Ok, now that hubby and I have successfully fried one BlackBerry and one Garmin Nuvi by trying to make the plug work with this lovely Powerlet thing...(thank goodenss for extended warranties....) Has anyone had any success in splicing a charging wire to the powerlet plug? AND had your electronics live to tell about it.....

I purchased a dual port power outlet and cut the 6in cord down to 2in and then velcro the dual outlet next to the ipod plug and have no problems at all. I run a heated vest and a cell phone or navi.

First of all you have to make sure that the device you are trying to splice on to the powerlet is a 12 volt device. Most small electronic devices are not 12v devices. example my Magellan GPS is powered by 5v and the voltage is reduced from 12v to 5v in the cigarette lighter plug. If you just cut the cigarette lighter plug off and wire it to a powerlet 12v plug you will smoke the GPS.

The issues mentioned about 5v vs. 12v is HUGE. Be sure to use the "car power plug" and plug it into a powerlet product.

Arggh! Another one bites the dust. I want to say I feel your pain, but I don't. That is one warning I read about on the powerlet site, "do not splice...." I'm glad you had warranties on your items, but I know the frustration of using an adapter on an adapter to get things to work The choice for Victory to get to the european type plug may be a good decision in the long run, but in short term I know it has caused a lot of problems like yours, but they ain't tellin'.

GAT, not sure if you already feed something off "it" but there is a grey 12V lead right under the dash panel in front of your seat. As you mentioned you do need to make sure the unit runs on 12V. However, this is a god place to put a 12V feed instead of trying to splice into the powerlets. Hope this helps..... T

The easiest thing I have done was take out the power outlet Victory installed and put in a regular lighter that I can use for a power outlet. ET

Thanks for all of the info guys. What a pain to have to put a plug into a plug. Arggh! I was hoping to be able to use that nifty little plug in my glove box! Oh well....I guess I'll be ordering the 2 plug adapter from Powerlet to put in my trunk this week....

Has anyone switched the Powerlet plug for a standard 'cigarette lighter plug'? Do they just straight up switch or do you have to do any rewiring? And will the CLP fit in the existing hole?

You will have to drill out the hole to the lighter plug size. I also made an adapter to plug in the Victory plug to attach the lighter. Took about 30 minutes. I use it for the Sirius radio. My camera died or I would post a picture. ET

My dealer installs twin sockets on the center console in the area under the radio display. Allows for powering many types of units.
none have fried Visually, it looks OEM on the center console as well.
