Posts: 65 Newburgh,IN | Hey Gang:
I changed my oil @ 2000 miles. After draining the oil & removing the filter. I added 5 qts of oil as the oil capacity shows 5 qts. I rode it for several miles & when I checked it it was way over full. I had to drain quite a bit of oil out of it to bring it down to the correct level.
Anyone else have this happen?

Posts: 354 20 miles west of Chicago. | Don't just add 4 1/2 quarts. Add a bit over 4 quarts then check the level and adjust as necessary. Run the engine for half a minute or so to get oil circulating into the lines, cooler and filter. Shut it down and let it sit for 5-10 minutes to let the oil settle back down into the bottom of the engine case and check it again. Oil checks are done with the bike vertical, off the kickstand, and with the dipstick screwed all the way in. If you ran the bike for any distance with too much oil you may want to pull out the airbox drain hose from under the left front faring and pull the plug out of it over a recepticle; there may be oil in the airbox needing to be drained. Also may want to check under the black rubber boot just behind the primary case for oil in case increased oil pressure caused the oil pressure sensor to start leaking. |

Posts: 354 20 miles west of Chicago. | Just remembered another oil change tip. When draining the old oil, when it gets down to a drip, straddle the bike and hold it upright, even a few degrees to the right (Be careful not to lean too far, don't want to test the tipovers...) for about 30 seconds. You'll see that the dripping will again become a small stream. Do this 3 or 4 times and you'll get another 1/8 to 1/4 of quart of dirty oil to drain out. |
