motorcycle GPS system .. NEVER AGAIN ..talk about over priced.. I wasted so much money on those... now (not telling you to do this) i use a samsung s7 edge smartphone which is water resistant. Then I stream ALL audio to the radio via bluetooth.. so while I am. Riding I am streaming pandora, then also using Google maps... Google maps ALSO allows you to download offline maps to your device as well.. (in case of being in a area of no cell coverage). I don't have to worry about updated maps etc

Posts: 15 Pittsburgh, PA United States | I don't have a smart/I PHONE. I have a flip phone and am not interested in a phone that requires a data plan. I however did see used GPS units for sale on the web. Kinda curious about them........

Posts: 251 Mechanicsville, VA United States | I have so much stuff I don't even know what I have.....I have the Zumo on my bike and really dislike it for the money I spent and would not recommend it to no one. It very hard to make changes while riding, it's very hard to see if the sun is on your back....I bought this unit after reading some of the reviews on line about it, all I can say is those people must have been using maps before getting the Zumo and thought this thing is great! The best GPS I have ever owned is the I-Way 500 and the I-Way 600 from Lowrance who no longer have GPS's in their lineup of products. I have 4 units that I've used over the years since 2001, Lowrance stopped updating the GPS units after 2007 and this made their GPS's worthless after about 2010...it's very sad for the people that bought these units but life goes on so now it's time to find a GPS that easily used while riding a motorcycle.

Posts: 40 Cheyenne, WY United States | Not sure if it'll help but I use a Garmin Nuvi 350 NA GPS Receiver. Old but has an MP3 player and output for sound. Maps have to be loaded on an SD card but to get MP3 on one (if you want) is big bucks. Phones are swell but I'd hate to have one jump off the bike, they don't do so well when they hit the ground at 60mph. You can get one on E-bay for as little at $18. There may be better but none with the features (no Bluetooth though) for that kind of money.
Cheers

| I've had good luck using my SENA 10R and my phone (Samsung Galaxy S7) in place of a dedicated GPS and it is cheaper also. I think I paid $269 for the SENA and a remote control and $100 for the phone when my contract rolled over. The Bluetooth 4.1 is a huge leap forward over the 3.0. They no longer have wimpy speakers so you can actually hear it rolling down the road unlike the SMH10-R. The A2DP picks up all of the phone functions without having to usea 3.00 to 2.50 mm jack running from the phone to the unit. I keep my phone in the rear compartment or in the small compartment on the left side of the tank and use the remote to access functions on the phone. It gets a one thumb up rating from me. It would have received two thumbs up but the clamp on the remote unit gets in the way of the clutch lever when it is depressed fully and depending on the placement the unit gets in the way of engaging the turn signals. The brake lever doesn't depress all the way and the starter and cruise control functions aren't as critical as the controls on the left so it is more out of the way. |
